In case you haven’t heard, Music Midtown is back:
The beloved Atlanta music festival, which ended in 2005 after a mostly successful and frequently buzzed-about 11-year run, will return Saturday, Sept. 24, at Piedmont Park.
Two stages will bookend the park during the noon to 11 p.m. event, featuring headliners Coldplay and The Black Keys and a slew of burgeoning alternative bands such as Cage the Elephant, Band of Skulls, The Joy Formidable and Atlanta-based Manchester Orchestra.
Tickets go on sale July 16 and will cost $55 for the all-day fest, which will also include an artists market, food vendors and two VIP areas.
You can find more information here, including mention of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed’s role in bringing back Music Midtown.
I know my wife is pretty excited about this, but I think out of that shortlist of music provided the only band I’d want to see is Manchester Orchestra.

Meh
Very excited about this.
Coldplay, The Black Keys, and Manchester Orchestra? I’m definitely in.
Coldplay is basically the same thing as Nickelback. And Nickelback is a horrible organization (I don’t use the word band because that might make them think they have some creedence).
I am, however, stoked for Cage the Elephant and Young the Giant. I hope some more bands get added. Here’s to hoping that Cheap Trick is among them.
Ha, come on Jason, Coldplay’s gotta be right up your alley. There was a listener poll on the Dan Patrick show a couple weeks back about whether it was okay for a man to admit he liked Coldplay. I’m conflicted, but if I’ve got to answer, I’m gonna say no.
@Toxic: If Cheap Trick is added, then definitely count me in, but I dont think thats gonna happen.
No, not all.
Oh joy.
Just what we need in Midtown. Another event probably closing down 10th Street. I’m on a board that works hard with the event applicants to minimize the negative impact of week after week of events at Piedmont Park. Generally, we get ignored, especially if it is a ‘city event’. They just do what they damn well please. As long as “someone is not killed within 1500 feet” of an event (this is from city hall, verbatim, from my understanding) then the event is considered to not be a nuisance.
Tell that to Midtown grocery. Even with an off duty APD officer as hired security, they have been robbed and punched in the face during events. Perps come in 10 at a time and it happens every time there is an event in Piedmont Park. So now they close. Being a small business, there is little else they can do besides close the doors.
Me? I personally feel that the city of Atlanta is not diversifying local events into other parts of town. Most Class A-D size events are held in ‘uptown’ areas in Piedmont Park, while good neighborhoods south of I-20 and Centennial Olympic Park languish for lack of the thrills of having tens of thousands of people who don’t give a flip about your neighborhood invade, er visit and leave lots of sometimes not nice things behind.
Share the Love, Mayor Reed! Send some festivals to West and South Atlanta. This isn’t a racial thing, keeping all this good stuff in mostly white Midtown, is it sir?
I didn’t think so…
