Pass the Resolution honoring Obama.

I read over HR673 the resolution honoring President Obama. Sure, it’s filled with flowery, exaggerated language but who the heck cares? It’s a resolution. The Legislature passes resolutions all the time honoring all sorts of people. I’m sure some of them are filled with flowery, exaggerated language that could be picked apart and many Legislators would disagree with. Why pick a fight over this and give Jane Kidd more ammunition to bash us over the head? We just walked head on into a PR buzzsaw on this one.

Amen Buzz.

Austin Scott has demonstrated he is a worthless panderer like the Ox here, and they Dems will beat us over the head with this issue should he be the nominee.

yellowhammer March 20, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Apparently, no one here realizes the back story on all this. Rep. Scott had a bill before either the Senate SLOGO or Public Safety Committee and he showed to ask them to pass it out of committee and on to the full Senate for a vote. Emanuel Jones, the author of the Senate version of the Obama resolution, was on the committee and objected to Scott’s legislation and was able to persuade a GOP Senator to side with him and Scott’s measure failed to pass out of committee. Scott looked at Jones and said that he understood what was going on and got his message and that he would be returning that message in short order, hence his move to block the Obama resolution.

Buzz,

Grow a spine. Chris, grow a spine.

wmo March 20, 2009 at 1:11 pm

Anybody got a Flash animation POV handy of someone shooting themselves in the foot?

Red Phillips March 20, 2009 at 1:31 pm

What’s that I hear … squish, squish.

LoyaltyIsMyHonor March 20, 2009 at 1:56 pm

yellowhammer, almost correct, except more than one GOP Senator voted against the bill. And Scott’s poor example of decorum po’d more than one GOP Senator on the Committee.

griftdrift March 20, 2009 at 2:13 pm

Good to know someone cares about the Republican Party not going the way of the dodo. Even if he does listen to Rush. ;)

yellowhammer March 20, 2009 at 2:21 pm

Loyalty- True… I slaughtered what I was trying to say, but I intended to say the GOP Sens voting siding against Scott made the difference in pass/fail. You’re spot on with the decorum comment as well. He certainly didn’t make many friends with that outburst, though I don’t think many folks were surprised that it happened.

Dash Riptide March 20, 2009 at 2:36 pm

Just between us non-buttkissing non-politicians, doesn’t the idea of a bunch of state politicians sucking up to the most powerful man in the world turn your stomach just a smidge? Resolutions honoring worthy constituents is fine, but strictly speaking this sort of thing is just so pointless and lame. Just pass this crap from now on so that no one, including the supposed honoree, has to waste time thinking about it.

John Konop March 20, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Great post Buzz!

Rick Day March 20, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Doug,

Why so hostile?

It’s the drugs, isn’t it?

LoyaltyIsMyHonor March 20, 2009 at 3:22 pm

He certainly didn’t make many friends with that outburst, though I don’t think many folks were surprised that it happened.

So true!

Yellowhammer: You need to fet your facts straight. Rep. Scott pulled the resolution during session that morning and then later in the afternoon appeared before the Senate committee meeting. It was there that Sen. Jones blocked Rep. Scott’s legislation (which was a good piece of legislation). It was obvious the message Sen. Jones was sending Rep. Scott, not the other way around. ANd the GOP Senator that voted against the bill in commitee had a legitimate concern for voting against the bill, not out of spite. Learn the facts before you spout off.

MaxieGrrrl March 20, 2009 at 10:48 pm

It doesn’t matter HOW this went down. What matters it that blocking the resolution does absolutely nothing to further the cause and everything to make the GOP look like the party of intolerance. I will say it again, we’ve passed resolution touting all matter of BS. This doesn’t even come close to that. Stand on ceremony if we like, but we’ll pay for it dearly.

yellowhammer March 20, 2009 at 11:06 pm

1st hand- if it helps you to believe that, then go ahead. I’m all for whatever helps you sleep better at night. That being said, I’m fairly comfortable with what I know to have transpired, so I’ll rest on that. Ok, pumpkin?

slyram March 21, 2009 at 4:56 am

Let’s see: Austin Scott is running for Governor but some Georgians consider him yellow for siding with Roy Barnes and those flag-changing Democrats. Scott gets into a brouhaha with Black members of the General Assembly regarding honoring President Obama.

