Another Challenger For Paul Broun?

Just got an email asking me if I was familiar with a Dr. Christopher Cates, who is an Atlanta (Emory?) cardiologist and apparently a candidate for congress.

Dr Cates has filed with the FEC indicating he is running in the 10th Congressional District, which sets up a potentially well funded candidate to run against Paul Broun.

Additionally, the tipster indicates that Dr. Cates has hired legendary campaign “guru” Tom Perdue. Legendary because Mr. Perdue is famous for separating candidates from their money, with mixed results (see Millner, Chambliss).

Best of luck to Dr. Cates, and to anyone that was eventually counting on an inheritance coming from him.

  1. GOPGrassroots says:

This Emory doctor should stay in Atlanta, get involved on the local level and start by serving the community before seeking to pad his bio, after waking up one morning and thinking “I’ve got enough money to try and purchase a congressional seat”.

Like him or hate him Paul Broun votes the right way, is a proven conservative and will coast to re-election regardless of how much this guy is willing to spend to get his name in lights.

Georgia’s grassroots and elected officials should stand up and say that they have had enough of carpetbagging ego-maniacs, and have had enough of Tom Perdue – we still remember him physically blocking GAGOP Chairwoman Sue Everhart from joining Saxby on stage after her and the grassroots pulled Saxby’s election out for him.

    • drjay says:

how do you know he hasn’t “been serving his community at the local level” this is broun’s first elected office after a variety of failed attempts, how would this guy running be different, this seat was charlie norwood’s fist elected office as well, i’m not saying i know anything about this guy, just wondering if you do either???

  2. John Konop says:

This race should make the John Stewart show!

    From Cason Daniel Sisk

….When it comes to experience my favorite example is of J. Edgar Hoover. He had no field experience in fighting crime, yet his revolutionary ideas led him to building the FBI into a large and efficient crime-fighting organization. It is through new revolutionary ideas and a burning desire to succeed that will propel me to be a great leader that this country so desires…..

IS THIS A JOKE? Do you admire the cross dressing and or the corruption angle Mr. Sisk?

… Late in life and after his death, Hoover became an increasingly controversial figure. He exceeded the jurisdiction of the FBI.[1] He used the FBI to harass political dissenters and activists, to amass secret files on political leaders,[2] and to use illegal methods to collect evidence.[3] It is because of Hoover’s long and controversial reign that FBI directors are now limited to 10-year terms.[4]…..

  3. Progressive Dem says:

Paul Broun = Cynthia McKinney of the Right. Both backbenchers unable to influence a single legislative vote. Both a miniority within a minority. Both ineffective. Both the result of a reapportionment process gone amok. Both embarassments to the State of Georgia.

    • Bucky Plyler says:

ProDem , thank you for giving me one more chance to say this !!

I wish every state in the union had a congressamn like Paul Broun.

      • Progressive Dem says:

Paul Broun has a difficult job staying relevant. In fact, he is probably among the most irrelevant member of Congress. Out of 200 bills he has co-sponsored, 3 have been enacted. None of 13 bills he sponsored have been passed. It’s not like he is ever going to sponsor any meaningful legislation, or forge any legislative compromises. He is off doing the whacky stuff that destroys his credibility with the vast majority of Americans:
        – Proposing to ban the sale of Playboy magazine from all military bases.
        – Voting against the inspection of interstate bridges after the collapse in Minnesota.
        – After the publishing of this dubious book “Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld that’s Conspiring to Islamize America”, he called for the House sergeant at arms to investigate whether the Council on Islamic American Relations (the largest and oldest Muslim organization in the US) had interns/agents on key committees.
        – Stating that Obama, Reid and Pelosi were looking for an excuse to declare martial law
        – Calling Rep Pelosi a “domestic enemy of the Constitution”
        – Introducing his go nowhere resolution to make 2010 the Year of the Bible
        – Declaring global warming is a hoax
        – Fear mongering about “death panels” letting Mama die in agony
        – And his infamous comparison of Obama to Hitler “It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is that’s exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it’s exactly what the Soviet Union did. You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in democratic Germany. We can’t be lulled into complacency,” I’m not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I’m saying is there is the potential.” (see videos)
Of all the problems facing this country, we have Paul Broun focused on this cartload of BS.

      • ByteMe says:

I wish every state in the union had a congressman like Paul Broun.

Well, near as I can tell, only Minnesota and Georgia have one. The rest are trying to avoid “crackpot” these days.

    • Romegaguy says:

except Cynthia was sworn in and Paul Broun is still waiting for that to happen. Why didnt Erick talk about that on Colbert?

      • GeorgiaValues says:

Maybe that’s why the Atlanta Dr. qualified! He’s been reading the reports and watching Colbert from his penthouse. lol

  4. JDP says:

This is hilarious. Another bungle by Tom Perdue.

I’m pretty sure this Dr. Cates intended to file for the 9th district given thats where he was campaigning this weekend. So here we have :
    1) An Atlantan running in North Georgia
    2) A totally befuddled candidate filing in the wrong district
    3) A consultant in Perdue who has found a cash-heavy turkey who he can strip a few hundred grand from.

And you wonder why people hate Tom Perdue. Genius

    • GOPGrassroots says:

I’m pretty sure this guy is running against Broun. He filed his FEC paperwork to run in the 10th, and while they are next to each other, you’d have to be a real moron to file federal papers for the wrong district…the kind of moron you don’t want filing federal bills…

“Citizens of the 10th – when I recently dropped a bill to raise your taxes, I actually meant to lower them. Oops. My bad. lol”

      • JDP says:

If thats the case this guy is an even bigger dope. But I guess thats just the type of person Perdue needs for someone to be convinced to hire him

  5. GOPGeorgia says:

I will confirm that the Walker County GOP Chairman has scheduled Cates to speak. That’s solidly in the Ninth and a very long way away from the Tenth. Can anyone tell me who’s running here? I am losing track. (j/k…kinda)

He’s campaigning in the Ninth. His campaign manager is seeking opportunities for him to speak in the Ninth. You don’t have to live in a district to run or even serve. It just helps.

  6. fishtail says:

Say what you will about him, Tom Perdue is ruthless and takes no prisoners. The other 9th District candidates will taste his venom before it’s all over. If they have any skeletons, Perdue will drag them out of the closet. If they don’t have any skeletons, he will manufacture some. So this race just got a lot more interesting.

  7. Comfortably Southside says:

Being on the Southside I really don’t know anything about Paul Brown. But I could not help making a couple comments on the ProDem’s fantastic post.

1.Stating that Obama, Reid and Pelosi were looking for an excuse to declare martial law. (There actions sure seem like they are)

    2. Calling Rep Pelosi a “domestic enemy of the Constitution” (There is not a bigger enemy in the U.S. right now unless Osama is really hiding in the North Georgia mountains at this very moment)

    3. Declaring global warming is a hoax ( If you could see all the darn “Layers” I have on right now)

    I believe he really won’t see I am right…..
