Oglethorpe County GOP “Low Country Boil” Straw Poll Results (UPDATED)

by Icarus on September 20, 2009

I never knew that Oglethorpe County was in the “Low Country”, but it is just outside of God’s country, so I won’t quibble with them.

Here’s the press release they just issued regarding their event and straw poll from yesterday:

Crawford, GA – September 19, 2009 – Despite heavy rains throughout the day, the 1st Annual Oglethorpe County Republican Party Low Country Boil was a huge success. In a county that has only about 10,000 residents, the Depot in Crawford had almost 400 people in attendance. Other counties like Barrow, Clarke, Elbert, Hart, Franklin, Jackson, Madison, and Oconee and their party members helped to make this have a regional impact, which brought in most of the candidates for statewide office.

The rains forced the crowd into a more confined area, but it gave the candidates attending a chance to speak face-to-face to the masses as they entered to get their food. Throughout the event, the candidates were able to address the crowd for a few minutes, with brief intermissions for songs by a phenomenal 10-year old Country music singer, Sylvia Walker. Big name speakers like Rep. Nathan Deal, Secretary of State Karen Handel, and Rep. Paul Broun all spoke to the packed house.

Party Chairman Kirk Shook thanks all the party members who worked to make the event successful. Steve McCannon, event organizer, and Joel Gossett, cooking committee chair, both showed great leadership skills in preparation and execution of the event.

The 2nd Annual Oglethorpe County Republican Party Low Country Boil is tentatively scheduled for September 25, 2010.

I thought for sure that given the area of the state that Deal would have won this straw poll. Something must be going on out there on the ground. Karen has won or nearly won every straw poll that’s taken place and John Oxendine hasn’t even really been close.

Things are shifting in the Governor’s race that’s for sure. I guess I need to tune in a bit closer to what’s going on out there…

I can’t wait for the “in depth”, always insightful analysis from people who don’t know what they’re talking about.

And how this means oxendine is surging or macginnitie has momentum or other stupidity.

They both got their ass kicked, and you know what it means???

Absolutely nothing. Nothing. No, seriously, don’t open your mouth, it means nothing.

Straw Polls are just for fun, but I do find them interesting. When is this Eric Johnson surge going to take place?

Also, on a side note. I learned in school that “First Annual” is not correct grammatically. Something cannot be considered to be an Annual Event until the second year.

The Eric Johnson surge already happened, you must have missed it. I think he’s lucky he’s considered top 4.

Congrats to Kirk Shook and the Oglethorpe GOP for putting on a great event. I attended the event and Handel and Deal were the only gubernatorial candidates that I saw present.

Note that the post has been updated with 20 undercounted hanging chads in favor of Doug MacGinnitie.
