I just heard from a State employee that the State computer system has ground to a halt. When my source called the IT department to ask for help he was told the system was down because if the Michael Jackson funeral.

That would certainly explain the problems I’m having with the SEC site.

Also makes sense, assuming a lot of State employees are trying to watch the events on their computers. For a home connection with just a couple of computers, not that big of a deal. For a business – of any form, including govt – with thousands of computers, MUCH bigger strain on the network.

Unfortunately, the people streaming audio as well (nowhere NEAR the strain on a network that video is, though certainly a potential bottleneck) are probably going to get caught in any backlash that results.

Is it all traced back to the Sloppy Floyd Building?

I don’t know, let’s check Wikipedia to see if Handel’s entry has changed.

Doesn’t matter now that she showed only $430k…………..the end is in sight.
Back to S of S for her.
Many incumbents may decide to stay where they are, after all they have until May to decide.

Even Deal can always go back to the House.

Jeremy Jones July 7, 2009 at 5:50 pm

I believe Deal will do so.

Henry Waxman July 8, 2009 at 11:59 pm

So, everybody that has announced that they are running for the GA-09 seat will just give up if Deal jumps back into the race???

Rep. Lewis blasts King for speaking ‘evil’ of Jackson
Has Lewis lost it?

THEHILL-Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) says that GOP New York Rep. Peter King was “off the wall” in calling Michael Jackson a “pervert.”

King caused a firestorm on Sunday when, in a video clip posted on YouTube, he said that the media “disgraced itself” with the wall-to-wall coverage of the death of the former pop star, who King called “a pervert … a child molester … a pedophile.”

On Tuesday, Lewis told The Hill that those comments were “inappropriate and unnecessary.”

“To speak evil of the deceased at a time that his family and fans are mourning is not fitting or appropriate,” the civil-rights icon said.

View from Nerdsville:

I find it remarkable that from this point on, IT professionals may actually call this type of phenomenon the MJ Effect. Michael’s legacy will live forever.

Harry July 8, 2009 at 7:38 pm

If there was a network problem, it couldn’t possibly be the MJ Effect. Net admins do need some level of intelligence.

bluemcduff July 8, 2009 at 11:06 pm

If the IT people are worth their salt they can find everybody who did this–every company and state government has an Acceptable Use Policy on doing non-germane things like this.

But Harry, you’re right if the IT admins saw this ramping up they should have clamped down on it immediately–shutting down all outside access if need be.

There usually is wiggle room for a little bit of stuff like this in the AUP but since you can’t fire everybody who tied up the network because of this (although I wish they would–if some of them complain go after the loudest ones) I’d fine them a nontrivial amount of money to get their attention and let them know that won’t be tolerated.

bluemcduff July 8, 2009 at 11:16 pm

And if I’m the IT Admin in that situation–I’d call a meeting, single a few people out–show them a hard copy of their login, IP address and history showing they went to those sites and have a nastygram put in their personnel file showing they broke the rules on top of enforcing the AUP because it costs tons of money to waste bandwidth like that even if you are the government.

Fact remains, newer IT test books will prolly demote the NJ Effect. Will IT departments befin to anticipate the MJ Effect by correlating their network use ploicies to world events?

I think it is interesting, in a nerdy sort of way.

I saw that Princess Diana still has the record for “most watched” memorial service, she barely beat out our “Diana” Michael Jackson. Of course Diana was before internet video, and the “most watched” numbers don’t include the Michael Jackson effect.
