Tim Eidson is out as chief defender of the Cordele Judicial Circuit. He is replaced by Burt Baker, an attorney with the Office of the Capital Defender.
Anyone interested in serving as full-time chief defender for the circuit has until Monday to apply for the job.
Eidson and others including Gov. Nathan Deal, are being sued by the mothers of four previous defendants who were charged in the circuit.
According to The AJC:
The lawsuit, filed in January, said the circuit fails to provide meaningful representation for adult defendants and allows juvenile defendants to face their charges without any representation at all. The right to counsel is routinely reduced to a hollow formality in the South Georgia circuit, the suit said.
