Isakson Wants Answers About Benghazi

From a press release:

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and Bob Corker, R-Tenn., both members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton demanding more details regarding the increasing threats and security concerns that preceded the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that resulted in the death of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens.

The senators’ letter comes in the wake of conflicting reports from the Administration about the events leading up to the attacks, as well as recent news reports that Ambassador Stevens kept a diary chronicling his concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Benghazi prior to the Sept. 11, 2012 attacks.

Specifically, Isakson and Corker request in the letter that the State Department promptly provide the Senate Foreign Relations Committee with all communication relevant to the security situation in Benghazi between the U.S. Mission to Libya and the State Department leading up to the attacks, including any cables sent from Ambassador Stevens.

The full text of the letter from Isakson and Corker is below.

The Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton

Secretary of State

U.S. Department of State

2201 C Street, NW

Washington, DC 20510

Dear Secretary Clinton:

We write today to request additional information regarding the attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11, 2012, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens.  While we appreciate your participation in the briefing to the U.S. Senate last week, we are extremely concerned about conflicting reports over the events leading up to the attacks.  Specifically, we are concerned over the apparent lack of security preparations made despite a demonstrable increase in risks to U.S. officials and facilities in Benghazi in the period leading up to the attacks.

As you know, multiple attacks against Western diplomats and aid workers this year raised serious concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Benghazi.  On June 6, 2012, an IED attack damaged the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, prompting State Department officials to request a temporary increase in security cooperation with Libyan forces.  On June 11, 2012, an RPG attack against the British ambassador’s convoy led to the closure of the British consulate in Benghazi, and on August 5, 2012, the office of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Benghazi was also attacked by militants with RPGs.

Libyan officials claim that that they met with U.S. officials regarding rising threats against Western officials in the days leading up to the attacks, and CNN reports that Ambassador Stevens was increasingly concerned over the deteriorating security situation in Benghazi and rising levels of Islamist extremism.  Despite these warnings, the State Department sought and received a waiver from the standard security requirements for the consulate.

As required by U.S. law, the State Department has established an Accountability Review Board (ARB) to investigate the attacks and the security posture of the consulate at the time of the attacks. The ARB’s report is due later this year, and we look forward to reviewing its findings.  While we appreciate the sensitivities associated with this ongoing investigation, we must insist on more timely information regarding the attacks and the events leading up to the attacks.  To that end, we request that you transmit to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee all communications between the U.S. Mission to Libya and the State Department relevant to the security situation in Benghazi in the period leading up to the attacks, including, but not limited to, cables sent from Ambassador Stevens.

We thank you for your timely and personal attention to this request.

Sincerely,

Johnny Isakson                                                                 Bob Corker

United States Senator                                                   United States Senator

There are a lot of stories being circulated not only on security but circumstances around the killings by the terrorists. A full report is in order.

Do you think the people leaking this info should be tortured like Bradly Manning is, for the same ‘basic’ crime of leaking ‘classified’ information?

      • saltycracker says:

I have no idea if the info is from “leaks” or fabricated BS. If it is from leaks the leakor would be the least of our concerns.

If what you think Manning is going through is torture, then yes. I’m sure the Supreme Court would not find it to be torture under the law, so i have no legal qualms about it. BTW, Manning should go to trial asap. And he should go to trial for treason.

Ex. CIA officer Michael Scheuer’s comments with Lou Dobbs on what’s transpiring in the Middle East:

Scheuer also discusses a much broader policy issue in regard to foreign involvement in the Middle East. Isakson probably wants specifics on the attacks, but I don’t know what good it would do unless you trace the problem all the way back to its roots. That’s been the way we play the game throughout (R) and (D) administrations and nothing changes. Our government picks their leaders, they retaliate, we retaliate, they retaliate, so on and so forth.

    sympathetic to brotherhoods interests.

I’m no Obama fan, but this is a little bit of a stretch and awfully “tin foil hat.” The only area we actively assisted with a revolution, Libya, has rejected the Brotherhood-connected party in elections. We give money to whoever is in charge in Egypt because we are basically paying for their peace with Israel. The Brotherhood has been working underground for decades in Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, and Syria, so it is very understandable that given an organic revolt by a disgruntled population, they would be ready to spring out and take the lead, they were the only ones already organized and they could use the existing religious order to further their aims. The Brotherhood has existed since 1928 and has been the most consistent opposition group to many of the strongmen in the Middle East, there is nothing shocking about their rise to power, and there is no proof of a back door plot by Obama to put the Brotherhood in power.

What’s not to believe about Obama orchestrating the Brotherhood rising to power across the mideast since he’s a Kenyan Muslim? It’s the logical next step we leared that Muslims have infiltrated of all levels of the US government as revealed by a higher power to Framklin Graham and Michele Bachman.

        • saltycracker says:

When you do things like telling NASA their mission is to build relations with Muslims or are obvious in shunning Israel’s leaders or dither before and after our embassy’s are sacked, you can expect some WTF’s. It’ll get fun if he is reelected, he won’t have to accomodate any of his military or intelligence advisors.

On the lighter side of Obama’s pandering to rogue elements in Islam, the political cartoons in European newspapers are pretty humorous.

you don’t buy peace from those that hate you. all you buy is time for them to develop strength and power to hurt you using your resources.
