Fort Gordon wins in an iPhone app competition.
While visiting Fort Monroe, Va., in January, Maj. Gregory Motes checked his iPhone for the post’s closest barber before rushing to meet with a general.
First he needed a haircut — and fast.
His Google search showed that businesses on post didn’t register with the iPhone’s network, but the disappointment gave Motes an idea.
“I could make an app for that,” he thought.
Back at Fort Gordon, Motes developed an iPhone application that uses Google Maps to chart popular locations on post. It was one of four winning applications Motes submitted to the Apps for the Army competition in May, an Army-specific software-development challenge.
