Total Facepalm.

“Some have laughed at Go Fish, some even in the media have laughed at this program,” said Perdue. “This is the first example of Georgia having the last laugh. Frankly, that’s because this is what we envisioned.”

Well, I guess it’s settled then…

But, for the record, Go Fish Georgia is Perdue’s single largest transportation accomplishment in his 6 years as Governor.

We can’t properly fund the crime lab and hardened criminals are getting paroled as fast as they can get processed, but we shur got us some purty boat ramps. Yep, Guv, you got the “last laugh”.

Amen Tom and Perdue cut 6% out of the GBI budget in a period of up to six armed robberies and shootings per day in middle Georgia.

I wonder when we hit diminishing returns on the go fish program. If we spend $100 million on it will it bring in $10 million?

Progressive Dem December 16, 2008 at 9:16 pm

I guess Sonny likes having a note saying, “Kick Me” on his butt.

To top off today’s bad news for Sonny Perdue….his new appointee to the State Ethics Commission, attorney Rusty Ross of Savvannah (and Jim Leintz’s close pal), has just been outed as “NOT TOO ETHICAL”. So Senator Eric Johnson’s nominee is now the UN-NOMINEE as Sonny and Lientz and Eric retreat into the bowels of the Perdue administration, which is deep underground near the Atlanta sewer system.

Vic December 17, 2008 at 12:27 am

Don’t worry, Sonny is fixing to borrow enough money on our behalf to get us out of this vast left wing media conspiracy which is trying to make his drunk on power, borrow , spend and defer taxes tenure look bad.

atlantaman December 17, 2008 at 1:20 am

In fairness to Sonny, didn’t he increase the reserve account?

This is the type of perversion of priorities from the government and Americans that put us into this economic mess. The government is merely a reflection of the American people. The bottom line you spend like a drunken sailor you can only avoid the bill so long.I hope and pray the American people wake up and realize the free lunch program is over. And the bill is coming due via jobs and the access to the credit market unless we change this irresponsible behavior.

Ramblinwreck December 17, 2008 at 9:43 am

I agree with John, the state govenment, and some counties, don’t do a very good job of prioritizing their “wants” vs their “needs.” They lose sight of the fact that you have to provide the esential functions of government and not all the extras that citizens have come to expect. That’s how you end up cutting money for forensics labs but building boat ramps. When state govenment can “hold the line on spending” but then declare that the counties have to give teachers a raise, not funded by the state, that just shifts the burden down the ladder. The same thing could be about to happen with the Public Defender funding.

If there is any bright spot to be found in the current financial mess it is that it’s forcing the state to really do some long needed prioritizing. The fact that they’re outsourcing the running of state owned golf courses (why in the world should the government own a golf course???) is a good start. I’ve also heard that there are some “extreme” cuts in all departments across the board. Of course they’re only “extreme” in a government sense and would be considered good, sound business practice in corporate America. Maybe it’s time we began running the state more like a business. Now, if we could only find a good business person to run for Governor….

The Go Fish program has a lot of value in a few isolated parts of the program. The public boat ramps will definitely pay for themselves many times over.

The pork in the majority of the $20m for that stupid fishing center in Sonny’s hometown is what makes me so angry about this entire program. The valuable parts of this program are about 1/4 of the entire plan and those are being (predictably) ridiculed because of all the lipstick, powder, and paint that Sonny added to a perfectly serviceable pig.

For what he did to this otherwise excellent economic development investment in public infrastructure, Sonny can go suck a crankbait!

Ramblinwreck December 17, 2008 at 10:32 am

Pay for themselves? What’s the break-even timeframe? Will it be during my lifetime or should I give a heads-up to my 3 year old grandson to be watching for it? Again, is building a boat ramp a legitimate function of government when it takes money away from funding the GSP or necessary infrastructure like new reservoirs (or getting our water from the Tennessee River)?

Icarus,

I would have figured that you big-government interventionalist types would applaud the government wasting money on stupid sh*t. That’s what you guys advocate anyway.

Icarus December 17, 2008 at 11:05 am

Oh come on Jace,

You know you’re the Peach Pundit contributor most likely to be using these boat ramps you’re complaining about.

Jace Walden December 17, 2008 at 11:08 am

I do like to fish. And drink beer while fishing.

Ramblinwreck December 17, 2008 at 11:25 am

“I do like to fish. And drink beer while fishing.”

Thereby doing his part to raise the level of the lakes while taking advantage of a government-provided facility. Everybody wins!

Icarus December 17, 2008 at 11:30 am

Something tells me Gwinnett Commissioners wouldn’t be that excited about this form of recycling.

Vic December 17, 2008 at 12:47 pm

If our State Government was anywhere near being run like a business, the entire Georgia Overhead Percentage and annual maintenance costs would have to be added to the Go Fish Building Program in order to determine when and if the boatramp bailout would ever be profitable.

In the meantime, we have Helicopters to buy so the Gov can fly himself to the Tournaments.
