Where do the GOP candidates stand? Do they have the guts to speak out against secession? What kind of leader are they? Will they pander to the fringe, or will they be patriots?
He’s trying to get traction for his campaign in a Democrat primary. It’s really not a bad move on his part and a good ad, although I think it’s completely disingenuous. Everybody is talking about Barnes and Baker, so Poythress desperately needs attention.
States do not have the right to Secede… period.
Texas v. White – In accepting jurisdiction, the court ruled that Texas had remained a state ever since it first joined the Union, despite its joining the Confederate States of America and its being under military rule at the time of the decision in the case. In deciding the merits of the bond issue, the court further held that the Constitution did not permit states to secede from the United States, and that the ordinances of secession, and all the acts of the legislatures within seceding states intended to give effect to such ordinances, were “absolutely null”.

Red and McBerry have a very valid point.
The Fed and Treasury have now committed to emergency measures that are 29% of GDP. In the Great Depression the Keynesian measures only came to 8% of GDP.
In recent months the Fed has created $trillions out of nothing. Just yesterday, they announced intentions to have the Fed “purchase” another $trillion or so Treasuries as the MARKET is no longer willing to accept US debt at confiscatory prices ,ergo woeful interest rates.
For all of the hullabaloo over the FairTax because of government theft through taxation, this is GRAND THEFT of the life savings of those who didn’t speculate and it is grand theft of the value of wages.
Senator Sanders of Vermont demanded to know where this money is going. The Fed refused to answer. More recently Rep. Allan Grayson exposed the Fed Inspector General as being utterly incompetent, for she could not answer that question, nor had she looked into the $TRILLIONS SPENT! Bloomberg Finance is suing to find out but they are getting nowhere.
The Fed has violated its own charter and US Constitution repeatedly in more ways than can be recounted here.
The economic security, property, savings, and future income of every American are being decimated by the unconstitutional and illegal acts of agencies fronting for Ponzi-scheme operators, crooks, and traitors who should be hanged instead of being bailed out.
The federal government is now a collective of fascists that seizes property without compensation, allows private interests to create money, decimates responsible citizens, and attacks the Second Amendment.
These excesses are tearing the USA apart.
No system this corrupt has a PRAYER – IRONY INTENDED – of surviving, no matter how many apologists like Poythress pretend otherwise.
Going back to the Constitution and sound finance is our only hope.
Threatening secession is drastic, all right. But the imbalances are even more extreme.

We did not get into this situation overnight. The main reason I think we can work our way out is China and other countries are holding great deal of our currency and debt.
Anyone in lending knows if the person owes you too much money they do have leverage. The real question is how we use the leverage to get out of this mess.
Spending
We must cut back of being the policemen of the world because the truth is we cannot afford it.
We most attack entitlements by using a formula based on life expectancy. Also all must pay into the healthcare system that delivers a basic product via nurses at places like drug stores. We also must stop spending over 70% of healthcare dollars at the last 6 months of a life. If a person has the extra money it should come out of pocket or separate insurance policy.
Trade
We must start producing more and buying less. You cannot run an economy based on consumption and declining production.
Taxes
We must go back to a Pay/Go system. Also we should raise fees and lower taxes on non essential services.
This is just a small start, but this should be the focus of the discussion not secession.
Actually John, I strongly support a gold standard, but I have all along been quick to admit that I don’t really know how to get there from here. The system as it is is such a mess it is not an easy fix. I’m not good on the nitty gritty of economics. I’m better on conservative dogma which is what I try to stick to.
My point has always been that sound money is the unequivocally conservative position. If free coinage of silver was considered radically rash and inflationary a mere 100 years ago, supporting Fed monopoly money cannot possibly be conservative today. Now how to get there from here will take wiser men than me to figure out.

