A friend of mine active in GOP politics emails to say he has heard Jeff Chapman today filed paperwork to run for Governor.
Please God, let this be not true. We have a crowded field as is.
Actual email:
I hear Jeff Chapman justed filed paperwork to run for Gov.
I’m not kidding.

Well, Austin Scott won’t have to worry about the embarassment of coming in 6th any more.
I bet Chapman places ahead of Scott…if they both qualify in April.
Perhaps my snark wasn’t finely tuned last night.
Now Austin Scott should set his goal as finishing 6th, but he won’t come close. Austin now has to worry about the embarassment of finishing 7th.
And I think Chapman can do much better than 6th, but a lot of cookies will have to crumble his way before he can move in to West Paces.
He’s a dark horse, but in an anti-incumbent, anti-establishment year, he’s got some credentials that could move some things his way.
I agree. At least he has something to stand out with (i.e., “I’m a mavrick and have a record to show it”). Scott still doesn’t have a niche.
Once the true conservatives get to know Jeff, he will smoke the competition. He is a true conservative with a reputation of being “A Man of the People.” I live in Middle Ga and will be voting for Senator Chapman. I hope ya’ll get to know him before you decide he’s not the man for the job. He is the only man for the job!
I like the guy – the only true independent Republican in the Senate. The guy is pretty much the only honest and frank legislator I can think of right now.
I guess he has nothing to lose. Since “leadership” hates him, he’ll never get a chairmanship.
Puts a lot of senators in jam I suppose. Guess this hurts eric and deal the most.
Isn’t that the guy that shot John Lennon? Sorry, that was Mark Chapman.
um, Mark David Chapman.
Assassins always prefer to go by the triple name standard.
Erick Erick Erickson comes to mind
Of course, in his case, that would be merely a character assassin.
……seems like there is a reporter name Chapman at the AJC….could be him ya know if the name is spelled right……we’ll see.
This is exciting (if it’s true)! Give me a yard sign and bumper sticker!!! He’ll come in better than 6th, Loyalty… and he’ll really mess up EJ’s plan! He’s also doesn’t appear to be the ONLY independently thinking Republican in the Senate. I could list several who are frank, hoenst and not afraid to stray from the reservation: Heath. Cowsert. Butterworth. Douglas. Regardless, Go JEFF!
He has certainly stood up to the in-crowd that wants to turn Jeckyll Island into a gated community for wealthy people (an make lots of money for a few insiders along the way), and he has suffered at the hands of the leadership of his own party as a result. Frankly, anyone whom the Republican leadership has abused must have some good qualities. However, he is sorely needed in the General Assembly.
This is absolutely laughable, but I think you guys are jumping to conclusions prematurly in assuming he will be running as a Republican. If this proves to be fact (that he is running) it probably stems from the fact that he realizes he is going to lose his Senate seat in the ’10 primary anyway.
Loyalty can you site some of the legislation he has sponsored? Not much to site. The coast will be better served by whomever replaces him, period.
Site some of his legislation? Well as a judge I’m sure you can do your own research. And unlike most people on this site, I’m not a Fantard of any of the candidates for governor.
A judge? Doing research? It is to laugh.
I gave you a thumbs up for “fantard”.
Personally I can’t afford to get emotionally involved with any of the candidates. It has to do with the whole “net neutrality” deal.
Lose his seat. You must not know his district or those that have stated they are candidates for his seat. 1st is an ex county commissioner that was not well liked. He also ran for President of the US in the last election. Yep, tuff comp there… a man that thinks because he was on the county commission gives him the credibility to run for President. 2nd is the same man that Jeff smoked in his last election. I say smoked because Jeff won by 54% and his opposition spent three times the money that Jeff did. No, NO, NO, Senator Chapman would have won re-election.
Is Hoke O’Kelly running this year?
Chapman had a perfect RLC score in 2006-2008 session.
Smith has a perfect score in 2009.
I’m quite happy to see Chapman in the race.
Hey Judge, Chapman authored tough legislation protecting private property from eminent domain abuse; he also is the author of the bill that saved Jekyll Island State Park’s south end from commercial exploitation at the hands of the Reynolds family, which prevented Jekyll’s youth soccer facility and 4-H environmental education center from being converted into condos and estate homes. Sounds like some good legislation to me.
Jeff Chapman just launched his campaign site, well, it is a mini site, the full site will be up soon.

Whether it is fighting to preserve the integrity of Jekyll Island State Park or defending private property owners against eminent domain, his reputation as the Senator who puts himself on the line to serve with honor has earned Jeff Chapman plenty of name recognition. It’s clear that Chapman is in this race for one reason only, and that is to do the right thing for the people of Georgia. He is committed to winning, but win or lose, this is a man whose candidacy will have a positive impact on the state. Chapman has consistently demonstrated that not only is he unafraid of defeat, he is also unafraid of being raked over the coals by his own party, because he stands up for his convictions rather than tow the party line. Those convictions include, among other things, a commitment to transparency in government and the rights of the individual. Above all, Chapman believes in serving with honor those who elected him. Those of us who have been privileged to spend time around this man know that he is unequivocally the real deal. Jeff Chapman’s ethics cannot be compromised, and precisely because he is willing to raise uncomfortable questions and to vote across party lines to avoid defeat bad legislation, his race for Governor will be a victory for the people of Georgia, whatever the outcome. Imagine electing an HONEST Governor for Georgia…what a breath of fresh air!
