They sure know how to indoctrinate them in Mableton

by Pete Randall on November 4, 2009

The parents of kindergartners at Harmony Leland Elementary School in Mableton must just be so proud to have their children in Ms. Susan Marsico’s music class.  Their kids get to sing praises to The One.

I think it’s horribly inappropriate for children to sing songs with controversial, politically charged lyrics like “Barack Obama is our president.” Don’t they know he’s from Keynanesia or Muslimistan or wherever??!?!?!?!?!

I wonder if those same kids sing praise to George Bush when he won re-election? I mean, sure, they are toddlers in Jan 2005, but that’s no excuse.

And on a mean-spirited note, they really should drop the word Harmony from the school’s name.

Be afraid Pete. Be very afraid.

David Staples November 5, 2009 at 9:18 am

I don’t really see much of an issue with the song the Mableton school sang… especially compared to some of the other ones I read there. What exactly is your beef with the song? To me, they’re not really singing praises so much as they’re singing a history lesson. Barack Obama is our new President. Check. Barack Obama is the leader of our land. Well, yeah.. that’s what our President is supposed to be. On November 4, 2008 All the Americans voted in each and every state. Well, yeah, that’s when the Presidential election was. He moved into the white house with his wife, Michelle his daughters, Malia and Sasha and new dog as well. Well, yes, the White House is indeed where the President lives during his Presidency. Hrmm… I could go on examining line by line, but I think I’ve made my point here. There’s nothing to see here… move along…

ByteMe November 5, 2009 at 9:43 am

What’s to see is how really really angry Pete is that a Democrat (and a Black Man? Given Pete’s history here, that’s probably fair to include) is in the White House.

GOPGeorgia November 5, 2009 at 11:23 am

The words are not that out of line, but do we really want kids singing about ANY president? The kids do need to learn how to sing though.

David Staples November 5, 2009 at 11:55 am

I think we should, yes. Shouldn’t the President be a position that inspires people? As a kid, did you ever say “I want to grow up to be President!”? Do we really want to shun our current generation away from that to one of looking down upon Presidents and mocking them? Shouldn’t the position of President still garner respect from the country’s citizens? I’m not saying you have to agree with his policies, but can’t you respect someone while fully disagreeing with them?

ByteMe November 5, 2009 at 12:05 pm

The kids do need to learn how to sing though.

And what better way to be humiliated for the rest of your life than to have it on YouTube?

rugby November 5, 2009 at 1:09 pm

“do we really want kids singing about ANY president”

WTF? This isn’t a serious question, correct?

ByteMe November 5, 2009 at 1:28 pm

Serious question from a local representative of the same party that challenged anyone that was against the Iraq war by calling them a “traitor” and that they were “not supporting the troops”. In other words: bow down to the Republican King, but screw the Democratic one at every turn.

Irony is lost on some people, though.

I am sure the irony of this video will be lost on some people as well.

GOPGeorgia November 5, 2009 at 7:52 pm

You can respect the office of the President without worshiping him as a deity. I don’t recall every being asked to sing about Ford, Carter or Reagan, let alone Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, or JFK. My problem doesn’t have to do with disagreeing with his policies. It’s more about watching selected parts of America looking like North Korea and singing praises to a great and glorious leader, Kim Jong-il, I mean BHO.

It could be just me. Let me know if you sang (or were asked to sing) praises to the President who was in office when you were in school.

ByteMe November 6, 2009 at 6:50 am

So the effort to rebrand airports, roads, politicians — damn near everything that didn’t move fast enough — with the name of “Ronald Reagan”… that isn’t worshipping or anything, right?

rugby November 6, 2009 at 9:24 am

So you don’t want people singing about Washington and Lincoln on President’s Day? Awesome.

For the record, my school had an annual President’s Day celebration and I know mine wasn’t the only one.

“You can respect the office of the President without worshiping him as a deity.”

You never fail to bring the stupid. Which is good for a laugh I’ll give you that.

Naming buildings, roads, and Airports after people is nothing new.

ByteMe November 6, 2009 at 11:07 am

Really? A concerted — some would say “messianic” — effort to name at least one notable public landmark in each U.S. state and all 3067 counties after him?

