As Democrats begin preparing for next year’s midterm elections, a veteran political analyst is expressing worries about President Obama’s ability to provide coattails for his Democratic colleagues when he isn’t on the ballot.
Rhodes Cook, who spent almost twenty-five years writing for Congressional Quarterly before joining the nonpartisan Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, recently reviewed the results of the 2008 Georgia Senate Run-off and asked the following question:
. . .while the [Democrats] can turn out their large constituency with Barack Obama atop the ticket, can they do so when he is not on the ballot?
In Georgia, Cook replies, the answer is no.
Although the former Congressional Quarterly reporter cautions readers not to “draw global conclusions from a single state,” he points to the nearly fifty percent drop between Jim Martin’s November vote total and the Democrat’s December run-off total as evidence that “there were no Obama coattails without Obama himself.”
Martin sought to spur Democratic turnout in the runoff by tying himself closely to Obama. He argued that he would be a loyal supporter of the new president, with one flier declaring: “Jim Martin for Senate, Don’t Stop With Barack.”
Obama, for his part, cut a radio spot and recorded a robo-call for Jim Martin. In addition, the President kept most of his Georgia campaign offices open and also sent volunteers to supplement the Martin campaign operation. Still, the Georgia Democratic U.S. Senate nominee went down in a crushing 15-point defeat on December 2nd.
Cook notes red flags should be raised by Democrats across the nation looking to learn lessons from Jim Martin’s drubbing at the hands of GOP incumbent Saxby Chambliss.
Martin’s loss to Chambliss came amidst voter turnout that almost matched the number of votes cast in the state’s 2006 gubernatorial election.
While nearly 4 million Georgians cast ballots in the presidential voting, only 2,137,956 participated in the Senate runoff. That is nearly identical to the number who cast ballots in the state’s 2006 gubernatorial election (2,122,258)–a race that was won handily by Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue.
“Voter turnout in 2010 will undoubtedly be much closer to these lower numbers than the higher presidential turnout figure,” Cook says.
There’s a simple question being asked here.
Are there any coattails being provided by Barack Obama?
Without Obama appearing atop the ticket or directly involving himself in a campaign, can Democrats continue their recent string of electoral victories?
Rhodes Cook responds that the jury is still deliberating on Obama’s skill to mobilize his party’s base to “turn out for a midterm election in which he is not on the ballot.” And that, Cook says, gives Republicans hope for a quick comeback from the political wilderness.

That is why the Democrats are using Rush like the Republicans used Jessie Jackson as a broad brush to paint all the GOP candidates. It is clear he does play well with swing voters.
And the catch 22 is because of gerrymandering house members have to play the game with Rush like Dems did with Jessie Jackson. Yet it hurts the GOP in statewide races on the macro.
The irony is Rush like Jessie Jackson will never stop because that is how they make a living by saying outrageous divisive comments.
Much ado about nothing.
1. Martin was a weak candidate. Playing the ‘if’ game, Snuggles™ may have done much better because the black base was mobilized to elect any POC. Indeed, Martin’s skin color may have attributed to his defeat.
2. Flashback 5 weeks. Everything the GOP could do, they did. The national GOP office came up with EVERYTHING they could throw at Martin (including lumping in with dour looking desperados named Reid, Pellosi and *gasp* Olbermann).
The GOP used Keith Olbermann to defeat Martin! I had to flick the saliva off the mailer when it came, such an attack dog it was! Of course, the kicker was the obviously underlying message to the entire runoff campaign; “don’t give the ni**er any more help. Pelosi will develop super powers and eat your children!” (aka – Saxby can Save the White Folk™ from that Scary Negro™!)
Conclusion: Do not be reading that the Democrats are ‘weak’ because of that runoff, just as the analyst says. Even Republicans on this list have major issues with the Saxman™.
It’s going to be interesting to see some of the “conservative consolidation” against Obama. And for those of you in Rio Linda, this is gonna include a seat at the table for some Ron Paul type Republicans. A.K.A. “volunteers” and activists who don’t need a paycheck like the ACORN staff does in order to get active. The kinda conservatives who never got summoned by the White House like our illustrious talk show hosts did. And a big portion of Obama’s support came from the desire for “change”. Many of these issues haven’t even been addressed by Obama. Of course he’s still in the honeymoon period, at least with his supporters. But hey, even some Republicans and conservatives endorsed Obama, the desire for change being so strong with Bush’s popularity in the low 20′s. A lot of this stems from the desire to get rid of fraud and corruption, and incumbants, and an overall distain for everything inside the Beltway.
Georgia Dems have a really soft bench. Snuggles would have done better, but he still would have lost. You have to ask yourself who among the McCain voters whould have voted for a Democrat against Chambliss. Perhaps, Barnes could have atracted these people. I do not kow. But, there the Martin defeat shows the up hill battle the Dems will have in 2010. My money is for a landslide that includes taking all the open seats in addition to a 10 Pt victory for Gov and Lt. Gov.
But I don’t blame some of the talk show hosts for their lack of co-operation with the latest stimulus package. Because as recent history has shown with the bailouts, all the plans in the world can’t keep the crooks and liars from absconding with the loot. Where the money goes nobody knows. And dollars to doughnuts part of the “package” will be to pay for the effort to install the fairness doctrine, among a litany of other left-wing efforts. This is common sense.
But hey, y’all can keep playing THEIR game, as in “The upcoming stimulus package should include… Because I’m so smart, I shore don’t wanna loose no cred by opposing the inevitable. And last thing I wanna do is piss off the prez.” Naw. I’ll stick with the “see I told you so” crowd. Now there’s one hum dinger of a subject. And it’s interesting the latest portrayal of some of us “stick in the mud” types here. We’re just so ornery and don’t get along. WAAAAH!
Without Obama appearing atop the ticket or directly involving himself in a campaign, can Democrats continue their recent string of electoral victories?
Actually he’s got a huge following. As in a “cult of personality” type deal. But more importantly, people would have rallied behind ANY Democrat. And I think if Jeffrey Dahmer had won the primary, there would have been a significant level of support. You see, the Bushes and the Clinton’s have been passing the “simply reprehensible” baton since the late ’80s. And much of the opposition is from well informed electorate who can and will find an “alphabet soup” of reasons why these families are COMPLETE AND UTTER SCUM!! Not sure how that plugs into the latest zogby poll.
ANDRE: Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Andre, you haven’t posted anything on your own BLOG http://georgiaunfiltered.blogspot.com/ since January 8th. Wazzzup?

Admittedly, some of us ain’t got no table manners. No worries. We’ll stay out on the “back 40″ and take on Obama’s so-called “netroots”.
Oh yeah. “Hats off to the Dems. and the growing number of independents for the “internal dialog” a.k.a. wanting some real change and jettisoning Hillary during the primary. And seeing the danger in “Royal Families”. In this respect they’re one step ahead of Republicans, being we seem to be the big repository for a significant “follow the leader” mentality.
So Andre have you finally deccided that being a black GOPer is more profitable than being a Dem?
I thought it was “Rio LONDA”…
Nope. It’s Rio Linda. It’s Rush lingo. Apparently there’s a place in CALIFORN-I-A called Rio Linda, which contains some less-than-intelligent folks. Hence, the habitual intro designed for the slower individuals in case the need arises for a detailed explanation of the most recent diatribe.
