From a press release I just received:
Karen Handel has officially filed the necessary paperwork to form a campaign committee to seek the office of Governor of Georgia in 2010.
Handel said, “After prayerful consideration and with the support of my husband Steve, I have decided to run for Governor. I am humbled by the level of support I am receiving from all across Georgia and I’m looking forward to the campaign.
“Our next Governor will face many difficult challenges. I look forward to meeting those challenges with exciting new ideas and a vision that will put us on the path to growth and prosperity.”
Handel also announced that Fred Cooper will serve as Campaign Chairman. “Fred Cooper is recognized as one of the great leaders of the Republican Party and in the Georgia business community. I am fortunate to consider him a great friend and I am honored to have him as chairman of our campaign,” Handel said.
Cooper said, “Karen Handel possesses the qualities that are so important in public service – absolute integrity, exceptional experience, remarkable intelligence, and strong, fair leadership. She has consistently demonstrated those qualities….as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor; as Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners; and as Secretary of State.
“She is ready to be Governor; she will be an excellent Governor; I am proud to be on her team,” Cooper added.

“wasn’t there some kind wwf wrestler on the school board up there too??”
Rick Steiner in fact was a school board member in Cherokee County, and disqualified from running during his election period because he didn’t use his given name, and instead put his wrestling name or something on the ballot, or paperwork one. Surely it was an innocent mistake. Woulda made a great member and roll model for the kids, as he is a pretty nice guy. oh well…..there goes the neighborhhood……
KSU
I guess all I am saying is that there is not a soul on this board who can give me any solid evidence as to how Handel or Oxendine would handle many policy issues. As I stated earlier there is no paper trail for these two. Call me old fashion, but I just like to see evidence instead of hearing words.
So, you basically make firm decisions based on inadequate information? I kinda remember you from a year or so ago, actually. You haven’t…evolved too well in a year, you know that? It’s like you’re permanently stuck in Stupidville. And, you appear to be quite happy there.
Please, stop your incessant, cry-baby whining and come back when you actually have something semi-intelligent to add.
DrJay,
<ijust curious what the deal was there–didn’t he resign sparking the special election that put handel in an elected office in the irst place–and the guy in effingham that got elected lasy being a former football player too–just got me thnking about it that’s all–wasn’t there some kind wwf wrestler on the school board up there too??
Dude, I don’t know if there was a WWF wrestler, or a WTF wrestler on any school board….and, I’m not sure what “up there” means…does it mean Cobb, Fulton, Atlanta, DeKalb…whole lotta possibilities for “up there”..
John Konop,
My premise is that social conservatives tend to be better fiscal conservatives than social moderates. For every Delay who dropped the ball, there is a Olympia Snow, Susan Collins, or Arlen Specter who I have a tough time finding any ounce of conservatism fiscal or Social. I remember in the early 90’s moderate Republicans campaigned against conservative Republicans by saying that they could better deliver state funds because unlike the conservatives they were willing to vote for the Democrat Budgets. Religious right conservatives refused to vote for the budget for moral as well as fiscal grounds. I remember working in a campaign against Paul Heard in 1994. He was an upstanding pro-business State Rep who represented Fayette County for more than 10 years. The issue we used against him was that only once did he vote against Tom Murphy’s fiscally and socially irresponsible budget. Paul thought he was a conservative, but his record proved he was wrong.

I agree with Jane above that I feel Gays should have rights but no more than heteros do. Further, I feel that gay marriage is wrong and that gay couples should not be treated as husband and wife.
My arguement about Handel was that she appeared to have pandered for the Gay vote as she ran for Fulton County Commissioner.
Jane also brings up another intersting question: Do you think that she will shake Handel’s hand at a Gay Pride parade now that she is running for Governor of a Red State instead of Chairman of the County Commission in a Blue County? I sincerely doubt it as it is not politically expedient to do so.
Further, John, I don’t feel that this is “hate spewing spin.” It is a legitimate question that happened to be about Gays. It could have just as easily been about the NEA or any other group that was pandered for votes. (And NO, I am not saying that Handel pandered the NEA, I used it as an example.)
Interesting. I think Jane and I have worked together before. And maybe against each other before, too.

