From the “Atlanta Tea Party”

by Buzz Brockway on February 27, 2009

11Alive filed a report on today’s “Atlanta Tea Party.” It looks like there was a good crowd – between 250 and 300 – in spite of the rain.

One final update: The Atlanta Tax Protest blog has a report on the event.

UPDATE #2: While catching up on my blog reading tonight I stumbled across this article from the Christian Science Monitor. (hat tip: Michelle Malkin)

“The spark has been lit,” says Ben Mihalski, a “house husband” from Cobb County, Ga., one of at least 300 protesters who gathered in a hefty downpour outside the Georgia Capitol on Friday to protest what they see as profligate spending by Washington.

Protesters with sign-slogans like “Pillage and plunder: At least the Vikings did it openly” fanned out across capitols and courthouses in cities from Nashville, Tenn., to Los Angeles, objecting to bailouts and policy changes since the inauguration of President Obama.

The Tea Party USA movement also added some symbolic flourish, vowing to gather tens of thousands of tea bags to be dumped on the floor of the US Congress. In Atlanta, the brand was Luzianne.

UPDATE: Jason Pye was on Cavuto this afternoon talking about the “Tea Party” rallies.

Here are some photos sent to me from the Oxendine campaign. More photos here (hat tip: debbie0040).

They could have atleast come a little closer.

Some Other Valerie February 27, 2009 at 6:00 pm

Not making excuses for the TV crew, but it was hard to navigate the sidewalks because the capitol security guards were trying to keep walkways and entrance ways clear. You can see the crowd size pretty good. It got VERY rainy and windy about 20 minutes into the program.

Kellie February 27, 2009 at 8:11 pm

I thought there was plenty of room on the sidewalks. I got there about 11:45 and walked right up without any problem. At 12:30 I moved back down to the sidewalks, which were clear, to get away from all the umbrellas because rain was pouring off of them.
Anyhow, they could have gotten a better shot.

I’ll say it again:

There are times such as these when it SUCKS being away from Atlanta.

But then there is the remaining 99.99% of the time… :)

Kellie February 27, 2009 at 8:25 pm

DKB
How far away are you? It took me just over an hour to get there.

Dark Knight Begins February 27, 2009 at 8:33 pm

I’m in the Albany area.

This is an email going out to attendees and those that wanted to attend but could not. We could sure use volunteers for our next events…Email me at debbie0040@yahoo.com if you can help..

Thank you so much for coming out to attend the Atlanta Tea Party today in the pouring rain! We had so much rain and tea bags, that I think we actually brewed some tea before all was said and done.

Several of you asked how you could get more involved and be involved in future event. Here are several ways:

1. Friend Atlanta Tea Party Event Organizers Amy Kremer, Debbie Ellis-Dooley and me (JennyBeth Martin) on Facebook. We will group you within our own lists as people who are interested in these types of events.

2. Join Smart Girl Politics. This is a ning community. If you are not familiar with how ning works, feel free to shoot me and email and I will do my best to answer your questions.

5. Check up on current TCOT projects by going to the TCOT Report.

6. Keep up with the DontGo Movement and join the DontGo Community. Again, this is a ning community and if you have questions, let me know.

7. Check out and sign up for the email lists on Freedom Works and Americans for Prosperity.

If there is anything I can do for you or any questions you need answered, please let me know.

Have a great day!

There must be something in the air…

NATIONAL WE THE PEOPLE CONGRESS

Arrangements are now underway for a National Congress to be held in Philadelphia in February.

The purpose of the Congress is to assemble representatives of the People of every state to discuss and debate not only the litany of violations the Constitution now being endured by the People, but to develop and commit to a practicable course of action to set straight our errant public servants, restore the Rule of Law and reclaim the Blessings of Liberty once more for our Republic and our children.

Here are the highlights as we see them:

1. Three delegates from each state will assemble to discuss our constitutional problems and to agree on a course of action to cure the problem.

2. We are asking the people in each State to nominate and then choose up to three individuals to represent the People from their state at the National We The People Congress.

3. The Delegates will assemble for up to one month, or until they agree on a course of action, whichever occurs first.

4. The nominees must have a proven passion for the Constitution as authors, scholars, or activists. They should be of established respectable character if not pillars of the community.

5. The nominees must be without felony convictions and preferably be clear of problems with the IRS (we cannot afford to make it easy for people to paint the delegates with any kind of brush, such as tax-protestors).

6. The nominees should be able to cover their expenses associated with the undertaking, either on their own account or with the assistance of the people from their state.

7. Most importantly, the Delegates must understand that the Delegation’s primary objective will be settling on a course of action to cure the problems we have with our rogue Government. That course of action may well be a written demand of the Government that they respond to each of the several Petitions for Redress of violations of the Constitution, or they (the Delegates), along with hundreds of thousands if not millions of their fellow countrymen back home (who by then will have committed to stand in support of the agreed upon course of action), will withdraw their allegiance and support from the federal Government until their Grievances are Redressed.

8. We expect the Delegates will assemble in Philadelphia at the Constitution Center across from Independence Hall. See http://www.constitutioncenter.org

9. Stenographers will prepare a digital transcript of the entire event for purposes of the historic record, recording all that is said.

10. The Delegates from each state will be responsible for populating their State-level Congress web page (see e.g., the MA state page) with daily communications and updates from the National We The People Congress proceedings so the People from their State can be kept abreast as events unfold. Online discussion boards will be also available to facilitate communications for each state.

