Mike Evans, now a Congressional candidate, just sent out a press release calling on Nancy Pelosi to step down.

Wonder how many others will get in on the fun.

If that’s his method of lobbying the taxpayers of Forsyth County should demand their money back.

Prove It May 21, 2009 at 10:48 am

Long before Chris began “helping” the conservative cause by sitting at a desk and posting angry rants online after attending Trek conventions, a guy named Mike Evans was the Caucus Chair of the Republican caucus in the House. He recruited candidates, ran the campaign efforts, and led the floor fights against the Democrats in the House like Murphy and his ilk. he was in the trenches fighting with guys like Westmoreland, Irvin, Ehrhart, and others.

If you spent a little less time looking at porn or your facebook page and a little more time looking at voting records, you will find that as a Republican leader in the House Mike had a stellar conservative voting record. He didn’t cave to the powerful for some scraps of pork. He stood up and fought.

Carp all you want about inside baseball nonsense, but when the voters get done with this race, they’ll see they have one candidate who has the proven voting record.

Icarus May 21, 2009 at 10:52 am

He also seems to have a stellar record of cashing in with lucrative state positions, friendly zoning/EPD rulings, and lobbying contracts with government entities as a result of his “record”.

I hope the voters of the 9th are looking for someone who can help reform our party and reform D.C., not someone looking to get a bigger network of insiders that he can cash in on.

Prove It May 21, 2009 at 10:57 am

One other point.

Graves supported Evans for re-election to the DOT board (he claims) because Mike was a change agent. Mike was pushing for real reform of DOT. He was trying to clean up the mess. Assuming that was graves’ motivation, Graves did the right thing and should be commended. But that also proves the point that Mike was the good guy here trying to clean up the mess at DOT.

Now the truth of the matter, and one that us House guys know, is that Graves was trying to cut a deal with the Speaker the whole time. Mike is very well respected by local leaders in Gordon and Pickens county and they were pushing Graves hard to back Mike. Graves was trying to cut deals for committee appointments and a leadership position in exchange for the vote. The Speaker said no. So Graves went along with his local officials. Hardly a principled stand.

The hero worship on here is disgusting. But it’s also illogical.

Graves either did the right thing and supported a strong conservative change agent – thus Mike deserves credit for what he was trying to do at DOT.

Or Graves was just a clumsy, amateurish politician who got squeezed.

Either way, it’s not all that Chris and his ilk make it out to be.

Prove It May 21, 2009 at 11:02 am

lucrative?

state reps make $17k a year. DOT board members make nothing. how in the hell is that lucrative?

friendly zonings. that’s a ridiculous position to take. you want to go down the laundry list of legislators who have some kind of real estate investments? for starters let me help…tom graves.

And just so I’m clear…since this will impact a lot of races this year….any person who has ever registered to lobby is automatically not qualified to serve in office as a Republican?

Icarus May 21, 2009 at 11:22 am

Graves supported someone who thought he was a change agent, who instead chose to piss away two years worth of gold-dome political capital used to get him on that board.

As for the lucrative part, I’m refering to a land deal for a Wal-Mart that Evans spearheaded in Forsyth County, if my memory serves. I seem to remember a clip of the Channel 5 I-Team walking through a creek 3-4 feet deep that EPD was over-ruled via politcal channels to determine it was a “dry stream” . If my memory is wrong, I’ll apologize profusely. But this is where I’m coming from.

As for lobbying, I would think anyone currently getting paid by a county he wants to represent in Congress to lobby for him should be disqualified.

Prove It May 21, 2009 at 11:31 am

you left out the part that a single man and woman fell in love, did the right thing and stepped down, and then got married. if you think that voters are going to hold it against a man that he fell in love and some politicians under the gold dome got their feelings hurt, you’re out of your freakin mind.

