It’s Augusta!

The news is out that the 2016 Georgia Republican Convention will be held in Augusta on June 3-4. Based on what I’m seeing on this Facebook page, the event will be at the two year old Augusta Convention Center.

Why the June date, instead of the second week of May, as it the usual custom? Probably because the new primary schedule will put the Peach State’s primary on May 17th, 24th, three days* after the convention would have gaveled to a close if it had been held on its normal weekend. There was no convention in 2014, when the primary was May 20th.

Excited about Augusta in June? Let us know in the comments.

* I’ve been alerted by the ever-astute Senator Josh McKoon that according to 2014’s HB 310, the primary is supposed to be the 24th week prior to the general election. Because Election Day 2016 will be on November 8th (The first Tuesday after the first Monday in November,) that makes Election Day take place during the second week of November, and moves the primary and runoff dates a week later than in 2014.

The good news is that because May 2016 has five Mondays, Memorial Day will still be the Monday after the primary. The runoff, if required, will be July 26th.

Jon, you are correct in your assumption. We did not want to be mid-primary week and try to be holding a Convention. Also – the further we get into the Presidential Primary, the more likely chance we could have the presumptive nominee (or gaggle of still-candidates as the case might be) address the Convention.

Hopeful we will see some concern on overhauling the tax code, balancing spending with revenue, fixing Obamacare, examining the loss of competition by industry consolidations or over regulation as in health care providers, communication companies, airlines, refocusing on infrastructure rebuilding and protection of individual rights.

The public mistrust will continue until leaders emerge that reflect freedom and equality over diverse advantages in business and society. Until then Political conventions are just a pack of dogs around the dinner table fighting over the scraps and satisfied if thrown an unearned meal.

Yeah…That FB page looks like its trying to convince GaGOP to host it in Augusta and not a confirmation. And I quote “Let’s bring the 2016 GAGOP State Convention to Augusta! Dates June 2nd – 4th 2016.” Looks like its more of a bid page than anything.

It really is Augusta. The State Committee approved it this past Saturday afternoon.

The hope is that we’ll be past the Georgia General Primary and hopefully have a presumptive GOP nominee by that weekend in June.
