50 years ago today, Clarence Anglin, John Anglin and Frank Morris escaped from Alcatraz Prison.

They were one of only two groups of inmates who escaped and were neither caught nor killed.

A report in Sunday’s New York Times has a write up of the events and recent work on the escape that suggests they may have in fact successfully survived their escape.

So what do you think happened to them? I’m willing to believe they survived and the floating raft was their way of taunting authorities, which would make sense giving how clever they were managing to escape.

What does this have to do with Georgia, you might ask.  Well, the Anglin brothers are from Donalsonville and the trio (as well as a fourth who reportedly backed out at the last minute) did time at the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary.

The Mythbusters proved their raft was seaworthy and they could reach the other side of the bay.