A change agent he was and still is. no one can legitimately criticize the work mike was doing in his role on DOT. if graves and company want to attack a man’s wife or his marriage. go for it. see how far that gets you in north Georgia.

didn’t the I-team retract part of that story because they actually showed themselves walking through a stream that wasn’t on the property? get your facts straight before lobbing accusations you cant back up.

lobbying. what an amazingly convenient and narrow definition. I’ll wager right now that you can send 10 mail pieces into forsyth county saying mike evans has a consulting contract with the county to help secure more road funding and road projects and not only will he win the county but his vote total will be higher.

good luck with all that.

provisional May 21, 2009 at 11:46 am

Maybe Evans can sign on to be a “consultatnt” to Pelosi. He has experience in “stepping down” from an office and trying to spin it where he looks like a noble person.

LoyaltyIsMyHonor May 21, 2009 at 11:51 am

Oh joy, another pissing contest….

Chris May 21, 2009 at 11:59 am

Wow, I’ve made a new friend.

Icarus May 21, 2009 at 12:01 pm

“Wow, I’ve made a new friend.”

That’s a real accomplishment for a Trekkie, I hear.

GOPGeorgia May 21, 2009 at 12:09 pm

Prove it, are you a legislator? It’s not a question I would normally ask, but it seems that you imply that you are….

“and one that us House guys know”

I would be very surprised if any GOP nominee from the Ninth would vote for Madam Speaker.

Buzz Brockway May 21, 2009 at 12:31 pm

Prove It,

I wouldn’t think you’d want to have a discussion of the Evans – Abraham romance time line. It doesn’t exactly make your candidate look very good.

Sure, Evans was once a pretty good legislator. They key word is “once.” Evans political career is a cautionary tale (and sadly a metaphor for the GOP as a whole): He “once” was a good legislator who descended into selfishness. So much so that he betrayed the people who fought, and in some cases suffered retribution, to keep him on the DOT board.

I don’t live in the 9th district so it doesn’t much matter what I think, but if Mike Evans gets more than two votes, it will be more than he deserves.

Prove It May 21, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Buzz, good lord, man, are you really that cold?

you guys have some really whacked out priorities when you think some silly DOT position and ridiculous gold dome politics is more important than love and marriage.

as previously stated, graves is no purist. and all of you conveniently ignore that it’s the House leadership that started and perpetuated this whole mess at DOT so they could run it as a slush fund.

Bill Simon May 21, 2009 at 12:49 pm

Icarus,

He also seems to have a stellar record of cashing in with lucrative state positions, friendly zoning/EPD rulings, and lobbying contracts with government entities as a result of his “record”.

Man, you’re such a naive SOB. Every single one of YOUR heroes in the House and Senate works the system in any way they can to get, hopefully, “lucrative contracts” (i.e., money-making enough to pay bills).

Icarus May 21, 2009 at 12:53 pm

Yes, Bill. I am naive. I keep waiting for you to invite me to work on a campaign, let me peek into your experience world of “legwork” and “research”, and learn all that there is to know.

Bill Simon May 21, 2009 at 12:56 pm

You are naive as to the whiny little crap like accusing anyone of obtaining “lucrative”contracts.

Seriously, you and Farris should fly to Vermont for a wedding. You’re kindred spirits.

Icarus May 21, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Farris is married. And in case you missed what I wrote yesterday, I think there’s already too much adultery in Georgia Politics.

YossarianLives May 21, 2009 at 1:07 pm

Congrats to Mike Evans for pointing out the obvious. Just the kind of person the 9th really wants.

Kellie May 21, 2009 at 1:12 pm

I live in the 9th and I happy there are so many willing to step forward to take the abuse. ;-)

Buzz Brockway May 21, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Prove It,

I have no problem with people falling in love, I’ve done it myself. However, to fall in love with a person you are hiring for an important government position presents an ethical problem. That may not be a big deal to an Evans sycophantic like yourself but it is a big deal to the rest of us.

Jeremy Jones May 21, 2009 at 2:22 pm

I agree with the earlier statement, I doubt any candidate will agree with Pelosi. That is a fight that needs to be fought during the primary, unless there is a candidate who thinks she is great, I see no reason to even bring it up.