11. The entire event will be webcast live from Philadelphia.

12. Space will be provided in the meeting hall for members of the press, government and public, who will be able to observe the discussions, deliberations and debates, but not participate in or film them.

The state convention for selecting delegates will be this Sunday, March 1, 2009 from 1PM-3PM. Food and soft drink concession available. Free admission.

I was there in the mask and cape and orange fluorescent spandex tights with the “LPG” on my chest. It stands for “low profile guy”.

Game Fan February 27, 2009 at 10:28 pm

I wasn’t really there. I wussed out because of the rain. :(

Game Fan February 27, 2009 at 11:15 pm

“No thanks” to anything that resembles a Con Con. IMHO the original one works fine. If they ain’t adhering to the original one what good would a new one do? And if one were to use some common sense how could Obama use this to further dismantle the last remaining vestiges of the original document and how this pertains to some of the current trends in government?

Game Fan February 27, 2009 at 11:31 pm

Jason Pye may not remember, but I met him couple of years ago. I thought then that he was a possible media type or more specifically a great voice for radio. I think this was a good showing on his part.

Jason Pye February 27, 2009 at 11:43 pm

Thanks. I’d love to do radio one day.

IndyInjun February 28, 2009 at 12:02 am

Good work, Jason!

Bill Simon February 28, 2009 at 12:17 am

So, umm…how come this thing didn’t take place back in 2005-2006 when it was the Republicans who were spending money out the yin-yang…Hmmm…?

registrar February 28, 2009 at 12:36 am

because no one would join us in the rain back then.

hey, what happened to my earlier post in this thread? was it censored or something?

So, umm…how come this thing didn’t take place back in 2005-2006 when it was the Republicans who were spending money out the yin-yang…Hmmm…?

It did, but it was 2-300 Libertarians and unless the media think it is a GOP or the DNC event, they don’t report it.

Libertarian= consistency… less spending, limited government, more freedom.

The pendulum can keep going back and forth or it can go forward.

Jason,
Great job. Sorry we couldn’t make it. The weather sucked and John and I had to get to Charleston.

Progressive Dem February 28, 2009 at 12:09 pm

When you can draw more people than Dragon Con, you all will gain some credibility.

Kellie February 28, 2009 at 12:19 pm

Dem
The problem is we, the conservatives, work. We are the productive ones that will be penalized by the package. We are the business owners that Obama calls “rich”. We are the ones that will not benefit from any of this pork. We believe the free market works and that government can’t fix anything.
Having 300 productive people there was better than 1000 welfare recipients

Chris Huttman February 28, 2009 at 5:50 pm

There is also a 98% chance that you won’t be penalized at all.

IndyInjun February 28, 2009 at 6:22 pm

There is also a 98% chance that you won’t be penalized at all.

If one is in the middle class there is a 100% chance that they are penalized, for they will either pay for the programs via hyperinflation or taxation.

How else will the $trillions in bailouts, stimulus, and Fed interventions be repaid?

I await your response.

A good example is the new provision for paying 65% of the COBRA premiums for laid-off employees. The self employed still have to pay their premiums 100%, irrespective of the insolvency of their business, while the insurors are given federal funds to keep premiums arbitrarily high (as COBRA premiums are known to be.)

I found out about the tea party at the last minute. However, I went to it and drug three friends along. There was a small monsoon, but I was very happy to be there.

registrar March 1, 2009 at 9:18 am

mr. indyinjun,

you are 100% correct.

ADVISE NEEDED from PP:

We are going to start planning the next event close to April 15th.

Question: Would it be better to hold the event on a Saturday or after work hours during the week?

Dark Knight Begins March 1, 2009 at 12:19 pm

Debbie:

LP-Ga convention is the Saturday after, on the 18th.

The Saturday before is the day before Easter, so you’ll probably be competing with various easter egg hunts.

I’m thinking your best bet that week may very well be something after work on the 15th itself.

Kellie March 1, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Being tax day, there will be a lot of Fair Tax protest everywhere.

DeacfromGA March 2, 2009 at 10:08 am

I thought it was awesome.

Thanks Jenny Beth and everyone involved in getting it started. Made me proud to be a Georgian.

registrar March 2, 2009 at 3:27 pm

protests on the 15th work well — especially if you hold it at the main post office in atlanta. the p.o. will be staying open all the way up until midnight, so hold one from 9-12 and you’ll get hundreds of *very* angry last-minute tax filers more than willing to join in on the protesting. :-)

debbie0040 March 2, 2009 at 9:20 pm

We had also thought about Lenox Mall of the Capitol. I don’think we could get a permit to protest at the post office

debbie0040 March 2, 2009 at 9:20 pm

Lenox Mall or the Capitol

Icarus March 2, 2009 at 9:40 pm

“I don’think we could get a permit to protest at the post office”

It’s pretty easy. It’s called a concealed carry permit. Just ask any postman.

debbie0040 March 2, 2009 at 10:04 pm

Event is on for April 15th early evening. Let you know once we have a location

debbie0040 March 2, 2009 at 10:04 pm

I also think the Post Office at Cumberland Mall stay open late tax day. Not sure though

registrar March 4, 2009 at 1:33 am

no permit needed to protest at the post office. just stay on the sidewalk and don’t block traffic, and you’re within your rights. “honk if you’re paying my mortgage!”