This situation sounds convenient (mutual benefit) to me. Scott gets some cred in the white hood (bad choice of terms) and the Black legislators get cred for fighting the good fight.

The resolution sounds flowery to me and using “unimpeachable” and “vision” crossed the line. (Could you see the Democrat members voting for a similar resolution if McCain won.

On the Albany T.V. news last night, Scott said they are always playing the race card. “They” being the Blacks in the General Assembly is going to become “they” all Blacks globally in the media. During the interview, a framed sign from the “Boot Scott” for flag changing could be seen on his office wall. It was there like “Dewey defeats Truman.” This whole situation is a cool calculation on Scott part but I still think he would be better off taking Jim Marshall’s congressional seat.

Maurice Atkinson March 21, 2009 at 7:37 am

Yep pass the resolution. It’s not making him an honorary House member, just the caucus. Then another resolution ought to be written that congratulates him for systematically destroying the free enterprise system; for his achievements in promoting socialism; for his advocating the relationship building with terrorists and tyrants; for his role in destroying one of America’s largest financial/insurance operations. Now pass that resolution….

bluemcduff March 21, 2009 at 10:53 am

Like the Senate resolution, this is ridiculous.

The fact that the Senate vote was 70-68 against is scary–how many Republicans really agree with these resolutions let alone read it prior to voting?

Also, why did these resolutions even make the floor of the House or the Senate since no good can come of it because it won’t change how anyone feels.

Add to the fact this just invites sniping from the left because if you don’t pass it you’re perceived as racist, bigoted, unpatriotic, etc. for not supporting the president.

Never have I seen a president so intent on screwing constituencies he or his staff don’t like. Thankfully, he’s squandering what political capital he has on being vengeful instead of pursuing his goals in a more subtle and effective way.

Game Fan March 21, 2009 at 3:38 pm

IMHO why don’t they grow a pair and if they like Obama and think he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread then they should vote for the resolution. However if they think he’s an imposter and a radical left wing socialist they should vote “HELL NO” IMHO. And for the politically minded folks, the only thing that really stands the test of time rather than all the zig zagging around, is people who stay consistant. Apparently this is pretty easy for us “average Joes” and not so easy for those worried about the “political repercussions”. Heck even the liberals appreciate people who don’t turn on a dime with their supposed “views”.

Game Fan March 21, 2009 at 3:40 pm

I’d support a resolution of “dishonor” for every president since RONALD REAGAN!

boyreporter March 21, 2009 at 4:07 pm

I’m reading “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” (belatedly). Next, I’m going to read a book on cannibalism and child-abductions, all in an effort to understand better the origins of the modern Republican Party.

btpull March 21, 2009 at 6:42 pm

It seems to be fairly arrogant to pass a resolution of greatness at the start of his term. Maybe there is some concern that things won’t turn out to be so great?

1st hand March 21, 2009 at 7:55 pm

Sorry, Yellowhammer, but, again, your time line is wrong. I was there that day….on the FIRST day in this scenario, the group of privileged resolutions were read on the floor of the House by first caption only and then the Speaker asked if there were any objections and that is when Rep. Scott objected, as is his right according to House rules. The resolution was pulled from the stack and then the bundle of other resolutions were voted on. But the one about Obama was held out. It was “held” the next day and then on the day after that was when the vote was held. On the FIRST day of his initial objection, Rep. Scott later that afternoon attended the Senate Committee meeting to which you referred. It was there that Senator Jones voted, as well as others, “Do Not Pass”. Your time line is wrong. Check your facts and your timeline. I was THERE and saw it all.

JT March 21, 2009 at 7:55 pm

Thanks btpull. Finally, some good sense!

“Then another resolution ought to be written that congratulates him for systematically destroying the free enterprise system; for his achievements in promoting socialism; for his advocating the relationship building with terrorists and tyrants; for his role in destroying one of America’s largest financial/insurance operations. I’m sorry, Maurice, are you referring to Bush or Obama?

Bill Simon March 21, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Boy,

That book on the Third Reich is going to come in handy…when Obama institutes martial law.