UGALiberal, one court case settles nothing. What matters is the original intent of the Founders when they drafted the Constitution and what the States thought they were getting when they ratified it. Not all the Founders supported a “loose compact” (for lack of a better term). Some of the more nationalistic clearly did not. But that is what they got anyway. That was the end result of the Constitutional Convention, and as importantly that is what the States thought they were getting. The Constitution would not have passed otherwise. Plus, three States expressly withheld the right to secede in their ratifying documents. From an objective historical standard, this is really a slam dunk. Sorry to burst your bubble.

No GOP candidate has called for secession, so the ad, placing all 4 of the candidates in the background, is just a lie. The whole secessionist movement is just a figment of Bill Shipp’s “Barne’s Worshipping” mind.
McBerry has probably come closest on the rhetoric and Ox, being his pandering self, probably implied he was for it when speaking to the flaggers.

I do appreciate your honesty. The truth is we covered up the lack of production and over spending by letting leverage rate go from 8 to 1 to up to 50 to 1. We now have the opposite problem with leverage swinging to hard the other way. For example without leverage your house is worth less via less buyer being able to buy it. And if the price of products drops people make less and or get laid off because less money for the employer to pay out or keep people employed.
That is why we must start producing more and buying less from overseas. Also we must cut back on government spending because it is crowding out the private sector. Also what we do spend must be focused on smart project that throw off revenue like an updated electrical grid system vs. wasted spending like the war on drugs.

NY, RI, and VA all explicitly withheld the right to leave in their ratification documents. This is a well known fact of the historical record.
OK, one “fringe Republican candidate who did indeed rant about secession but General Proythess generally lied about the other three candidates and if lying about your opponents is what passes for “powerful” in the Dem party (and I suspect it does), I can see why this video may excite some. But it is dishonest and unworthy of anyone who wears the uniform of the United States Army.
I certainly agree with the point the General makes that calling for secession is on its face anti-American and un-Republican. Frankly frankly the very defintion of RINO would have to be someone who associates themselves with the party of Lincoln and in the same breath talks about secession. Unfortunately, the general so obviously lied about the positions of the candidates he is attacking that he calls his own honor and integrity into question.
That said, I do believe that if you want to talk about secession and if that Lee Greenwood song the GOP always plays at every gathering makes your teeth hurt because your really aren’t all that “proud to be an American” then you probably should disassociate yourself from the Party of Lincoln and go back to the party in which you would clearly be more comfortable – the Dixiecrats.

What was that 150 yr old quote about conservatism? That they do NOTHING ‘conservative’ and are simply ‘slower than the Progressives’… still sounds all too true…

Texas Gov. Rick Perry fired up an anti-tax “tea party” Wednesday with his stance against the federal government and for states’ rights as some in his U.S. flag-waving audience shouted, “Secede!”
An animated Perry told the crowd at Austin City Hall — one of three tea parties he was attending across the state — that officials in Washington have abandoned the country’s founding principles of limited government. He said the federal government is strangling Americans with taxation, spending and debt.
Perry repeated his running theme that Texas’ economy is in relatively good shape compared with other states and with the “federal budget mess.” Many in the crowd held signs deriding President Barack Obama and the $786 billion federal economic stimulus package.
Perry called his supporters patriots. Later, answering news reporters’ questions, Perry suggested Texans might at some point get so fed up they would want to secede from the union, though he said he sees no reason why Texas should do that.
“There’s a lot of different scenarios,” Perry said. “We’ve got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we’re a pretty independent lot to boot.”

