Rather than take it to a regular grand jury, Gwinnett DA Danny Porter has asked that a “special purpose grand jury” be empaneled. The grand jury will look at about six land purchases made by Gwinnett County over the last five years:
Each land deal involved politically connected developers who had ties to county commissioners who pushed for the purchases, which were at inflated prices and based on questionable appraisals.
“I’m going to recommend that they do an in-depth evaluation of those,” Porter said. “The red flags, so to speak, are the relationships between the seller and a commissioner.”
Porter said he would recommend that the grand jury delve into the value of the properties and the county’s appraisals of the land.
The grand jury would have the power to subpoena documents, to compel witnesses to attend and to hire experts to assist in the review, Porter said.

When is Mr. Porter’s next election?
porter was just reelected this past november, and was unopposed at that…
He’d likely win even without this, but you gotta admit that if he finds what he’s looking for, he can try to move up the food chain with some nice commissioner feathers in his cap.
I am not awash in the same cynicism….Porter is looking out for us and seeking redress against some very public wrongs. We also have Solicitor General, Szabo looking out for us as well, as she unclothes those masked in LLC’s. Both Porter and Szabo are to be commended.
Timing is the arbiter of good acts. These land deals have been rampant in GWINCO for over a decade, so why now the push for transparency? That said, good on Mssrs. Porter and Szabo.
Hopefully because he now has enough for an indictment(s)
Maybe so, maybe its’ just the rain. Or maybe GWINCO land deals wanna make me puke.
The lot of ‘em ought to be ashamed of the hodge podge of garbage built there.
