Moral Mondays is planning to protest Governor Nathan Deal’s commencement address tomorrow morning at 10AM, at the Morehouse School of Medicine. The press release is below the fold.
I love a good protest. I don’t think they matter much to people outside of the group that’s marching, but I enjoy watching from a safe distance, with popcorn. I’ve even participated in a few when I was younger and less jaded. But what will I REALLY enjoy about this protest??
Getting to see one House man against the Morehouse administration. Dr. Warnock, Senior Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church and leader of the Moral Mondays movement graduated cum laude from Morehouse in 1991. Of the HBCUs in Georgia, we all know Morehouse is the most preeminent. These gentlemen are the elite, with their suits, ties (usually bow), and inevitably successful destinies. These prepsters’ ambition and drive is palatable when one steps on campus.
However, they are also politically diverse. It should be noted that last year’s commencement address was given by President Obama, and was largely seen as a controversial call to action for black men.
I am eager to see how the Governor will follow that up and how the man who leads our state will be able to answer the uncomfortable questions of the man who leads one of the most powerful black churches, among his own alumni. Because the fact is still: you can always tell a Morehouse man, you just can’t tell him much.
Governor Deal will have to answer questions like the expansion of Medicaid, which affect more minority communities rather than others. I’m curious as to whether those College of Medicine grads have a few questions of their own, particularly how their President and their Governor are at odds over an issue that will largely impact their communities and their practices. I look forward to watching the news tomorrow.