Taxes, Tea Parties, and Constitutional Principles

ATLANTA (April 17, 2009) – Thousands of discontented Georgians lined the streets around our state Capitol this week to protest excessive Washington spending and an increasingly burdensome tax code. In response to a federal government that thinks it knows how to spend your money better than you do, and continues to grow nearly unchecked, the Georgia Senate voted to reaffirm our rights as a sovereign state to prevent the federal government from continuing to expand.
As a country governed by a written Constitution, the right to keep government in check is vested in We the people. That means that we, the people of this country, cannot be forced to accept an oppressive and intrusive federal government. Under Senate Resolution 632, the Georgia Senate expressed bipartisan support for the principles of Jeffersonian democracy.
This resolution has been severely misrepresented in the media. In his AJC editorial, Georgia Senate endorses radical idea (April 16, 2009), Jay Bookman tries to play constitutionalist by expressing views that are disingenuous for the sole purpose of provoking fear. He argues that the resolution will likely lead to Georgia to secede from and disband the United States. This extreme view is a loose interpretation of the measure’s language. Most of the text of the resolution is based on the words of those two well-known “extremists,” Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in the Kentucky Resolution of 1798.
The idea of limited government and state sovereignty is far from a radical idea—it is common sense and the basis of our Constitution. The assumption that dangerous criminals would be set free under this resolution is utterly false. The language in the resolution related to crimes, drafted by Thomas Jefferson, was drafted well before subsequent amendments to the Constitution expanding Congress’ authority in certain areas. This resolution is designed to reinforce the principle of limited government that protects all of us from an ever-expanding federal government.
Under the Constitution, the federal government is given a clear purpose: to protect the safety and rights of its people. When that government oversteps its bounds, citizens have every responsibility to bring the federal government back to its foundation principles. This can occur through elections and judicial opinions. But the Georgia Senate decided to weigh in on a national movement to return to the original meaning of the Tenth Amendment, which states, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” Our founding fathers included this Constitutional guarantee because they knew only too well that a small, limited government works best. These principles affirm that states did not unite under the practice of unlimited submission to their federal government.
The resolution includes a list of items that demonstrate what the Senate considers federal overreaching. Most Georgians would agree with most of the list, which includes the federal government establishing martial law, limiting political speech or the press, or limiting the right to keep and bear arms.
Georgia is just one of many states involved in a movement to limit the continuing growth of the federal government. Over thirty other states are introducing sovereignty resolutions of their own, many with bipartisan support, and our Georgia congressional delegation has also done an excellent job of working to limit the growth of federal spending and taxes. Additionally, such nationally known groups as the Heritage Foundation and the American Legislative Exchange Council support these principles.
We must ensure that government continues to work for the people, not the other way around. American citizens are not willing to let their government dictate every area of their lives, a fact made evident by the thousands who gathered in Atlanta for one of the biggest anti-tax rallies this country has seen since the Boston Tea Party more than 235 years ago.
As Washington continues to add to the more than $11 trillion our country already owes, it is apparent that the federal government is having a hard enough time managing its own affairs and should not meddle in that of the states. It is time to bring back common sense and put an end to the runaway growth of government. SR 632 is a reaffirmation of the principles of our nation’s founders.

This blame the media stuff from OX is getting old. OX clearly referenced Governor Perry as an example of his vision of states rights. Perry promoted the idea while a crowd was yelling secede! What would any rational person think?
I disagree with the solutions Ray has put forward on this issue but I will give him and his supporters’ credit for being honest about their position. As I said I have known Ray for awhile and agree he has indentified some issues we should be concerned about and even though I disagree with him on solutions from what I have seen he has always been honest about his views

By sledgehammering the rights of states, its citizens, its finances, and stealing -yes that is the operative word – from everyone on the planet, this government can only through repressive force. The only question remaining is whether US armed forces will fire upon the people.

I’d sure like to see some proof that these folks advocate secession. If not, somebody is really dumbing down his game plan. And if that’s the case, if he can’t back it up, then Poythress should be ashamed. As far as secession goes, I think it’s mentioned for shock value by the fringes on both sides for different reasons. Also there’s a certain school of thought by us “tinfoil hat” types who view secession/balkanization/ragionalism as an actual tool of the globalists.
Some folks advocate “States Rights” and regionalism/localism/individualism as common sense. Also this whole “Red States vs. Blue States” seems a little “artificially induced”.
Just look at all the crazy maps for “regional government” what a sick joke. No thanks.

When the Founders established Freedom of the Press one that makes a Gazillion FRN’s was not what they envisioned.
