Unfortunately for some locals, many of these type jobs require a BSEE and a MBA combo and maybe a JD kicker to cull out the riff raff.
A group where the unemployment rate is less than 1.6 % vs 4.6% for general college educated [non BS non Masters].

Unfortunately new hiring is down even for recent MBA grads where 8-28% *[top 30 ramked schools] of new grads last JUNE did not have a job 3 months later [August 2009].

*When you examine new MBA without jobs you find those don’t have a BS as an underlying base degree.

Too many people think a BA or MA is a useful college education.

At least metro ATL has a slightly lower COL than RT, so some will be happy to move further South.

    • ChuckEaton says:

Any jobs are good jobs, whether they require college degrees or not, because they create more jobs. I don’t know if your statement is correct, that most of the Sony jobs will require advanced college degrees, but even so, it would be great for the economy. It’ myopic to think otherwise.

It will be great for the local community to have more folks, with spending money, hiring folks to make additions to their homes, eat in restaurants, buy stuff in the stores, etc… It builds upon itself.

      • ByteMe says:

It’s 120 corporate HQ folks. I doubt all of them need advanced degrees, but it’s definitely not going to make a dent in the unemployment rate in town.

    • Joshua Morris says:

Only the eternal pessimist would find something bad to say about this. No doubt it will create jobs here at all levels. There is no utopia.

  2. Mad Dog says:

Yes, let’s celebrate this company cutting 400 jobs in one state and moving “HQ” to another state.

Sounds like good economic news to me and very good CYA for the CEO.

Who wants to be shot at work by disguntled former employees?

  3. Demonbeck says:

Don’t get too worked up about this. It’s not the electronics giant, it’s merely Erick’s little sister, Sony, moving to Atlanta to work as the Swedish Fry Cook at the Hapeville Chick-Fil-A.

    Bork Bork Bork!

  4. Mad Dog says:

OPS! I missed a detail or two in my reading.

Sony Ericsson is cutting 2000 jobs, …

So will the new headquarters employ 1 CEO, a sexy secretary, a receptionist and 117 security guards?

So … just asking … how many of the 2000 employees will you’all pray for when they get depressed and try to kill themselves?

Sort of a poll on how do you feel about good people losing their jobs during the “Holiday Seasons” versus how do you feel about an adulterous politician who walked down the road to Hell willingly.

      • Mad Dog says:

I don’t see a silver lining in anyone losing a job. Not in India or Indiana. Eternally pessimistic? Maybe. I don’t think anyone on this thread is praying for the unemployed. Unless there’s a personal connection.

They’ll pray for rain. They’ll pray for the Speaker. But they won’t pray for the poor.

So if you want to pat yourself on the back and celebrate the POSSIBILITY of 120 jobs being moved at least temporarily into Atlanta, go for it.

More like reality … 120 jobs were saved for now. No promises for tomorrow.

        • Mad Dog says:

Yea, you’re all about one word answers.

How about sticking Nixon in your big mouth along with Bush II ? Or Reagan with a 270% increase in national debt? Or Bush the First with his, “Read my lips! No new taxes” promise? Or Ford with his pardon of Nixon?

Or how about you just apply your sharp analysis to yourself and your party?

If Obama is personally responsible for counting jobs, then Bush is responsible for ‘errors in intelligence.’ Both the kind made by agencies like the CIA and the ones in the Oval Office when he said the Iraq war … _______ (fill in the blank with the Bush/Cheney lie of your choice.)

          Carter … LOL!

          • Mad Dog says:

Looks like you can’t handle a conversation. Or is that too big of a word?

Or maybe there’s just no answer simple enough for you to defense the GOP et al.

            Wanna try double jepardy?

If Obama is responsible for counting jobs, then is Bush responsbile for bad intelligence?

            And which kills people?

Now you can answer a simple Yes or No.

And, yes. I picked my name to match my personality. Didn’t you get the memo?

It means people have become to greedy when it comes to buying cell phones and the manufacturers have to relentlessly cut costs. Next time you go to buy a phone, don’t try to get the best price; maybe it will keep some people employed.
