The BIG IDEA Roy Barnes has been waiting for…

…has finally arrived. Brace yourself, people.

Congratulations to Kelly Nelson of Lawrenceville – winner of 2 tickets to Saturday’s UGA vs. Arkansas game. Kelly shared her idea to Make Georgia Work and was entered for a chance to score tickets to the game.

As a small business owner, Kelly’s idea was to align our state tax structure with our “buy local” campaign, to further encourage Georgians to support Georgia businesses.

Gripping….kinda. But ‘ol Roy just can’t seem to bring himself around to saying “cut taxes.” No sir, it’s got to be that we have to “align our state tax structure.” Here’s an idea: let’s just cut taxes across the board and cut spending and let people decide where they want to spend their money! Then we don’t have to worry about such myopic economic concepts like “buy Georgia” and can instead just permit free(r) markets to handle the rest.

I wonder, though, if this means it’ll be cheaper to buy booze from a liquor store on Sunday in Georgia if Barnes wins since we’d be supporting a “local business”…hmmm.

[UPDATE] Otis Campbell e-mails in to note that he is going to support Barnes if it means cheaper booze.

Considering it was a contest with people sending in ideas, how do you know that Nelson is not the one who submitted an idea saying “align our state tax structure”?

  2. ChuckEaton says:

I’m at a disadvantage, since the details of the “UGA tickets winning” plan were left curiously ambiguous, but if it involves giving sales tax breaks to buy Georgia products (or tax premiums on out-of-state products), that would be a violation of the Commerce Clause.

  3. RuralDem says:

Is it really that difficult to pick up the phone, call the campaign, and ask them to explain the plan or even email them or are you just wanting to throw out the possibility about violating the Commerce Clause?

Seems to me that since Barnes has an even shot at winning the Governorship, then you’d certainly want to share your concern in case he did win and proposed such an idea.

That is, if you’re truly concerned and not simply throwing out a partisan shot.

  4. CobbGOPer says:

Hell, if Barnes came out and said he was going to work to cut taxes, I might actually vote in the Governor’s race, for him. As it stands, I’m leaving that box blank.

    • CobbGOPer says:

Although I’m starting to seriously consider voting against Casey Cagle as well… Rest of the GOP ticket, I got no problems with, and I’ll be voting for them down the line…

Don’t get me started on all the ways Bobby Petrino is worse (WORSE) than Steve Spurrier. And I hate Steve Spurrier with the fire of a thousand suns.