Do you think all gay people are Democrats? Have you ever heard of the Log Cabin Republicans? Do you think if a candidate asks for a vote from a gay person that automatically disqualifies them?
The sworn responsibility is that the Governor serves all the people. And gay people have legal rights as well as straight people. Also gay people deserve to be heard as well as straight people. Any candidate that would refuse to meet with gay people to at least hear their issues is not someone I would respect nor vote for.
I personally do not support gay marriage but believe gay people deserve legal protection straight people have as couples ie civil unions. And when I ran for office I had a civil debate with a member of the Log Cabin Republicans about this issue. We also talked about many other issues we agreed on and disagreed on, but at the end I did ask for his support.
It is mind boggling that you would not support any candidates that ask for support from a gay person. If you read or understood your bible you would know this was opposite of what Jesus taught.
John,
What in any of my statements makes you think I am a Neanderthal? You are COMPLETELY missing the point. She asked for their support, spoke to their magazine, and then dismissed the magazine as not relevant when it sutied her purpose.
Yes, I’ve heard of the Log Cabin Republicans. However, I sincerely doubt that Gay Republicans make up a huge constituency outside of Fulton County and the Greater Metro area. That does not mean that they do not have rights nor should they be discounted.
It also doesn’t mean that they should be disrespected by politicians who want to use them to get elected to one position and ignore them to get to another.
Again, I never said that a candidate shouldn’t meet and respect a Gay person’s opinions. I said that her 2003 interview sounded too liberal for me.
For someone who has said that they didn’t want to pick a fight you have a funny way of showing it. You’ve called me a facsist, that I’m the type of person that Jesus warned others about, and that I don’t understand what Jesus taught.
You are sounding like the type of person Jesus was speaking about when he said, “Let those without sin cast the first stone.”
For the record, homosexuality is a sin. Adultery is a sin. Murder is a sin. Jesus would not have condoned the actions but would have loved the sinner. THAT is what Jesus taught and if YOU understood the Bible you would know that. (You would also know to capitalize Bible.)
True Grit
You are talking in circles. You claim you support gay people having a voice yet you claim you do not support them having “an open door and a seat at the table”…..
Please help me understand how you are not full of contradictions.
I do not support the gay lifestyle. I do not support their marriages. I do support the fact that they have a voice. I just do not think that they should have more of a voice than anyone else. The tone of her interview was slanted liberal.
The contradictions once again come from Handel. She said in 2003 that she would give them a voice and then when running for SOS that the very magazine she gave an interview with was not credible and she dissavowed it.
True Grit
Please show me any comment from Karen that said gay people “should have more of a voice than anyone else”? Anyone can see you are trying to smearing Karen. And if this is what OX plans on doing to win he will not have my support.
This hate spewing style of campaigning is part of the reason the GOP has lost the young vote and independents.
It’s not smearing. And there is no hate. The hate seams to continue to spew from you, sir.
I find it interesting that you continue to avoid the basic point that I’ve made, but continue to tell me that I’m a hate filled campaigner.
Why don’t you go here and read what Southern Voice has to say about her:

