And the best conservative columnist in Atlanta is…

Good job to our big bossman, Charlie for being named Atlanta’s best conservative columnist by Creative Loafing.

A healthy media diet should consist of hearty servings of views with which you disagree. And sometimes you’ll be surprised to find yourself saying the person has a point. That’s the way we feel about Charlie Harper of Peach Pundit and Dublin’s Courier-Herald fame. The Fayette County native and current Cobb County resident first caught political observers’ eyes as Icarus, the nom de plume he used on Peach Pundit, the mostly conservative blog covering Georgia politics. The witty gent proved himself to be a wordsmith who didn’t fall into the same traps filled with both conservative and liberal pundits who simply parroted talking points and shouted ideology. He soon dropped the anonymity, took over the reins of Peach Pundit, and picked up a daily political column in Dublin’sCourier-Herald, which also runs on the blog. Since then he’s called for ethics reform, decried plans to publicly finance a new Atlanta Falcons stadium, and – in a refreshing change for a conservative columnist – urged increased MARTA funding from state lawmakers. We don’t always agree. In fact, we rarely do. But Harper’s voice adds some intellect and common-sense conservatism to the debate. Both are sorely needed.

Icarus (AKA: Charliekins) is also at turns, a RINO, a liberal, and a known Democratic operative–why not be a conservative while he’s at it, too?

N.B.: This announcement, of course is not news. And now you have more reason than ever to buy him a beer.

  1. Congrats Charlie. I guess.

Of course this does serious damage to my campaign to get a Golden Sleaze award. Olbermann is gone so I can’t be named the “Worst Person In The World” and now Charlie goes and make Creative Loafing like us.

  2. SallyForth says:

Yeah, but…. Charlie got beat out as “Best Local Blogger” by a fashionista and lots of flowery stuff, so maybe C/L doesn’t really like us that much.

In Georgia, it actually is. Look at what passes for conservative thought and conservative leadership in this state. Until people that are to the right of Charlie actually do better in terms of ideas and leadership – as opposed to reflexively opposing Atlanta and parroting the national conservative commentators – then go ahead and praise the RINO moderate Charlie for exhibiting the capacity for abstract thought (to borrow a line from “O Brother Where Art Thou”).

  3. Calypso says:

Way to go, Charlie. I’m glad for you. Is there a large monetary award to go with your new found recognition and fame, like the $1M they give for the Nobel Prize?

  4. Bob Loblaw says:

Until you’re the 69th most influential conservative in America and talk about it in your posts, then you’re still just a blogger.
