RIP: Phil Foil

My friend Phil Foil passed away last night after a long fight with cancer. Phil served the state of Georgia as a Deputy Commissioner and later Chief Operating Officer in the Department of Community Affairs and also as the Executive Director of the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority. He is survived by his wife Paula and daughters Beth and Ashley.

I met Phil in the Fifth grade. We became fast friends and stayed close through elementary and high school. As happens in life our paths diverged but we still stayed in touch. Phil had a passion for politics even before I did and talked about wanting to get involved with the GOP. He served in various capacities in various campaigns most notably by managing Mike Beatty’s campaign for Lt. Governor in 2002. Mike lost but when Governor Perdue appointed him to head DCA, he brought Phil with him and Phil served the people of Georgia with honor.

Sometimes The Lord sends people into your life for a season, but I’m glad with Phil it was a long season. Watching Phil become a tremendous husband and father has been a blessing. Watching the courage with which he faced his trials has been a joy. He truly was a man of God who lifted up everyone around him and he touched many lives. My heart goes out to Paula, Ashley and Beth, but I know Phil is with The Lord and that we’ll see him again.

Below is a video produced by Hebron Church, where the Foil’s have been members for a number of years. The video was shot over a year ago when Phil first began his battle.
