Austin Scott’s “Walk of Georgia”

by Buzz Brockway on July 2, 2009

Austin Scott, State Rep. and GOP candidate for Governor is taking it to the street. Here’s an update I received from him via email:

Good morning,

I’m beginning the sixth day of my 1,000 mile Walk of Georgia, and I want to update everyone on my progress and share some of the highlights of the journey so far. Passing through Walker, Chattooga, and Floyd counties, I’ve met many remarkable people and have witnessed the beauty of some of the more remote corners of our great state—above all, I’ve listened and heard the voices of the people who make Georgia a place to be proud to call home.

From the start, our goal for this walk has been to meet the citizens, listen to their concerns, and ask for their support. Please take a look below at some of the media we have generated throughout our journey. You can follow my walk on www.WalkingWithAustin.com.

According to his email, he’s been receiving quite a bit of local media coverage, which of course for a campaign is pure gold.

Walk Forrest Walk!

Jeff July 2, 2009 at 10:32 am

Yeah, I know for a fact he’s had coverage in Rome and Polk County (Cedartown/Rockmart) so far, as well as Tifton and I’m pretty sure he’s had coverage in Chickamauga.

I’m also watching it decently closely for SWGAPolitics.com, and I’m even going to get out there and walk with him when he’s on the Columbus – Bainbridge leg. I have some serious policy issues with the guy, and there really isn’t much chance at all I’d vote for him in November, but July is a different animal altogether, and right now he stands a serious chance at getting my vote in July.

drjay July 2, 2009 at 10:35 am

why would you bother voting for someone in july that you readily admit little interest in voting for in november?

Buzz Brockway July 2, 2009 at 10:39 am

Because Jeff’s a Libertarian. They do that kind of stuff all the time. ;-)

Jeff July 2, 2009 at 10:54 am

Because while Ray McBerry is probably the most actual Liberty-loving candidate the GOP has, he is also just as much of a Theocrat as John Oxendine. So he’s out.

Scott will at least listen to those he disagrees with and explain his positions, and he’s open to new ideas and possibly changing his position if your argument is persuasive.

If I’m going to be overruled, I at least like to be listened to first, and Scott does that.

That, plus the passion for his family that I saw when I asked him about challenging Marshall showed me that he is a genuine man of deep convictions and has his priorities right.

I can work with a man like that. He’s not the best candidate overall, which is why he won’t be getting my vote in July. Monds is by FAR the best candidate overall.

But looking at what the GOP is offering, Scott is by FAR the best I’ve seen from that bunch so far as far as balancing both sanity and liberty, and that’s why I can consider him for July.

Jeff July 2, 2009 at 10:56 am

“I can work with a man like that. He’s not the best candidate overall, which is why he won’t be getting my vote in July November. Monds is by FAR the best candidate overall.”

Oops, sorry!

fundy1611 July 2, 2009 at 12:09 pm

Besides being a stay-at-home Dad, what has Mr. Monds accomplished in his life?

Jeff July 2, 2009 at 12:15 pm

fundy:

Mr. Monds teaches his own kids – most people can’t say that.

He is also the President of his local NAACP chapter – few can say that.

He is also NOT a politician – meaning he is one of VERY few running that are in the perfect position to fix the things the politicians have screwed up.

fundy1611 July 2, 2009 at 12:18 pm

My wife homeschools our kids and is president of the ladies missionary fellowship at church. Is it too late for her to run?

Jeff July 2, 2009 at 12:22 pm

I don’t know, fundy. Did SHE get more than a MILLION votes as a third party?

John Monds did – barely 8 months ago.

fundy1611 July 2, 2009 at 12:29 pm

You mean the 1 million liberal democrats that would vote for a communist before they’d vote for a republican? Don’t insult our intelligence with that garbage. You know that he gets less than 5 or 10 percent if the Dems had fielded a candidate.

Again, what has the guy ever done? Has he at least managed a RaceTrac?

