Martin Enters Mayoral race with Interesting Support

Colin Martin had his official announcement today as candidate for Mayor of Columbus.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer has a full story here, but I’m more interested in the photo of what looks to be the front row of the event.

The photo, taken by Mike Haskey at the Ledger-Enquirer, shows Vivian Creighton Bishop sitting what appears to be front and center. If that name doesn’t sound familiar to you, she is Rep. Sanford Bishop’s wife. It looks like the former Columbus Chamber VP has assembled a coalition that transcends the divisions seen in  the last two mayor’s contests.

Tomlinson has been criticized from both Republicans and Democrats for being authoritarian rather than seeking input from members of council or the city at large when making decisions.  It looks like Martin is starting out with the coalition building, which should put him on track for a potential upset of an incumbent.

Represented here are 3 of 10 City Councilors. Also impressive is the presence of the County Marshall and County Sheriff (remember, Columbus is Consolidated) – that’s two-thirds of the Public Safety triumvirate in our County, the third is hired/fired by the Mayor (Chief of Police). Public Safety is a high concern in Columbus lately, their attendance is significant.

In addition to the Councilors, LEO’s, and Mrs. Bishop (who is our Municipal Court Clerk) the County Tax Commissioner – Lula Lunsford Huff is in attendance (both names – her maiden and married represent important families in our community).
