News comes today that Air Force First Lt. Joseph Dennis Helton, 24, of Monroe died on Sept. 8 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle near Baghdad. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Monroe. An additional service will be held at 7 p.m. that same day at Meadows Funeral Home in Monroe. On Thursday, a procession will leave the funeral home at 11 a.m. for a military graveside service at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.
Also, Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Aaron M. Kenefick, 30, of Roswell and Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Edwin W. Johnson Jr., 31, of Columbus, paid the ultimate price last week in the struggle for liberty during operations in Afghanistan. Both were assigned to the 3rd Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.
