Known as the “Consistent Conservative of the Senate,” Senator Preston Smith is a proven leader with the uncommon courage to fight for us as Georgia’s attorney general. Having served in the state Senate since 2003, he has a strong record of being an independent leader, not a partisan politician.
Elected in his twenties from Rome, he has always been a champion for limited government, free enterprise, individual liberty, personal responsibility, and a strong defense. That is why he has never voted for a tax increase, always defended the Second Amendment, sponsored the toughest illegal immigration bill in the country, stood firmly for the right to life, led the successfulcharge to pass tort reform, and been a conservative with the backbone to call things like he sees them.
Now running to be Georgia’s next attorney general, Senator Smith will be an attorney general who will not need on the job training.
As the former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee over judicial agencies, Senator Smith knows the law and how it should be used to protect and defend the people of Georgia. As attorney general, he will stand with law enforcement to keep our communities safe and be an attorney general who has the backbone to prosecute public corruption and restore people’s faith in their government.
As a member of the Reapportionment and Redistricting Committee, Senator Smith has experience working to making sure that the 2011 redistricting will be fair and constitutional. As attorney general, he will continue that fight so that the people of Georgia are not used as political pawns to keep the politics-as-usual mentality of our partisan politicians.
As a member of Health and Human Services, Senator Smith has been a leader in fighting to protect Georgians from the unconstitutional mandates and restraints of ObamaCare. As attorney general, he will continue to lead the fight against Washington and join other attorneys general from across the nation who are taking the people’s case to the court against this ‘big-government intrusion.’
As a member of Appropriations, Senator Smith has worked to streamline government and help the people of Georgia by cutting taxes and regulations. As attorney general, he will continue to be a tax-payer champion and will work to put an end to government waste, fraud, and abuse.
As a member of Retirement, Senator Smith has worked to protect the retirement benefits of our seniors, educators, and public safety employees. As attorney general, he will continue to make sure that those who have given so much to the education and safety of our citizens are protected and defended.
As a citizen legislator, Senator Smith works in the private sector outside his official duties in the state Senate. He is a practicing attorney and Senior Vice President of ApolloMD. He previously work as a partner with the Rome law firm of Cox Byington, PC, and served as an adjunct instructor at Georgia Highlands College.
Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist said “I could not be happier to see such a stalwart defender of the taxpayers running for Georgia Attorney General. Time and again, Preston Smith has shown his commitment to his constituents by standing up to the political establishment and refusing to vote for a tax increase.”
“Preston Smith has been and will be an outstanding advocate for our pro-life issues,” Georgia Right to Life President Daniel Becker said following the announcement of the organization’s endorsement. “As our Attorney General, I am confident Preston Smith will enforce our laws that protect the innocent lives that are lost each year to abortion. We always have supported Preston Smith because he is a rock-solid conservative who has been a life-long, ardent defender of innocent life.”
In 2005, Georgia Trend magazine recognized Senator Smith as one of the 40 most prominent leaders in Georgia under the age of 40. He also was named among Georgia’s 21 rising star lawyers by The Fulton County Daily Report. The Atlanta Business Chronicle recognized Senator Smith on its “Who’s Who” list of Georgia leaders in the fields of law and business, and he was named to the list of the ‘100 Most Influential Georgians’ by Georgia Trend magazine.
Born and raised in Cobb County, Senator Smith is a graduate of Baylor University and the University of Georgia School of Law. He is a seventh generation Georgian who resides in Rome.