Jeff July 2, 2009 at 12:37 pm

fundy:

John Monds’ 1,076,726 votes last year were in line with the numbers Handel, Baker, Ox, and even Perdue pulled in their 2006 races.

That number is BETTER than Purdue, Barnes, and Baker got in 2002 – and STILL in line with the Ox.

It is BETTER than Ox’s numbers in both 1994 and 1998.

Honestly, I don’t know the guy’s biography. I started paying attention to him November 5 last year. I’ve talked to him several times this year, including at the LP-Ga convention back in April, and the guy is a common-sense Libertarian – EXACTLY what we need on West Paces Ferry Rd.

fundy1611 July 2, 2009 at 12:41 pm

“Honestly, I don’t know the guy’s biography.” …. LOL

You’re supporting a guy for governor based solely on his party affiliation. Hmmmm, isn’t that we you Libertarians accuse us Repubs of ??? Can we at least do enough research to confirm that he has actually held a paying job at one point in his life? Unbelievable.

fundy1611 July 2, 2009 at 12:46 pm

GREAT!!!!!!!! THE GUY HAS NEVER HAD A JOB!!! THIS IS HIS ENTIRE RESUME POSTED AT HIS WEBSITE!!! YOU WANT THIS CHUMPS FIRST PAYING JOB TO BE AS GOVERNOR!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

John Monds is a 1983 graduate of J.M. Tate High School in Gonzalez, Florida and a 1987 graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia where he received his Bachelors degree in Banking and Finance. John married his wife, Dr. Kathaleena Edward Monds, in 1998 and has four children: Akintunde, Cazembe, Halima and Malik.

Monds earned the 2002 Superior Service Award and the 2003 Omega Man of the Year Award – both from the Mu Beta Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. In 2003 he earned the Superior Service Award from the aforementioned fraternity’s state organization. In 2005 he was named Man of the Year by the Grady County NAACP.

In his capacity as a member and currently President of the Grady County NAACP, Monds has held financial literacy classes for the Holder Park Summer Program, helped implement the Freedom Day Health Fair and advocated for citizens who believed they had been treated unjustly. He is a twenty year member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and has held various leadership positions on the local and state level including President of the Mu Beta Beta chapter. Monds also serves on the Grady County Planning Commission, Grady County Habitat for Humanity board, the Libertarian Party of Georgia Executive Committee and the Grady County Fine Arts Project.

Jeff July 2, 2009 at 12:49 pm

Actually, I’m supporting the guy because I’ve personally discussed the issues with him and he is acceptably close to my own views.

As much as you may think so, I really don’t put too much emphasis on party label. If a GOP person agrees with me on an issue, I’ve got no problems supporting them on that issue, and if there are enough of those issues that we agree on without too many major disagreements on other issues, I’ll consider supporting them overall. Same with a Democrat.

fundy1611 July 2, 2009 at 1:10 pm

The thread speaks volumes of your blind allegience to the Libertarian Party. Monds needs to learn how to earn a paycheck before wanting to govern the rest of us who work for a living. What a joke. This is the best the Libertarians can come up with? A self-promoter who makes his wife support the family so he can run for office. Pure silliness.

Doug Deal July 2, 2009 at 1:13 pm

fundy,

If nothing else his world view needs to be tested with a dose of reality by working for a living. Look no further than this type of nonsense as to why people will never take the Libertarian party seriously.

Trey O'Callaghan July 2, 2009 at 10:43 am

I admire the walk, but I still would like to see Scott run for Congress.

tocallaghan July 2, 2009 at 10:45 am

I admire the walk, but I would still like to see Scott run for Congress.

Jeff July 2, 2009 at 10:59 am

Maybe in another decade or two, once his son is in college/off on his own. MAYBE.

tocallaghan July 2, 2009 at 11:18 am

Well the odds are just so stacked against him for this gubernatorial race that it seems a waste. I know there still is a long way to go until the primary, but it is extremely doubtful that he could overtake Oxendine, Handel, and Deal. He is looking at a last or second to last finish right now. I’m still undecided for the race though. Maybe the walk will give him supporters though. Who knows.

