I love the height requirement.

Starting Thursday, MARTA fares will go up for the first time since 2001, parking fees will rise, and children will have to pass a height requirement to ride free, according to MARTA.

My just turned four year old would probably fail the height requirement. She’s taller than a lot of six year olds.

“She’s taller than a lot of six year olds.”

Superior Viking genes no doubt.

Height requirement? Are they stacking kids on top of each other now?

TPNoGa October 1, 2009 at 6:02 pm

I thought they already went up. I have been paying $2 each way for a while.

Huh? Did you buy your Breeze card from a ticket scalper?

Technocrat October 1, 2009 at 6:32 pm

The problem is not the RETAIL $2 price but the discount package fares;
20 trips for $34 or 7 day pass for $15.

The minimum one way charge should be priced at a gallon of regular gasoline equivalent and reset monthly.

This is one of the silliest comments I’ve read on Peach Pundit in ages, and that says a lot. Number one, the discount package quote you just gave is ALREADY more expensive than a gallon of gas per trip. Number two, there are two totally separate classes of MARTA riders. If you’re a Gwinnett or North Fulton resident, riding the train to the airport or the occasional Falcons game, this halfway makes sense. But for the overwhelming majority of MARTA riders, lower-class in-town residents using it as their primary mode of transportation and only traveling a few miles per trip, it’s insanely myopic to view that in the same light as the first group.

As a former occasional Marta rider I damn sure don’t like to mess with all that cruise card crapola and tolkens, ect… What the heck is wrong with quarters? These fancy little systems are all probably the outcome of some insider ripoff deal. As far as I’m concerned this is just another barrier to entry. For the occasional ride cost is a minimal factor. Then there’s the shenanigans with the former C.E.O. What a disgrace. Bad vibes all around. Another reason this taxpayer couldn’t give a flip about MARTA.

Game Fan,
Yeah, I hate having to mess with “tolkens” too. Disgusting little creatures.

But I’m OK with JRR Tolkien. :)

I’ll go on record as supporting letting all Hobbits ride MARTA at half price.

I think they get in free on the “height requirement”

Technocrat October 2, 2009 at 8:35 am

I don’t know where you people buy gasoline but it runs around $2.30 per gallon . The IRS allows 55 cents per mile [which is less than true cost] but close if you can take 1 000 miles per month. Gasoline currently represents 22% of driving costs

I was assuming that the typical sequence of rides would be 4 miles. or 8 miles per day.

Explain to me how $34 per month compares to $350 per month to drive a wreck of a car with insurance and parking.

Marta was meant to be cheaper not a total government give away

ByteMe October 5, 2009 at 9:18 am

I thought the “average” Atlanta commute was 60 minutes each way…?

Tinkerhell October 5, 2009 at 8:56 am

What has height got to do with it?!!
Why don’t they do this the right way & base it on weight! And not just for kids, do it for everyone. Treat the Marta users like normal freight and base the charge on how much it actually costs to move one’s fat fanny around town.

:)

That would be awesome!

I like the way BART does it in San Francisco. (I think it was there that I saw this system anyways.) Charge by the distance ridden. If you’re going from North Springs to the Airport, it should be twice as much as if you’re going from North Springs to Five Points. Someone riding for a stop or two shouldn’t have to pay the same price as someone riding the entire length of the line.
