The State of Georgia is now Officially on Facebook (and its favorite page is the Human Rights Campaign)

by Jason Shepherd on March 1, 2009

I headed over to the Georgia Navigator page on www.Georgia.gov, the official website of the State of Georgia, to see what the weather conditions were doing to the traffic conditions when I noticed that the State’s official webpage now included links to Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr.

facebook, twitter and Flickr have been added as new ways to connect with the state.

facebook, twitter and Flickr have been added as new ways to connect with the state.

While I think it is great that the state has ventured into the world of social networking, I had to laugh a bit when I got to the  facebook page and saw the only oganization listed as a “favorite” by the official state facebook page was the Human Rights Campaign.

Georgia.gov on Facebook

For those not familiar with it, the Human Rights Campaign:

[R]epresents a grassroots force of over 750,000 members and supporters nationwide. As the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, HRC envisions an America where LGBT people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.

What’s more, the Human Rights Campaign through its Political Action Committee is involved in political races:

The Human Rights Campaign offers campaign support for targeted pro-equality candidates. Through extensive get-out-the-vote efforts, partnerships with like-minded organizations and financial contributions to candidates, HRC plays a major role in elections across the country. HRC provides assistance with message development, educational advertisements, get-out-the-vote mailings and phone calls, grassroots membership mobilization and fund raising.

Given the socially conservative bent of our state government, I found it a bit humorous that the same state with a constitutional ban on gay marriage would also list as its only favorite organziation on facebook a group that would be diametrically opposed to the ban.

Looks like we’ll just have to amend the constitutional ban. :P

I am shocked, just shocked, that their favorite site isn’t Peach Pundit.

The whole census discussion is so serious. I needed to throw something a little funny in.

I agree. Let me know when you do.

Maybe the Stonewall Republicans will be added next.

Skyler Akins March 1, 2009 at 11:50 pm

I hope they leave the Human Rights Campaign up there!

HRC……..that’s that thing ole Harry Knox does ain’t it………..

Shep March 2, 2009 at 8:42 am

It’s Stonewall Democrats, but Log Cabin Republicans.

Really, any group that advocates for the election or defeat of candidates does not belong on any official state sponsored webpage, whether it’s the HRC or GRTL. There’s also no standard disclaimer saying the State does not endorse the ideas and views of organizations that might be linked from its facebook page.

I’m pretty sure I met some Stonewall Republicans at the White Castle in Dahlonega.

Icarus March 2, 2009 at 9:48 am

Isn’t there a Stonewall Republican carved into the side of Stone Mountain?

Dash Riptide March 2, 2009 at 10:02 am

I rest my case.

Or, they only got one request for a “favorite page.”

registrar March 2, 2009 at 3:29 pm

i don’t see “favorite page” anywhere on that fb page.

Shep March 2, 2009 at 3:49 pm

Register…Behold the power of Peach Pundit!

Skyler Akins March 2, 2009 at 5:13 pm

HRC itself does not endorse candidates, only the affiliated HRC PAC does.

Is the Human Rights Campaign affiliated with the Human Fund?

rugby March 2, 2009 at 8:40 pm

I made a donation to the Human Fund in your name Buzz.

Doug Deal March 2, 2009 at 11:06 pm

Buzz, that’s the one, Art Van deLay, President.

Tinkerhell March 3, 2009 at 10:34 am

So how do I get GCO.org signed up as a “Favorite”?
:)