I am Spartacus.

Jeremy Jones July 2, 2009 at 12:15 pm

I started the walk with Austin in Chickamauga. I walked with him for about 2 blocks, I would have walked further, but that is where my car was parked.

Great guy, I enjoyed seeing him again.

LoyaltyIsMyHonor July 2, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Great guy, I enjoyed seeing him again.

akagorilla July 2, 2009 at 1:04 pm

I would have walked further but then I forgot why I was in Chickamauga to begin with.

anewday July 2, 2009 at 2:47 pm

I believe that a lot of people are going to be surprised by Austin’s campaign. He should have no problem getting the sportsmen/outdoorsmen since he is the only TRUE one in the whole field. Austin is one of three candidates actually born in the state of Georgia (Deal, Scott, McBerry). He is one of three who are actual small business owners (Scott, McBerry, Johnson). He is one of two who have recent experience working with Georgia’s budget (Scott and Johnson). And he is one of three who has any legislative experience (Scott, Deal, Johnson). Austin has been in Georgia’s House of Representatives for 14 years. In that 14 years he has chaired the Governmental Affairs committee. He is also apart of the Ways and Means committee, Appropriation committee, and Rules committee. Those along with governmental affairs are the most important committees in the House. In the Govemental Affairs Committee he oversaw the passage of the Voter ID law, and in the rules committee they put his language into the bill that ultimately got it passed. That’s right, Karen Handel, while a champion of the law, had nothing to do with with law and was not even elected Sec. of State when the law passed. Austin has also been a staunch protector of 2nd amendment rights and he was the only one who had the nerve to stand up against a resolution that stated that Barack Obama had “unimpeachable reputation for integrety, vision, and passion for public service…” Unimpeachable?!?! There isn’t a President who has served that has not done something somewhere down the line that could be considered unimpeachable.

As for the other candidates.

Oxendine: Have you ever seen the man talk? You can see through him like a piece of glass. All he wants is power. He has already got in trouble with fundraising. The Dems will definately use that against him. God only knows what else they will find. He got in trouble with the State of Georgia and his blue lights permits, and he has bought multiple luxury cars on the tax payers dime. Of course he is the front runner right now he has been running for over a year for governor. Much longer then anyone else. Also he has been insurance commissioner. While that is respectful he has never had to deal with any of the REAL problems that Georgians as a whole face. No legislative experience and all of his executive experience comes with dealing with Insurance Companies. Those companies which give him HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of dollars for campaigns.

Karen Handel: She started, but she never finished college. She ran and won her seat as chairman of Fulton County. Before her term was up she began campaigning for Sec. of State. She won Sec. of State. Before that term was up she began running for Gov. of Georgia. She has a history of starting things, but never finishing them. She takes credit for things she did not do (i.e. Voter ID law). Also she put the petition for the Voter ID law on her CAMPAIGN website. Not the Sec. of State website, the office that this battle is being fought out of, but her campaign website. I would sign the petition myself, but I know that everyone who signs the petition goes into her database for her campaign.

Nathan Deal: Look at his record. He rarely introduces things to Congress. Even when it was Republican controlled and you think he may try. He comes from Hall County, same county as Casey Cagel. I am not to sure that having two people from the same county in the two most powerful seats will be good for the other citizens of Georgia. Hall County will love it, but I am not to sure about anyone else.

Johnson: A wimp for backing out against Cagle. I think he could have won and he would have had my support. Not from Georgia. Born and RAISED in Louisiana. Could not fulfill his committments as leadership in the Georgia State Senate.

McBerry: While I can sympathis with him on many issues, he is a little extreme for my blood. He wants to say eff of to Washington. Well we will see how that tune changes when he learns that HALF of Georgia’s budget comes from federal funds, and when our state ceases to operate because of his pride of not taking funds from an Obama administration.

