He won’t run for Lt. Governor:
Today I am fully suspending my campaign for Lieutenant Governor with the intention of seeking re-election to the State Senate.
I will always be grateful to those who have so generously supported my candidacy. I am especially proud of the endorsements from my colleagues in the Georgia General Assembly and our strong showing in the various Republican straw polls.
I was relieved to learn that the Lieutenant Governor’s surgery went well and that his doctors are optimistic about his ability to actively campaign for re-election. He has been a friend for many years, and I wish him a speedy return to full health.
I would not have entered the race had it not been an open seat, and there is no point in remaining in it as long as the Lieutenant Governor is well enough to be a candidate for re-election.
Public service is, by definition, about serving others, not the positions or titles that we want for ourselves.
Dr. Bill Sheals and Matt Reeves have agreed to serve as honorary co-chairs of my re-election campaign.
Not very surprised at this, but we sure better hope Cagle is healthy enough to campaign for Lt. Gov.
BTW, Dr. Sheals and Matt Reeves were two of the people who were planning on running for Shafer’s Senate seat.

Daniel — I do not understand why any libertarian would vote for Johnson. He is the king of pork. He sponsored legislation to regulate professional wrestling as a sport and to punish consensual oral sex between teenagers with 10 year prison sentences. He also backed the Georgia Power bill and opposed Sunday sales.

I do not deny it was a rumor, but it is all over place. As I said I have no issue with Casey, yet you do know what I am saying is the truth. And you are right I have heard nothing from any person associated with his campaign. But if it is not true than why are so many people talking about it?

We all know you are the one that likes to attack.
You have no idea what freedom is. You don’t even think I should be able to ask Ox a simple question. Get over yourself!
Kellie/Grit,
The threadjack has been re-directed. Grit now has his own thread. Please move this discussion there.

I would not vote for Johnson. I met him last month and he’s not to impressive.
JK,
You would need to ask those that are talking about it that question. My guess would be one of a number of reasons including the need to act like they are a true player and have somthing of substance to say about Ga.Politics, as off base as it is. Or it could be that a group of people wish it were true and rather than be honest brokers they deal in rumors and gossip, because they know he is going to be re-elected as LG.Whatever the reason trust me he is running and the next time someone tells you he isnt ask them the basis of that comment, and I think you will find an answer similiar to yours………
Judge – I am with you on that.
I would make a large bet Cagle stays in the race. There is no reason for him not to. Even if Johnson and Shafer had stayed in I bet he would have still run and won.
Konop – are you seriously justifying a rumor as truth because it has reached a certain critical mass? Thats comical. Read your last post just one more time.

As I said numerous times I like Casey and I have never taken a swipe at him. And you are right I have heard the rumor from numerous people in party leadership who will not go on the record and or claim they heard it from somebody else.
The only reason I am giving at any validity is it was from people who supported and like Casey. I could be wrong about the their motivations but it is usually not an attack on Casey and more how they do not want the party put in a tough situations if he pulls out in the last minute.
As you guys know I have been very outspoken about the nasty attacks used by different campaigns during this primary season. And I have pushed all to focus on issues verse nasty personal attacks.
I am a Cagle supporter and had agreed to support David Shafer for LG. I am sure there are many others like me; we wanted CC to be our governor, and David to be LG.
As a result of the circumstances, I’ve had a few conversations with David Shafer over the past couple of weeks. What I will say is that my respect for him has increased tenfold. Unlike Eric Johnson, David Shafer never once bad-mouthed Cagle or anyone else. I am sure that the events of the past 3 weeks have been a huge personal disappointment to him, as they would have been to anyone. It would have been very easy for him to perpetuate the garbage that is going around, all in the interest of his own personal gain.
But David Shafer has shown us all that he is less about self interest, and more about service to a party and loyalty to a friend. How refreshing is that??
You know, maybe there isn’t any big story behind his decision at all. Maybe it was just because David Shafer is a class act.
Shafer will still be a leader in the Senate and by showing such class, he may be even more effective than if he had stayed in and won the LG race. Maybe he’d consider running against Isakson?
We need Shafer to stay right where he is for the day when John Linder decides not to run again and Balfour thinks he’s qualified for Congress…and have Shafer smack down Balfour.
“Maybe he’d consider running against Isakson?”
That would be a “no”. Shafer doesn’t do suicide missions.
Say it aint so, David showed class by stepping aside and not ripping the party apart. If you rip him for not winning the State Chairmans race or bills or policy. I can say this David gave his heart in the race,
I remember Ralph having to throw the kitchen sink and the fridge in at the last second. David stood by my father when others buried him in mud before the primary. David has more honor in one finger then some House Reps and State Senators have in there bodies, I will back David in whatever he does and wish David the best.
I know its suicide, but I can dream. And I happen to agree with Bill’s idea way more, I’d love to see Shafer take Linder’s place when he is ready to retire.
“Maybe it was just because David Shafer is a class act.”
David Shafer is a class act. A quality not often found in Georgia Politics.
“We need Shafer to stay right where he is for the day when John Linder decides not to run again and Balfour thinks he’s qualified for Congress…and have Shafer smack down Balfour.”
Amen, Bill. Preach it, brutha. I’m in the choir on this one.
What is the scheduled date for the “bowing” out of Cagle and the “bowing” back-in of Shafer?
It’s like watching a shell game… the only guarantee is the player ( in this case, the people) are going to lose.
At least there is some entertainment value. Enjoy the show.
Daniel, I don’t think it’s been scheduled yet. But keep checking your Twitter feed, there’s still a year to go before qualifying.