True Grit
The truth is the GOP is in trouble because to many like you want to make issues out of garbage like this instead of focusing on real issues like, education, transportation, zero based budgeting……
The irony is many of you are the self-righteous that Jesus warned about!
Georgia witnessed this campaign on a statewide strategy when Handel ran for SOS successfully. Smear tactics of Gays, Log Cabin Republicans, the Southern Voice reports, accusations of pandering, no experience or lack of experience and education.
I know what’s coming next, if the smears hold the pattern to the SOS race, childless, possibly a lesbian, adopting pets instead of children and on and on. Except with a new twist, only Social Conservatives are fiscal conservatives.
It backfired then, and it’s starting to p-ss me off.
I haven’t decided to jump in yet, but keep it up.
I love how the unmovable radical that I am can support of and be critical of Karen Handel in the same blog. Karen’s willingness to reach out to the Gay community in Atlanta is welcome especially if she does not pander to them or they are significant base of support in Fulton County. Questions might be raised by some of her political alliances, but the answers are more likely to be acceptable to the majority of Republicans than not. A number of very hard right Social Conservatives women supported her, like I did, for SOS because for that job she was the best candidate. Now, for Governor, the calculus has changed and we will have to see.
Again with the warnings, John? I’m sure Jesus appreciates you invoking his name everytime you have to back up and punt.
The GOP is not in trouble and will come back very well thanks to the incompetence of Barack and the idiots in Congress.
If you would like to read up on the issues you talked about help yourself. Go to http://www.johnoxendine.com . For some reason Handel and Cagle don’t have anything about issues on their respective websites.
This converstation is over as you continue to get personal and call names or offer warnings, but not once address why Handel was so eager to get the endorsement of the Log Cabin Republicans and other gays yet turned her back on them during the SOS campaign.
Well said Jane.
Take lessons John. No name calling.
Bill I chose to ignore you awhile ago. I actually think that you are rather smart, but your arrogance and snideness is your undoing. You can say whatever…again I have read your blogs and read your post and unfortunately the conceit that you have for yourself is not measurable compared to the quality of your work. Learn to be a little bit more humble, and maybe I will take you seriously. Also whether you remember it or not, after our first debate on here we agreed on some things. During that time you didn’t act like you were in the third grade calling me names and what not. Lesson is learned…don’t disagree with Bill Simon or else he will resort to playground tactics.
And what do you mean inadequate information…. I hope this website has some adequate information.
Here is the link.

Very good post all should read!
Gees John……Do you think Jesus is getting sick of you invoking His name everytime you have to back up and punt?
The name calling and inference that I’m a hypocrite is getting old.
And if you would like to look at the issues you’re talking about, go to http://www.Johnoxendine.com . Somehow Handel and Cagle have left issues off of their respective websites.
KSU,
Lesson is learned…don’t disagree with Bill Simon or else he will resort to playground tactics.
It’s not a matter of “disagreeing” with me. It’s a matter of writing with no purpose. Like, this gem of yours: “I guess all I am saying is that there is not a soul on this board who can give me any solid evidence as to how Handel or Oxendine would handle many policy issues. As I stated earlier there is no paper trail for these two. Call me old fashion, but I just like to see evidence instead of hearing words.”
The only way one could communicate on THIS board is to do it with “words.” But, you state “Call me old fashion, but I just like to see evidence instead of hearing words.”
As I said, you write but have no point to your writing except to incesantly whine about not having enough “evidence” that’s not…just….”words” …you read on a blog…..
If KSU wants “evidence” on Ox, go to his website. Unlike Cagle and Handel, Ox actually has something in writing about what his agenda will be as Governor.
http://www.johnoxendine.com/
If KSU want’s evidence on how Ox would handle issues, go to his website. Unlike Cagle and Handel, Ox has put his positions in writing.
But, Gritty, KSU doesn’t like to read these things called “words”…he wants “evidence.”
Bill
True Grit is a fiscal liberal check it out!
True Grit is advocating that tax payers’ subsidized government owned entertainment in competition with business people who put up hard earned money and time.

Gosh John……Sticks and stones may break my bones….
The hotel/motel tax for Bibb County is NOT….I repeat….NOT a liberal tax , nor is the 2-way split between the Georgia Sports and Music Halls of Fame . If it were Senator Staton wouldn’t be behind it nor would Representatives Peake and Sellier. It is a necessary evil to keep the halls in our community.
True Grit
READ YOUR COMMENT!
…Lose the Halls and you lose plenty of jobs in the area as well. Where do you think those people will go when they lose their jobs? Answer: The Department of Labor….Hmmmmm…..I think tax payers help support people on unemployment. Who knows….several of them might end up on welfare temporarily, or using food stamps. Perhaps they will lose their medical insurance. I wonder who’s going to pay for their medical bills if they get sick?…
John, notice he also uses the same ridiculous logic people of his ilk are famous for.
No wonder the GOP has a credibility gap. Define politician X as “conservative” then no matter how free wheeling and big spending he is on items that should be left up to the private sector, define everything politician X does as “conservative”.
I received an e-mail from Rush and Sean this morning, it stated “define everything politician X does as “conservative.”
