The top public safety official in a suburban Atlanta county has abruptly resigned, saying the police force he led is in crisis.

AllNews 106.7 is quoting a Marietta Daily Journal report that Jack Forsythe turned in his resignation letter Monday, saying he was blocked from making needed reforms. He had been selected as the county’s public safety director just one year ago.

Forsythe said there’s been a lack of funding and resources needed to provide adequate protection for residents of the county just northwest of Atlanta.

County Chairman Tim Lee said Cobb County Fire Chief Sam Heaton has been appointed interim public safety director.

Lee said he plans to ask the Board of Commissioners to appoint Heaton to the position permanently at its Jan. 14 meeting.

Cobb needs to eliminate the “public safety director” position and just go with a police chief and fire chief.
