Georgia’s fallen heroes

(Over the last few months I have been remiss in noting the ultimate sacrifice of some of Georgia’s finest men and women in the Global War Against Terror. Below are the names of our fellow Georgians who we owe more than can be expressed.)

Army Sgt. Johnny W. Lumpkin, 38, of Columbus, died July 2 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds sustained July 1 in a non-combat-related equipment incident in Taji, Iraq. He was assigned to 1st Bn, 41st Field Arty Regt, 1st BCT, 3rd Inf Div, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Army Pfc. Jacob A. Dennis, 22, of Powder Springs, died July 3 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, of injuries sustained June 30 in a weapons system accident at Forward Operating Base Lane, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 4th Bn, 23rd Inf Regt, 5th Stryker Bde, 2nd Inf Div, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

Army Staff Sgt. Sheldon L. Tate, 27, of Hinesville, died July 13 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attached his unit with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire. He was assigned to 782nd Bde Spt Bn, 4th BCT, 82nd Abn Div, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Edgar N. Roberts, 39, of Hinesville, died August 17 at Nataional Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, of wounds sustained June 26 at Sayed Abad, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to 810th Eng Co (SAPPER), Georgia National Guard, Swainsboro, Georgia.

Army Pfc. Chad D. Coleman, 20, of Moreland, died August 27 in Paktya province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attached his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to 1st Sq, 33rd Cav Regt, 3rd BCT, 101st Abn Div (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Marine Lance Cpl. Christopher B. Rodgers, 20, of Griffin, died September 1 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Bn, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Div, II MEF, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Marine 1st Lt. Scott J. Fleming, 24, of Marietta, died September 17 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Bn, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Divi, III MEF, Kaneohe Bay. Hawaii.

Air Force Senior Airman Michael J. Buras, 23, of Fitzgerald, died September 21 of wounds suffered as the result of an improvised explosive device detonation in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 99th Civil Engineer Squadron, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.

Navy Senior Chief Cryptologic Technician (Collection) David B. McLendon, 30, of Thomasville, died September 21 in a UH-60 Black Hawk crash during combat operations in Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to an East Coast-based naval special warfare unit.
