Loren Collins sends along a video of a local birther (who has tried to indict President Barack Obama in a common law grand jury) that approached Rep. Nathan Deal, a candidate for governor, at the Georgia Christian Alliance held the Faith, Family and Freedom Kickoff and asked him about the president’s citizenship.
Deal says that the doesn’t “shy away from hard questions” like Obama’s birth certificate. What conspiracy theorist doesn’t think they are asking “hard questions”? Jim Garrison was asking hard questions when he unsuccessfully tried Clay Shaw for the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The 9/11 Truthers believe they are asking “hard questions.” The one common theme is they all rely on conjecture and half-truths and no amount of evidence is enough for them.
He adds that the president can clear this up by telling him where he can direct his constituents, who Deal blames for his crusade, where they can go “to see authentic documentation, that he says is authentic, to satisfy their curiosity.”
Obama’s birth certificate has been online since June 2008. It has been independently examined and determined to be legitimate. Since there is a legitimate copy online, why hasn’t Deal directed his “constituents” (and I doubt he is referring to the citizens of Georgia’s Ninth Congressional District at this point) there to view it for themselves. Is Nathan Deal calling this copy a fake?

It does sound as though he still questions the authenticity of the document. It also appears, in the way he stumbles every time he uses the word “constituents,” that’s he’s really stretching on that one. I did agree with him about one thing though and that was his referenced to “politically incorrect” paralyzing our country. It is to a degree.
Here’s another candidate that should just go away. Friends of ours who live out of Georgia kid us about the “crazy” Congressman who is pursuing this birther thing and running from cameras. He has the potential to make Georgia a laughingstock.

The Birther movement is a manifestation of a cultural opposition to Barack Obama being the president of “their” country. To them, “its just not right” for this man to be who he is, and yet be Head of State and Head of Government. So don’t waste your time trying to produce evidence to satisfy the birth certificate demands of the Harrys of the world. NO AMOUNT OF EVIDENCE WILL EVER SUFFICE. Sane Republicans just wish that they would find a home outside of the Republican Party.

Several of Obama’s relatives in Kenya have been muzzled by the Kenya government. If they decide to talk, or vital records employees in Hawaii decide to talk, then things could get interesting. With all due respect Buzz, this was a question asked by an individual. So, is a political figure who is a “representative” of the congressional district supposed to simply ignore certain segments of his base? Unless someone is living under a rock, this kind of fervor is all over the place. That certainly doesn’t make it correct.
This certainly is not an issue that would “define” Deal in the public eye. At least I don’t think it would. It’s not something you see plastered all over his campaign materials. That would then, at least in my opinion, create cause for concern.
Congressman Deal isn’t my favored candidate in this race, but I think it’s stupid that some are attempting to define who he is by 3rd party groups who would love to define who he is in the public’s eye.

But if the segment of his base are nuts, yes he should ignore them. This is akin to Cynthia McKinney calling for an investigation of Bush’s involvement in 9/11. I’m sure there are some nuts in the 9th who want Bush tried for war crimes, and thankfully Deal has ignored them.

While I don’t think the birther issue defines him, I do think that it does provide fodder for the other candidates to use against him and the press to continue to pursue until he drops the whole thing. I also think that him making the “15 Most Corrupt Members of Congress” isn’t a plus. This also provides fodder as well. Also, some of the underhanded tactics that some of his supporters or staffers are trying to pull on one candidate in particular is going to come back and haunt him. He should remember that “people who live in glass houses, shouldn’t throw stones.” People seem to forget that even though you may have an anonymous screen name, there is a little thing known as an ISP address that can give you away. He’s being defined in ways other than the birther. Time will reveal all, too.

As far as the birther stuff, there’s a bunch of folks asking those questions that aren’t idiots (maybe in your mind they’re idiots). If there is a huge number of your core base asking that, it would be insane to ignore them, especially this year.
If they’re not idiots, you simply refer them to the document that was posted online over a year and a half ago. The one issued by the state of Hawaii that clearly states “Location of Birth: Honolulu.” Or perhaps to the official Hawaiian press release where the vital records director says that his original vital records show him as being born in Hawaii.
If they refuse to accept that as sufficient proof that the location of his birth was Honolulu, then yes, they’re idiots.

Maurice, I did not say he was a birther. I said the birther mess was providing fodder. There is a difference. As far as the corrupt business goes, well there again, it will provide fodder. I don’t believe that all of the candidates are going to be shooting bb’s the entire campaign. There will probably be bombs.
Also, just for the record, I believe I have said on numerous occasions that it would be best if he just let the whole birther thing go. Further, I don’t believe I have referenced those people who do question the President’s birthplace as idiots. I know what the meaning of the word idiot is. It’s not one used in my day to day vocabulary.
And finally, just because someone feels differently than I feel, I don’t go lobbing insults in their direction. To each his own. As a certified member of the grassroots, I have no idea if this is good political strategy or not. And the “birth” issue ain’t even in my “top ten” issues. (And I’m still definitely a birther). I see no reason not to be at this point. Not sure if it’s in Nathan Deal’s top ten either. It’s difficult to discern with all the outrage over the topic and how it’s magnified to such an extreme by the anti-birthers. What’s the reason to be a die-hard anti-birther? What’s to gain or lose? I don’t get it. What’s wrong with holding politicians to some basic standards? What’s so bad about asking questions that never get answered? Why have multiple versions of a C.O.L.B. and why isn’t someone arrested? The “average Joe” gets fined or arrested for forging documents.

It does have a certain entertainment value to it, doesn’t it? Plus, it really does irritate his fans/supporters, although Deal is the one that started the whole thing (at his constituents’ requests). Deal is the one who ran from news cameras by ducking in bushes. This could have all been over a long time ago if he had handled it differently and not shied away from the press. This is a problem HE created, not us. I wish his fans/supporters would realize this.
