Do It Online

You’ll save trees.

The state has issued more than 80,000 interim driver’s licenses and ID cards, printed on special security paper, since December. That’s when the Department of Driver Services stopped making new licenses at its customer service centers and switched production to a central site.

So while you’re waiting for your new license — the wait should take about two weeks — you get an interim one good for 45 days. People who renew online, however, don’t have to bother with the paper license.

The people of Ga. have been able to renew their licenses on line for years. I’ve done it the last two times mine has come up for renewal. The only problem is that they keep using the same old photo from a decade ago.

That’s less of a problem for me, because I’m not getting prettier.
