The Rev. Joseph E. Lowery of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (based in Atlanta), who gave the benediction today at the inauguration of President Obama, seems to not realize what decade it is. Indeed, after reciting the third verse of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” a hymn also known as the “black national anthem,” he said this:
“We ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white will embrace what is right.”
How petty of him. Is he not aware that over 60 million people just elected Barack H. Obama to the office of President of the United States? Does he not realize that the majority of those people were, point in fact, white? Where today are these blacks which are asked to “get back” and where are the browns which are allegedly “sent away.” And are asians getting too excited for his tastes because they aren’t “mellow” enough? Notice, of course, how in Lowery’s eyes whites still evidently don’t “embrace what is right.” Pathetic.
It is Lowery who cannot seem to move on from the past and who embraces victimhood with both arms. The SCLC has made clear that even with the election of Obama the United States is still a racist country, and it is again obvious that the true bigotry lies within Lowery’s own soul. Too bad, frankly, because the rest of the Republic long ago moved on.
[UPDATE] As Michelle Malkin notes on her post concerning this matter, “A reader points to this old civil rights chant that adds context to Lowery’s remarks — but makes the jab against whites all the more egregious.”

I’ve said my piece.
You engaged in ad hominem attack and patted yourself on the back for your efforts. That’s your choice. So be it. Enjoy your context:

“…then I have proof that Libertarians (and a number of libertarians) are paranoid whack-job idiots…”
90% of the people who voted picked McCain or Obama. If that is what it takes to be normal, then I will gladly be a paranoid whack-job idiot libertarian.
For those of you who wish to lecture uson our lack of civil rights history, the comment was made in a contemporary setting about a contemporary event and referenced a history of which primarily Southerners over about 35 years old have any knowledge.
How different would this conversation be if he had changed a few simple words to reflect the modern reality….
“We thank you for delivering us to this day when black is not asked to get back, when brown can stick around, when yellow is mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white has embraced what is right.”
DaleC,
Hate sells. Reconciliation is bad for business.
The white Obama faithful know full well that Lowery wasn’t talking about them, so in their eyes you either get it or you’re an idiot – it’s as simple as that. For them there is no room to consider the possibility that Lowery is so used to being on the outside peeing on The Man’s tent that he couldn’t stop himself from taking yet another wizz for old times’ sake while standing inside Obama’s. It’s politically correct not to see the dissonance there, I suppose.
I thought look on President Obama’s face said it all.

Wrong as usual. The uproar said it all. Umust, why must you be so…dumb? And are you sure you’re not an illegal?
“Umust, why must you be so…dumb? And are you sure you’re not an illegal?”
Goodness Kellie what did you to Magic Jeff? Other than be a woman of course.
Obama looked disappointed when Lowery said “whites will do what’s right.”
Rugby – North Ga is just a jerk. A week ago he kept commenting on how much he liked me. Of course that was before I put my picture up and when he still thought I was a gay man. Now that he knows I am a woman, he is all over me being a complete @ss.
Well I still like you.
You may even get to, “take the place” of Holly.
Who is Holly?
North GA – you’ve mention Mark Musselwhite several times lately, are you his evil alter ego?
All Ihave to say is end AFFIRMATIVE ACTION NOW….
North GA – you’ve mention Mark Musselwhite several times lately, are you his evil alter ego?
No, I mention him because I think that he should run against Lee Hawkins in 2010. I was an ardent supporter of his in 2006
If you supported Mark, you should know me. Or is that why you don’t like me.
Who did you support in that race? Hawkins?

Way back then, I was on Zinc pills.
“but makes the jab against whites all the more egregious.”
Poor, poor, poor, poor white people.
We always forget that Whites are the most persecuted people in America and the violent yoke of oppression and grave assaults against humans in this country have always gone against Caucasians. It really pulls at my heartstrings to think of all the injustice levied against White people.
And honestly, who reads Michelle Malkin and goes “yes, here is a reasonable, level-headed voice on (really any issues) this issue?”
Actually, North GA – I am one of Mark’s closest friends.
What are you chasing those pills with, MD 20/20?

