Vincent Fort duped by Trayvon’s “Cousin”

H/T to the Daily Jolt who linked the WABE article.

Last month Vincent Fort hosted a rally against Georgia’s Stand your Ground law. This in and of itself is not news or surprising. However what is surprising is one of the speakers at that event.

Patrick Fulton claimed to be Trayvon Martin’s cousin, however the Martin family claims that he is 1) not a cousin and 2) not a relation. They even go one step further and claim they don’t even know him.

You would think in the era of the internet and gotcha politics (see examples around ACORN and Planned Parenthood) that Fort or someone would have done a quick Google search or gone the extra step to contact the Martin Family to vet this speaker.

Some might say that the effort to contact the family would be difficult because of all the media around the case and that the family has done a good job of trying to insulate themselves. Well some of the family and the family lawyer were at the event, so there was some line of communication that could have been used.

If there is going to be any dialogue about Stand your Ground and other firearm related issues, it would probably be a good idea to avoid moments like this.

      In the earlier article on WABE they had reported him as his uncle and had to correct it.

      {Martin’s uncle cousin, Patrick Fulton, spoke at Tuesday’s event and called on attendees to support Fort.} the strike through isn’t showing on here for some reason.

      {** An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified Patrick Fulton as Trayvon Martin’s uncle. }

    I haven’t smoked yet today, so I’d best refrain from offering my immediate reaction, and instead follow your example of granting Fort the benefit of the doubt. More care could have been taken when organizing the event, independent of motive.

    Sorry, I don’t buy that Sen. Fort didn’t know the truth. He probably justified it in his head like Dan Rather and CBS … its fake but accurate.
