Jonathan Shapiro of WABE has tweeted that Russell McMurry will take the reigns at the Georgia Department of Transportation as Commissioner Keith Golden prepares to retire at the end of the month. McMurry will take over immediately, with Golden remaining in an advisory role until January 31st.
GDOT board selects new chief… Russell McMurry, current director of planning. Taking over for Keith Golden Jan 31st #gapol

McMurry is current planning Director, recently elevated from the Department’s Chief Engineer position. This will ensure the top three positions at GDOT – Russell, Todd Long as Deputy Commissioner, and Chief Engineer Margaret Pirkle, are all engineers. This has been a welcome era for GDOT where engineers have been in the major decision making posts.
More on this story as it develops, including who will be appointed to replace McMurry as planning director.