You are clueless as to what type of mindset the Nazis were. They were not “right-wing”, but Left-wing” all the way.

Here’s a video to explain which is which:

Maurice Atkinson March 21, 2009 at 9:27 pm

In my opinion, Bush pandered to the left and played in the sandlot. Obama has jumped hook, line and sinker. 1.2 trillion within 60 days….. What will the next 3.75 years hold. My 401(k) has tanked due to fiscal mismanagement. I’m not an apologist for inept pandering politicians. Funny, your moniker is USA1, by the time this administration and congress rape the free enterprise system, you might want to change that to USA?.

Maurice Atkinson March 21, 2009 at 9:59 pm

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/22/us/politics/22regulate.html

Administration Seeks Increase in Oversight of Executive Pay ,,,,WASHINGTON — The Obama administration will call for increased oversight of executive pay at all banks, Wall Street firms and possibly other companies as part of a sweeping plan to overhaul financial regulation, government officials said.

First clue I’m right.

btpull March 22, 2009 at 8:49 am

“Administration Seeks Increase in Oversight of Executive Pay ”

Great – I can hardily wait for everyone’s salaries to level DOWN through-out the rest of the organization. This is a back handed attack on the college educated middle to upper middle class.

Bill Simon March 22, 2009 at 11:22 am

Well….sorry to tell you this, Folks…but when you ask for “bailout money”, you kinda open the door for invitation to regulation of how that money is spent.

I’ll bet you if you are operating a business, and you go to any bank right now for a loan, they are going to want to know how you are going to spend that money.

John Konop March 22, 2009 at 11:36 am

Bill is right ,”I’ll bet you if you are operating a business, and you go to any bank right now for a loan, they are going to want to know how you are going to spend that money.”

He who lends the money makes the rules.

Bull Moose March 22, 2009 at 11:17 pm

If we can pass a resolution honoring sweet tea I hope that we can pass a resolution honoring the first African American to be elected as our President of the United States. That’s what this resolution aims to do, albeit with flattery language and such which is irregardless of the greater point of the resolution.

B Balz March 23, 2009 at 8:50 am

Interesting perpspective from 1st hand , yellow, loyalty. Remarkable how ludicrous the apparent power jockeying appears out of political context. Like an executive signalling anothers demotion by taking away jet privileges.

And so goes Rome.

LoyaltyIsMyHonor March 23, 2009 at 9:44 am

Maurice said: “What will the next 3.75 years hold. My 401(k) has tanked due to fiscal mismanagement. ”

Really? That doesn’t sound very conservative/Republican of you? Are you waiting for the Governement to ressurect your obviously mismanaged 401k? I’ve forgone the 401k and invest on my own, and guess what, in the past two weeks I’ve made a killing being self-reliant and buying up under-valued stocks for my short-term portfolio. My long-term portfolio is full of under-valued recessionproof stocks as well….I’m not an idealogue, so when you guys see evil socialism, I see the potential for profit…call me spineless and unprincipled if you like ;)

boyreporter March 24, 2009 at 8:13 am

Bill: The Nazis were both rightwing a leftwing, the latter hoping to institute truly socialist policies, the rightwing — Hitler leading — using the clueless left to get into power. He then then isolated or killed them. The result was a rightwing totalitarian nation where communists and liberals had no say…except on penalty of death. It began as a “big tent” party and evolved into something quite different.

Doug Deal March 24, 2009 at 9:24 am

boy,

It is absurd to compare the labels “left” and “right” or “conservative” and “liberal” across political boundaries. They are terms that are nigh meaningless when used within our own, so their applicability to Nazi German is pretty much zero.

A better comparison is in the size and scope of government. Nationalizing corporations, directing the economy from central planning, turning people that disagree with the current leader into enemies of the state, and punishing the unpopular with acts from the national legislature, who does that sound like?

North Ga Indy March 24, 2009 at 5:39 pm

Don’t feed the troll(Boyretarted, that is).

boyreporter March 25, 2009 at 1:18 pm

Doug: Sounds like Bush/Cheney to me.

Tell North Ga Indyhick that they were President and Vice-President until recently. He probably doesn’t know.