GOPGeorgia November 6, 2009 at 11:26 am

How many states have a county, school, building, road, airport or so on named Washington? I am not saying Ronald Reagan is Washington, but after Washington, he Monroe, and Jefferson did fairly well in electoral college votes as a percentage. In other words, he was liked.

rugby November 6, 2009 at 12:25 pm

I missed that part of American civics where the percentage of Electoral College votes was indicative of how much popular support a presidential candidate had, or how much he was liked.

Romegaguy November 6, 2009 at 4:24 pm

It was right after the part where if some crazy nutjobs demand to see your birth certificate, you produce one, they dislike it and ask for another one to be produced, you have to produce it.

Okay, how about this… here’s the transcript below, just to save you the time. Now, could you please point out the part below that sounds like they’re worshipping Obama as a deity? I failed to see any mention of the words deity, god, allah, jehovah, or anything else remotely resembling that. Please enlighten me oh blessed GOP one. :-)

I was looking at the first half of the transcript. President Obama is “hope” and “change” and he will be the bridge for all of us. I remember a hymnal called “He is come.” Change has come. “Being both, he cannot take sides.” God loves us all.

“Uniting blacks and whites.”

What an awful message. I think your missing the point. Most, if not all, of what the children are singing is meaningless, hackneyed tripe. If one song is going to brainwash your children, there are much bigger concerns about your child raising abilities.

David Staples November 6, 2009 at 11:45 am

I’m only talking about the school in Mableton. (The post is titled “They sure know how to indoctrinate them in Mableton.”) I don’t see that on the link… I suppose I can check out the YouTube videos to see if that’s what you’re referencing when I get home, but that’s assuming I really care about the issue that much. On a side note, maybe Harmony Leland does a lot of their teaching through singing…

Seems I remember a few porn flicks out there with the word come in them in as well. I suppose they should be considered hymnals as well, since they share 1 out of 3 words in the title? Come on, you can do a bit better than that as for why you claim they’re worshipping him as a deity. You’re reaching here… really reaching…

From the MMM MMM MM video

“He said red, yellow, black or white/All are equal in his sight.”

Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Black and yellow, red and white
They’re all precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world

Whether you’re rich or whether you’re poor
It matters not to Him
He remembers where you’re going
Not where you’ve been

Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Black and yellow, red and white
They’re all precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world

If your heart is troubled
Don’t worry, don’t you fret
He knows that you have heard His call
And he won’t forget

Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Black and yellow, red and white
They’re all precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world

All around the world tonight
His children rest assured
That He will watch and He will keep us
Safe and secure

Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Black and yellow, red and white
They’re all precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world

YouTube is blocked by our proxy at work, so I’ll have to look at it later. The transcript you just posted didn’t mention Obama at all. (Unless of course Obama translates to Jesus in some language I’m not familiar with, or when you’re speaking in tongues.) However, if the transcript you just posted was sung in public school, then indeed I do have problems with it. Not because they’re singing about a President (they’re not), but because they’re singing about Jesus. I’m very familiar with at least the chorus of that song, as I was raised in a southern baptist church. (Though from what I remember it was Red or yellow, black or white, though I guess the order doesn’t really matter that much.) But if you’re saying this childrens’ Christian hymn shouldn’t be sung in a public school, I wholeheartedly agree with you. I just don’t think they’re talking about Obama here.

rugby November 6, 2009 at 1:32 pm

David, David, David, David…When will you ever learn? In the minds of right-wing nuts, Obama=Jesus. Or wait, is it all of Obama’s supporters think Obama=Jesus? Or is it, Jesus=Obama?

At any rate, I believe you get my drift.

benevolus November 6, 2009 at 1:31 pm

I don’t think we are supposed to refer to people as “red” or “yellow” anymore.

GOPGeorgia November 6, 2009 at 6:43 pm

All I am saying is the took the basic concept of a childrens Christain song and tweeked it every so slightly and sung about President Obama in the same way that that kids sing about Jesus. The first line I metioned in quotes “He said red, yellow, black or white/All are equal in his sight.” is from the MMM MMM MM video, talking about BHO. Check it out when you get home.

ByteMe November 6, 2009 at 8:28 pm

I think it works both ways. My kids come home from day care singing religious songs to the tune of “London Bridge is falling down…”

Romegaguy November 6, 2009 at 9:02 pm

A lot of the “standard” religious songs written in the 1700-1800’s were reworked lyrics to drinking songs of the day.

ByteMe November 6, 2009 at 10:08 pm

There’s one song my kids sing that I swear the tune sounds exactly like the theme from “Bewitched”.
