When he was a reporter for the AP, Greg Bluestein was witness to 10 executions. This segment of CNN’s Reliable Sources is worth watching, regardless of your views on the death penalty.

Hypobaric chamber with nitrogen added at the end to keep the atmospheric pressure from getting too low to make a mess at the end. Anyone who has been through military pilot training can tell you it is painless and undetectable to the senses that you are not getting enough oxygen until just before you lose consciousness. You lose cognitive ability and feel some euphoria. No poisons needed.

During the war, Iran would drain the blood from prisoners. You would die from shock, painlessly.
