Somebody, Somewhere, In a County Beginning With “C”, To Receive Disaster Aid: UPDATED

From the (Lib’ral) AJC:

Carroll, along with Douglas, Cobb and Paulding, have appeared to have suffered the most damage in this week’s floods. But when Gov. Sonny Perdue announced on Thursday that President Barack Obama has declared a federal disaster in four Georgia counties, it was Cherokee and not Carroll listed with the other three.

But, then the White House issued a press release saying that Carroll was on the disaster list, not Cherokee. Compounding the confusion, however, Perdue communications director Bert Brantley told the AJC moments ago that the official document the governor received from the White House says Cherokee.

My favorite part of this is the AJC blog comments where obvious Ox plants blame the Lib’ral AJC for the mix up.

We all know that Clayton County has been a disaster area for years. Why can’t we agree to send them the aid and move along?

UPDATED: Aaron Gould Sheinin has now indicated that The White House &/or Governor’s office have agreed to a face saving move to include both Cherokee and Carroll Counties in this first declaration. Clayton County remains a disaster without aid.

anybody think Ox’s estimate of 250mm damage to be way off…..it does not even smell right!

Too little or too much?

I thought it to be so low that I was surprised it came from out of his mouth. I may be off base, but I doubt it. Looks like Shirley says a billion, I think she is hitting the rim.

The growing list of parallels between John Oxendine and Dr. Evil proceeds apace.

(Can anyone confirm the possession of a monocle? A Cheshire cat?)

Yeah, it’s low. Austell housing damage alone is going to cost much of that.

But, General Beauregard Lee survived!

Having worked at the DOI, the estimates start coming in as insurance companies report what their adjusters are processing (and keep in mind government structures are insured too).

Franklin’s estimates are GUESSES. Notice the are spreads for some of her numbers.

The insurance claims dollars will continue to rise as insurance adjusters continue to gather the hard numbers and Oxendine’s office will likely raise the numbers as more data comes in.

Isn’t the whole point of FEMA aid to quickly grasp and understand the UNinsured losses?

FEMA will reject a disaster aid application if too many of the losses are insured. This happened a little over a year ago with the series of tornados that included the one that hit downtown.

I agree with you Jason that Franklin’s guesses are just guesses and I think they’re likely high.

And I also agree that government structures are insured, although flood (and mold) insurance is a different beast, since there are limits on the subsidized kind most folks get. And a lot of homes and businesses went without. But I’m pretty sure Ox was estimating total damage and not total government handout, so whether it’s insured doesn’t matter.

On the other hand, this is really just another form of “stimulus” package for the local economy, because it’s putting construction crews back to work.

As expected..there are processes to arriving to these numbers that I am not aware of. I do think that this brings me to a point (I have not come to any conclusions on who I think should be gov.)….Oxendine seems to say some pretty stupid things….and the fact that Shirly can guess up a number better than the Insurance commish is pretty sad.

Gildo September 25, 2009 at 8:11 am

his assessments and gut feel of things seems to be of a lower quality. our politicians need to be able to shoot from the hip with accuracy or not open their mouth till they are prepared…I don’t think Ox has that in him

Douglas begins with a ‘C’?

The irony of those mostly “RedState” counties grovelling for aid from Obama is not lost on this citizen.

Maybe we should have some town hall meetings so people an foam about ‘big gummit’.

ByteMe September 24, 2009 at 5:07 pm

Partisans don’t do irony so well, though. You might have to explain it to them.

The United States cannot afford to get bogged down in a quagmire in Clayton County with no exit strategy.

Brought to you by the same folks who couldn’t spell the President’s name correctly…

ByteMe September 24, 2009 at 8:36 pm

I give up: which folks? Which President?

Obis
You forgot the apostrophe in “Obi’s”. And after the mud clears out where can I get some of that lithia water? As I understand it, from following Mike Tyson Lithium is used for relaxation. What’s the deal?

Game Fan September 24, 2009 at 9:42 pm

If you take a mud bath in Lithia Springs would this be extra relaxing? Wasn’t someone asking where to go for vacation?