Just my two cents.

fundy1611 July 2, 2009 at 6:19 pm

Scott: Hooked on phonics.

B Balz July 2, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Laugh as you may, however, Walkin’ Lawton Chiles WON Florida and was one of its’ most beloved Governors.

I laud Austin Scot’s integrity, style under pressure as Chair, Gov’t Affairs Cmte.

As a few of us will recall, that Austin Scott was punished and quickly vindicated for his decisions. Anyone who can stand up to Party leadership so that the Public is represented deserves a good voter turnout.

I was there, I saw it.

macho July 2, 2009 at 3:10 pm

I’ve always liked Austin, but it appears as if his campaign has taken on a populist overtone; which as a Conservative, this scares me a little.

Icarus July 2, 2009 at 3:13 pm

I will no longer consider Austin an also ran.

…now he’s an also walk.

Doug Deal July 2, 2009 at 4:01 pm

I hear that walking for office is better for your knees than running anyway.

Romegaguy July 2, 2009 at 4:53 pm

I will no longer consider Austin an also ran.

…now he’s an also walk.

Dash Riptide July 2, 2009 at 4:57 pm

If I ever run for office, I’ll probably do it on an elliptical.

B Balz July 2, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Sheesh!

Happy B Day America!

Red Phillips July 2, 2009 at 3:57 pm

“HALF of Georgia’s budget comes from federal funds”

anewday, isn’t this precisely the problem and the reason we need someone like McBerry?

I don’t care a bit about Mond’s qualifications. Unfortunately, at this point in time, being a third party candidate is not about getting elected. It is about making a statement, spreading a message, and giving people an alternative. Since he will not under any conceivable scenario win, what difference does it make if he is qualified for a position he will never hold? The NAACP membership concerns me more. The NAACP is a bunch of PC peddlin’, reverse discrimination supportin’ libs. There is nothing libertarian about the organization.

anewday July 2, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Yeah until the interstates are not driveable and public parks and services start closing down. Live in a nonsensical world if you want, but in the real word a state and federal goverment have to coincide with one another. Not threaten one another. Austin Scott has stated during his campaign that he will not take federal funds for social programs, but there are federal funds that will have to be taken. Georgia’s transportation is closely linked with taking federal funds. Think our transportation problems are bad now, wait until the fight between McBerry and our federal government gets to a point where either they will not send funds or he will not accept them. Hope you live within walking distance of your job when this happens.

fundy1611 July 2, 2009 at 6:26 pm

Don’t care about qualifications? How about knowing what is means to earn a paycheck and pay taxes. And yes, heading up the communist NAACP means he has greater allegiance to his race than to the Constitution. Monds, like most libertarian party members, is a joke.

B Balz July 3, 2009 at 7:07 am

Oddly, the Mondsonian Front for Thread Jacking (MFFTJ) was not called out by anyone, so I am doing it now.

What part of this Austin Scott thread can be construed as a topic for Monds?

In the future, I will be more vigilent against the nefarious MFFTJ!

Icarus July 3, 2009 at 9:36 pm

You clearly HATE LIBERTY!

Monds got over A MILLION VOTES!

Every topic is about Monds, because he is the only candidate that is about LIBERTY!

Every other comment not about Monds makes you a STATIST!

You make me sick.

Doug Deal July 4, 2009 at 8:27 am

What’s interesting is that Almond Joy’s got nuts, Mounds is.

Doug Deal July 4, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Bah, that should have been Monds.

B Balz July 4, 2009 at 9:31 am

Sir, I disagree with what you say, but shall fight to death for your right to say it. (;>).

Jeff July 5, 2009 at 4:44 am

Actually, in my original comment that mentioned Monds, it was nothing more than a passing reference that while I think Scott is the best the GOP has, Monds is the best candidate overall. The entire rest of that comment was directly about Scott.
