As our fearless leader, Sonny “S-Dog” Perdue, gets “jiggy with it,” feel free to consider this a holiday weekend open thread.

Food stamp usage in Georgia is on the increase, according to statewide statistics, and with the demand for such social services rising, state officials want to make the application process easier.

“It really kind of serves as your one-stop shopping point, if you will, for social services,” Taka Wiley, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Human Resources, said of a new state Web site, Common Point of Access to Social Services.

The site, www.compass.ga.gov, launched earlier this month, allows residents to check on eligibility for social services and apply for food stamps.

Eventually, people will be able to apply for Medicaid, child care, WIC, energy assistance and other services on the site.

[SOURCE] Outstanding. For sure, we need to make getting free stuff from the government as easy as possible! If someone had to dare expend the slightest bit of energy, that would be absolutely horrid and unacceptable. This way is much easier and I’m quite releaved that these extremely poor people (who evidently also have access to the internet) won’t have to worry their heads that they might have to wait in a line in order for me to help pay their way through life.

Morris Brown nearing the end

by Rogue109 on December 26, 2008

Kinda sad that the end comes as a result of the fallout from an embezzlement scandal, but it appears that Morris Brown will soon be only a memory. There is a rally this Saturday to help pay the $380,000 water bill which is overdue, as well as to help raise $1.5 million to address day-to-day operations. Overall, the AJC is reporting, Morris Brown is about $30 million in debt.

If the water bill is now $380,000, it makes you wonder why they didn’t sound the alarm when it was only $50,000 or $100,000. By waiting to essentially the last minute, it’s a little too late to organize an effective response effort unless a wealthy benefactor steps in.

Really?

Bolton on Wednesday sent a 45-page report, plus appendices, to Ellis and county commissioners. The report objects to proposals to remove code enforcement and animal control from the police department and defends Bolton’s community policing program.

The report also calls the idea of hiring a public safety commissioner to oversee police, fire and other departments a “dinosaur concept” previously abandoned by DeKalb and many other governments nationwide.

The Gospel of Luke 2:1-20

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Judge Keith Rollins and court and city employees at the Douglasville municipal courthouse are being sent to “sensitivity training,” and signs “advising visitors of court decorum” will be posted around the building, after Rollins ordered Lisa Valentine, a Muslim, to serve a 10-day sentence for contempt of court after refusing on to comply with courthouse rules mandating the removal of “headgear” and cursing at court officials, according to the Associated Press.

“Kelley Jackson, a spokeswoman for Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker, said state law doesn’t permit or prohibit head scarfs,” said an AP report at the time of the incident. “‘It’s at the discretion of the judge and the sheriffs and is up to the security officers in the court house to enforce their decision,’ she said.”

AJC: Bush pardons Georgian

A Georgia man was among 19 recipients of presidential pardons from outgoing President Bush, U.S. Justice Department officials said Tuesday.

George Clarence Greene Jr., of Gray in South Georgia, was pardoned. Greene was sentenced in November 1985 to three years of probation and a $1,000 fine for mail fraud.

Greene, 77, could not be reached for comment Tuesday evening.

Now that the shame has been lifted, which one of you anonymous commenters or front pagers wants to come clean?

Magicians and Kiddie Porn

by Erick on December 24, 2008

It just does not surprise me to read a headline like this.

A Kennesaw youth minister and magician has been indicted on child pornography charges after federal agents found more than 5,000 images on his home computer.
Jeffrey Alan Wasley, known as “Magic Jeff,” was indicted Monday by a federal grand jury. A bond hearing is scheduled for Dec. 30.

The state of student journalism at Emory

by Rogue109 on December 24, 2008

Editorials Editor for The Emory Wheel is Asher Smith, a sophomore from Great Neck, N.Y. She He recently decided that she he would write about how President-Elect Barack Obama is similar in many ways to FDR. I know what you’re thinking: she’s he’s quite the original thinker as no one has touched on this topic yet. Here’s her his editorial in full where you can check out her his warped and slightly incoherent thinking.

In particular, there are two aspects of her his work which indicate her his clear lack of any education in economics and history and the disappointing reality that Atlanta’s Emory University fails to provide same to its students.

Falcons to Doraville?

by Buzz Brockway on December 24, 2008

An interesting idea explained in the AJC:

A developer is pitching the site of the closed GM plant in Doraville as a new home for the Atlanta Falcons, according to a report.

The Sembler Co., in a proposal to the Doraville City Council, suggests a retractable-roof stadium on 90 acres of the site, WSB radio reported Wednesday. The rest of the site would be used for restaurants, condos and hotels.

The WSB report said “paperwork obtained from the city” disclosed Sembler’s proposal for a stadium.

Falcons President Rich McKay told WSB the team has been contacted by Sembler, according to the report, but added that the team will wait until GM decides who will get the property before going any further.

GM recently said it has narrowed discussions about selling the site to one potential buyer, but it would not identify the company, and Sembler declined to comment.

The Falcons now play in the recently remodeled Georgia Dome and have a lease through 2020. But owner Arthur Blank has said he’d like a new stadium, possibly before then.

Doraville Mayor Ray Jenkins told WSB the auto plant site near the I-285/I-85 interchange would be a good spot for a stadium. “This location is so prime to everything,” Jenkins says. “No matter what goes in there. Mixed use. Stadium. Whatever.”
