This came across the wires not too long ago from the Catoosa County News.  Apparently Fort Oglethorpe City Manager Ron Goulart turned in his resignation notice today.  A special meeting of the city council was called today (Friday) at 3p to accept the resignation and appoint an interim city manager (there were actually two separate closed meetings since they were dealing with personnel matters).  The person that they chose, Harold Silcox, fired both police chief David Eubanks and public works director Jeff Long:

The reason city employees fired Jeff Long was because he, as a county commissioner, agreed to annex a piece of property into the county from the city in anticipation of the legislature approving such a measure. Eubanks was not given a reason. “I’m not happy about it and my wife isn’t going to be happy about it,” Eubanks said.

We’ll see what transpires over the next few days.

Wow, if they can nail a commissioner or mayor for promising a zoning change if they annex, the courts will be buried. Jurisdiction shopping is a state sport.

That quote doesn’t even make sense. Annexed “into the county from the city?”

Technically the reporter meant de-annex while it would be more interesting to know the benefit/gain.

I’m trying to figure out the wrong-doing here as I’m not exactly sure what was done?

I guess the moral of the story is, don’t piss off the Fort Oglethorpe city council . . . or they’ll swear in a guy to help vote for a guy who will fire your a**.

According to the Times Free Press, the council violated several of its own rules in this action:

It smells funny, for sure..

Ah, Details. Always a nice addition to a story like this.

Frankly, I’m impressed they managed to spell coup d’etat correctly.

But what does Brian Slowinksi have to say about this backwoods brouhaha?