I hope she does resign, step down, quit, or whatever you want to call it, but the bottom line is, she the Speaker of the House, the House needs to be calling for removal, not us. I would hope Deal will soon sign or start a petition to have a recall vote on the House leader.

John Konop May 21, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Prove It

Do you think anyone reading this thread would now vote for Mike Evans? If you work for Mike he should beg you to stop.

Prove It May 21, 2009 at 2:46 pm

Actually John, i’m surprised this thread has turned into the always relevant discussion of getting back to the gold standard or some other silliness yall argue about all the time.

i check in from time to time and generally find myself amused by the ridiculousness. but i’m not going to stand by while a bunch of goobs trash a good Republican and elevate a mediocre at best state rep to the status of a saint.

John Konop May 21, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Prove It

If you had listened to me a few years ago your 401k might be looking better. But hey maybe you do not care about the economy, savings, wages….

Prove It May 21, 2009 at 2:52 pm

actually, my 401k is doing just fine, and all without listening to self important windbags like you. its amazing. a miracle. tom graves must be responsible.

John Konop May 21, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Prove It

Since you are such an expert on economics can you answer a few questions about your candidate?

Since entitlement cost is a major part of the budget can you in detail tell us your candidate’s solution and how we pay for it?

Can you explain how we pay for Iraq and Afghanistan while balancing the budget?

Was your candidate for or against the Tarp and if not what would he have done?

John Konop May 21, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Prove It

What did you invest in and how much did it grow over the last few years? Can you prove it? The difference between you and I is I am not hiding behind anything and I was very public about my opinion via the economy.

RuralDem May 21, 2009 at 3:03 pm

Oh, the irony.

John Konop May 21, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Prove It

The only thing you proved is you are full of hot air!

I Am Jacks Post May 21, 2009 at 3:36 pm

Can’t we call a truce, hug it out, and get back to making fun of Kingston?

Icarus May 21, 2009 at 3:38 pm

Kingston?

Did you miss the memo? That’s so 2008.

Ox is the new Jack.

GOPGeorgia May 21, 2009 at 3:41 pm

I will try repeating the question for any who are slow:

Prove it, are you a legislator? It’s not a question I would normally ask, but it seems that you imply that you are….

“and one that us House guys know”

Maurice Atkinson May 25, 2009 at 5:01 pm

“”"”"”"”"”" i’m not going to stand by while a bunch of goobs trash a good Republican and elevate a mediocre at best state rep to the status of a saint.”"”"”"”"

Prove It, but isn’t that what politics is all about????? You show me one corner of this planet that doesn’t do precisely that and I’ll give you a months wages.

Some of us know Tom Graves and simply support him because we feel he would do a tremendous job for his district and represent Georgia well.

My ADD self doesn’t read the Pundit posts meticulously, but generally give it a cursory glance. After reading the thread as seeing posts that remind me of some of my Prozac moments, I can only say lighten up. If Rep. Graves is as evil as you portray, I’m sure those issues will be flushed out. You might want consider finding another appropriate way to present them. Rapid fire posts generally won’t do the trick.

Rpolitic May 25, 2009 at 7:35 pm

Not sure who you are prove it but you are being as selective about Mike’s history as you are about Tom’s. Maybe you are “newer” to the house then some of the rest of the folks on here, maybe you like revisionist history, what ever the case may be. Be careful what you want to dig up in the past of legislators. Never saw anyone say Graves or any of the other candidates were pure and I can assure Mike is not either.

The problem you have is you don’t want to stay with the current facts. Mike signed a contract to do some advising and lobbying for a county. The county expects him to be able to deliver for what ever reason. If your goal is to be successful in lobbying one of the first things that you shouldn’t do is start off with blasting the speaker of the body where you will need at least a tacit approval. That was where this thread began and where you should go back to it is much safer for you and your candidate.
