Morning Reads–Still Great

Yeah, so there’s apparently a meeting of some influential people this weekend. That would be WRAS-Fest this Saturday, 6pm-12pm at the GSU Student Center. Tix are a sawbuck and support one of the best college radio stations in the country, and one of the many things that makes Atlanta great.

Congrats to all the grads of Georgia State, Emory, and whichever of the institutes of higher learning in GA that conducted commencement exercises the past few days.

I’d link to more but the above are basically perfect.

Aereo means you can finally cut out cable tv. Aereo provides you with the local networks and Bloomberg in HD. So, you can subscribe to Netflix, Aereo, maybe a smart tv app (LG, Samsung, Sony, Philips etc.), and for a fraction of the cost you’re done.

Here’s the thing that bugs me about that article, it’s not reporting some of the bigger items he earmarked over the years, including alot of military base items between 2001-2006. Savannah Morning News did an article in 2007 or 2008 about how his earmarks were related to the interests of his bigger $$$ supporters. The thing is that until the tea party started coming into play he was one of the top 10% includers of earmarks. Then suddenly out of the blue in 2009/2010 he became this reformer of spending. The problem is, you travel up and down the I-95 corridor and you are going to find taxpayer funded buildings with his name on in big stone carved letters, or bronze plaques. Kingsland got an earmark for a sewer because they have a navy base near by to justify it. Liberty County has money for a very expensive water treatment plant 10 miles east of Fort Stewart they are not going to need for at least 10 years at current growth. Glynn Co got a new Federal Marshall school, and an earmark to upgraded the county airfield – although private planes of weekend golfers use it more often. Don’t look at just the moeny but why it was earmarked…

Actually, now that the airport in Brunswick has been upgraded, you can actually fly Delta from Brunswick to Atlanta and vice versa for less than $100 each way. The same flight costs almost $500 from Savannah… Go figure…

I was referencing McKinnon, not Golden Isles. Although Golden Isles has gotten it’s fair share of earmarks too.

Why is GSU holding a fundraiser for Georgia Tech’s WREK?

LDIG has been doing so well with abiding by the rules. Dont get him all riled up with transporation topics! 😀

Thanks Ed. Now I don’t have to google ramps myself. It’s been a really busy two weeks.

I made the Ramp butter myself last spring (minus the quail eggs). I have her book, nicely done, and some interesting combos.

Ed, let me explain Aereo to you. Aereo is like a dvr service for standard “over the air” TV channels. You can record these channels for play back within 24 hours (used to be that might have changed to longer period). When you sign up for the service, they assign you your own antenna at their data center. They take that signal and act as a head end dvr. This is kind of a technologically backward way of doing it, but it follows to the letter the law established by the Supreme Courts Cablevision decision which allowed them to store your content on their servers (eliminating the need for a DVR at home). The service is $12.00 and, if you wanted to eliminate Cable TV because of its ever increasing price…or if you dont watch much tv and it bugs you to have to buy an entire package with converter box because the cable companies are now scrambling it on the cable, this might be a service you’d be looking at (or if you have netflix, amazon prime, and aereo…you dont need cable tv at all).
Of course, that said, you could always install your own antenna or rabbit ears and get them for free without the option to watch later or skip commercials.
The networks are having tantrums about this because it is going to change the pricing model. Networks make content providers pay carriage fees to send their signal the last mile to your home. Thats why you hear about different networks and cable cos having these show downs and blackouts of major sporting events when they cant come to agreement. Aereo (and I must say brilliantly) has found an innovative strategy around this. Aereo isn’t “stealing” content (as courts have said up to this point)…what they are selling is a service to make watching free over the air content more convenient. Hope that helps, Ed