Well, good for you.
What are you chasing those pills with, MD 20/20?
The only thing that I use for that purpose is Seltzer Water. On rare occasions, though, I use Mello Yello for the job.
You’re a wild man, Noogie.
Jeff.
Magic Jeff is his name.
His friends call him “Magic Jack”.
I think we should let Kellie decide.
friends?
Sure. Polly Prissypants, Clyde Frog, Peter Panda, Rumpertumskin…
You know, friends.
My friends call me Jack. When friends from opposite sides address me, they call me “Ballsack Jack”, a name I don’t appreciate at all. When they call me that, I bolt for the door because I know what they’re asking for.
You know Dash, if we could just get a videotape of those friends, we could probably win $10,000.
It’s like feeding a dog from the table – once you do it they’ll always want more.
You know Dash, if we could just get a videotape of those friends, we could probably win $10,000.
Of course, the last time I was called that was in 2000, and I’ve moved away from Morrow, GA in 2001.
LOL
I rarely comment on blogs with comments such as this but today I could not help it. I feel yes there is still racism within america, I know from first hand experience. I am was a public accountant with over 20 years of experience and could not get a staff accountant position because when I showed up for the interview the woman explained to me she had no idea I was black and did not want to hire me because I was black, this was just last year. I am the same black person that when I received a job I was called a stupid -igger and had well over a 1000.00 dollars taken out of my paycheck when I terminated my relationship with this company, I am the same black person when I called the Dept of Labor to receive my money back I was promise to have received the funds over the phone but when I went into the office I was told sorry I cant help you. I am also the same black parent, who taught her black son to love his children and their mother even if they are white and they don’t want you around because you are black. I am the same black grandmother who loves her white grandchild, and know that everyone is not racist, but that racism is something taught.
Yes, Obama is in office, he is in the same house that was builded by the hands of slaves. So if racism still is not present in this country, then what is the big deal of a black man being in office. If he was white man from Harvard that was highly educated would the same comments be spoken. I believe Lowry spoke his mind and his experience, experiences that you or I would never know that be it black or white, they are his experiences, just as I have spoken my experience. As for the comment we will always live in racism as long as we teach this to our children comment. You have to be absolutely crazy, Blacks were slaves, beaten place into bondage and treated less than people, and still and yet we prayed and continue to pray for our neighbors. Remember we did not come here on our own we were brought here, it is a part of our history, when I look at my past, there is no doubt about it I have the blood line of slaves, however, it is the bloodline of slaves that always put God first, so when we where beaten, and picking cotton and signing thoses old spritual songs we where still praising our God. We didn’t act as the animals we where treated, we did not know how. So how do you think we even know how to teach our children to be anything more than what we already are? We have children that do not even know their history, they only know the picture painted to them in society, and then we complain, you try coming from slavery and saying one day, ok you are now free, I have beaten you, I have rapped your women, I have you sleeping in the outhouse, I have you picken cotton, and if you fight back I will kill you- Go and forget that you are free now. Why not because you are equal but because I gave it to you. My question is how can you give me freedom without first taking it away from me. The wrong begins there, this is not to say blacks are victims, we are not we still have over came, we still are in the white house , we still run corporations, we still owned land, and most of us still know to worship God and put him first. To respect those who came before us (Lowry) and to accept the path God has choosen for us, through all of this I am Black and I am Proud.
You know Dash, if we could just get a videotape of those friends, we could probably win $10,000.
Yeah, but it would take more than that before I would be tempted to go wandering through Deliverance country looking for our man Ballsack.

If you do, I’m gonna hide in a Church til’ I’m 30.
Retreat to sacred ground if you must, but in the end there can be only one.
Going to call a timeout on the current discussion about Magic Jeff. There’s a comment in moderation that will pop up here in the middle of all this and bring it back on topic. Take this one over to one of the open threads.
Uh oh.
My vote is to call him Jack @ss.
“”If you do, I’m gonna hide in a Church til’ I’m 30.”"
Just stay in you rusted out trailer, no one will find you there Jack.
JEFF!
HIS NAME IS JEFF!
He like to be called Jack, so Jack @ss it is.
Will note that there is a comment from a new user that is up at 12:40 if anyone wants to continue the original discussion.
Black and Proud:
Historically, I honestly don’t believe that there is a single race, nor even a single people, that can claim it was NEVER a slave.
IOW: We were ALL once slaves. But you don’t see anyone other than black Americans b*tching about it.
Hell, the slave trade in modern times is just as prevalent as it was in the first half of the 19th century. Where is Lowery’s – or any other black ‘leader’’s – condemnation of this? Are they acting in ANY way to stop it? No? Didn’t think so.
If you honestly believe that, I’ve got some ocean front property in NEBRASKA I would LOVE to sell you. Quite simply, the human condition says that this is a bald-faced lie. Hell, you can’t even accurately claim that even among the ancient Israelites – ancestors of the modern Jew and the people that slaves supposedly saw as their own and from whom Judaism AND Christianity would one day come – every single one of them praised God in their bondage. Hell, I bet there were quite a few Jeremiah Wrights, both in American slaves and ancient Israelite ones.
Gee, I don’t know, maybe because slavery hasn’t legally existed in this country for more than 140 years??? Hell, even acounting for Jim Crow, there hasn’t been legal discrimination for more than 40 years! So how can you POSSIBLY explain 11yo black kids being raised to believe that it is perfectly ok to assault ANYONE based on the color of their skin??
Again, name a single race/people throughout HISTORY that was never a slave. Quite simply, you can’t. Every single nation and every single race has been a slave at some point or another somewhere in history. Black Americans are the only ones too stuck on themselves to get over it. (Granted, not all, but certainly the ones that keep bringing up the issue.)
If the existence of non-institutional racism were enough to justify Lowery’s choice of words, then there would be nothing to discuss.
“I am also the same black parent, who taught her black son to love his children and their mother even if they are white and they don’t want you around because you are black.”
Why don’t they want him around? She obviously had a relationship with your son, but, now it’s different? I seriously doubt it’s because he’s black. In fact, I would almost guarantee there would be other factors involved.
“As for the comment we will always live in racism as long as we teach this to our children comment.”
Uh Huh.
Funny, while we’re sitting over here wringing our hands about what Lowery really meant, tried to convey, or otherwise slip or not slip into his diatribe…………….and then even resort to jack@ss or ballsacking each other……..
…..it is nice to know that over at the BFD….here’s the link:
http://www.blogfordemocracy.org/2009/01/only_our_dr_lowery.html#comments
…..that they seem to know full well what he meant, are proud of him for saying what he meant, and don’t seem to have any pro/con quarrels about what he meant.
……so……why YA’LLl wanna be so naive……….
YA’LLl supposed to be YA’LL
can a front pager fix that for me?
gatormathis
I think you missed something. The names had nothing to do with the actual thread here. It was off topic, coming from past comments on other theads.
gator:
A lesson that has required much repitition with me:
What you meant matters little.
What you saidmatters much.

As a previous commenter brilliantly observed, “[t]he white Obama faithful know full well that Lowery wasn’t talking about them, so in their eyes you either get it or you’re an idiot.”
gator – cause we’re not a bunch of fanboys.
Dark Knight Begins said it very well.
