With DeKalb County sheriff Thomas Brown resigning to run against Hank Johnson in the fourth congressional district, there will be a special nonpartisan election held on May 20th to replace him for the remainder of his term, which runs through 2016.
At least one poll shows Melvin Mitchell in the lead followed by former DeKalb CEO and failed US Congress, US Senate and Georgia House candidate Vernon Jones. Eight candidates have qualified for the seat, meaning a runoff election is likely.
In order to draw attention to the down-ballot race and to let voters know a bit more about the candidates, the DeKalb County GOP is holding a meet the candidates forum on Tuesday, April 29th. The event is from 7-9 PM at Marist School, 3790 Ashford-Dunwoody Road in Atlanta.
Candidates confirmed to attend include the two presumptive polling leaders Mitchell and Jones, along with Ted Golden, Tony Hughes, Melody Maddox, Jeff Mann and LaSalle Smith. By my count, that leaves candidate Dale Collins as the only one not confirmed to attend.
The forum will be moderated by Mike Moore, a news anchor at CBS Radio V-103 and WAOK.
Admission to the forum is free and open to the public.
