You don’t need to worry about privacy…..

Next time someone says you don’t need to worry about the government collecting personal data, point them to the residents of Cobb County, who may or may not have had all their voter information stolen by RootqinG and Kral Bela.

Good Job Cobb Elections Board.

H/T to Cobb’s former front page poster

I think a lot of Americans are all but clueless as far as the whole “privacy” thing is supposed to go with voting. Back before all the technology, the voting booths had curtains and people punched paper ballots which couldn’t really be traced back to the voter. Now it seems the only real privacy advocates with voting are the supposed “fringe” or tea partier types. The “disgrundled” types, volunteers, “average Joes”, Libertarians, ect…

IIRC, the voter registration application asks for your SSN.

SSN + Birthdate + Home address == Identity thief’s wet dream.

Someone hacking a Website does not mean they have access to everything else in the entity’s operations. A website can be sitting on a server in East Bumblefuke, Kentucky while the operations department is in Alaska and there is nothing but an FTP connection that allows someone to update the website.

Thank you for the heads-up on this.

I contacted Cobb Elections on Wednesday morning and advised them of the problem. The website was taken offline shortly thereafter.

I also advised Bob Ott (the county commissioner for my district) of the issue and my actions to resolve it.

He later contacted me and stated that the problem was now fixed. He said that the issue had been on the public side – which does not have any voter data on it.

    Thank you again 🙂
