Is he willing to stand up and say the party is going to value its principles over incumbency by those who make mockery of principles?
why only go back to the 90’s–maybe we should see if mattingly wants the gig again, i guess the state gop wants to party like it’s 1999
Another retread…..are you kidding me? We cant find one young go-getter?
I guess we need to get some leadership from the era when we were the minority party, since that’s where we seemed to be heading.
This reminds of a company with a bad product that thinks hiring a new sales manager will help. Why not focus on fixing the product first ie SOLUTIONS?
The real problem is the lack of focus on real pocket book issues! The GOP has become a party that would rather talk about bashing gay people and abortion than the looting of tax payers!
Why not focus on real issues?
Strengthen the dollar via rational fiscal policy
A healthcare solution that make manufacturing competitive and stops using the emergency room as stop gap for non insured
Promote savings to help fix the Social Security system
An immigration policy that is not a race to the bottom to find the cheapest worker (Henry Ford always wanted workers to make enough money to buy his cars)
A trade Policy that promotes real capitalism not one that allows socialist countries to steal our Intellectual Property, slave and child labor……
An energy policy that promotes getting off the need of foreign oil not lobbyist giveaways!
An education system that tracks students toward skill set not a one size fit all that drives up the drop out rate
This is just a small start, but is not what the average family cares about?
Isn’t Rusty still a Sandy Springs City Councilman? If memory serves me right, elected officials can’t serve in party leadership. Rusty would either need ti resign as city councilman or try to push through a rule change.
John, that’s the RNC’s job. State Party needs to focus on state issues…and really, my personal opinion is the candidates focus on the issues, the party’s job is to get them elected.
Do we have any good District or County chairs, with a new face, who can run?
shep1975
In all due respect this is the chicken and egg issue, unless the party has an attractive platform why join or help?
Respecfully John, the issue of this blog is Rusty vs Sue, ……or someone else, lets stay on this and steer from policy.
is that a state rule shep–i thought we have from time to time had chairs and other positions filled by elected officials-i’m pretty sure one of chatham recent county chairs was on a city council at the time-esp. muncipal officials as most of those offices are non partisan anyway??
It’s a state rule 2.13 and it affects all party positions. The rule says, “An officer who qualifies as a candidate for an elected public office for which no other Republican has also qualified shall be deemed to have resigned immediately upon being elected to that office.”
Since the rule does not say “partisan elected office” and only “elected office,” it should prevent a city councilman, mayor or other non-partisan official from holding office as well. It also says, ” for which no other Republican has also qualified.”
It does not say, “qualified as a Republican,” which would point to the office needing to be a partisan office. Then you need to go back to Rule 1.1 which defines a “Republican” for the purposes of the GRP, “All electors who are in accord with the principles of the Republican Party, believe in its declaration of policy and are in agreement with its aims and purposes may participate as members of the Georgia Republican Party (hereinafter “GRP”) in its conventions or mass meetings.”
There is a legitimate arguement that the Rule only applies to partisan offices, but some offices in some counties are partisan and some are non-partisan. Some counties do not have partisan races for school board while some do.
A copy of the rules can be viewed on the state party’s website or here: http://www.campaignsitebuilder.com/user/gagop11gmailcom/download/2007RulesWord.doc
I think Sue is really getting a bad rap here; She worked very hard for the party in the last year and should be commended for her hard work. I especially liked that she tried to bring in the younger party and not just sticking with the “old guard”
Only beef with her is still the “John McCain is like Jesus” comment at the state convention

My point is simple you can keep blaming the chairman of fix the problem. Why does anyone think a new chairman will make any difference?
yeah i looked up the rules after i posted the question shep–i am thankfully not a lawyer–but my cursory reading of the rule seems to imply election to a partisan office–which as you noted many municipal offices are not, it mentions primaries and has a clause that immediately throws you out of leadership if you qualify for office as a member of another party–and the only definitive way to do that would be running for an office that one runs for under a party affiliation…
John,
There are so many that keep saying Saxby should have had Primary opposition. Why dont you think a good fight within our party leadership is needed too? Fixing the problem begins with creating solutions. We should have three or four good candidates for State Chairman…..let them bring their solutions to the table. The incumbent of any seat shouldnt feel like they are entitled to another term, let Sue earn another term on the campaign trail where she has a chance to plead her case. She shouldnt be playing the pity card ….she should be talking about what she’ll do as Chairman if reelected. This isnt about, Pro-life, gay marriage and the economy its about a groundgame, GOTV and Grass-roots. To be honest if a male Chairman had been kept off the stage and not acknowledged most people would be saying “oh, thats just the way the big boys play….they dont like eachother anyway” and this would be a nonissue. The sweet nice lady image can get you through one cycle but Sue now needs to be tough, stop complaining about everyone else, put up her plan for 2009 and get to work.
You don’t blame Sue and Co. on the general election. The problem is much deeper than that. Saxby had the liberals against him on the left and the conservatives against him on the right. It wasn’t until you had Martin bashing Saxby on the Fairtax, that the hardcores started to come around for him.
Georgia is a red state, but in light of the Obama onslaught and an economy the doesn’t favor incumbents, I think we did pretty well not to lose a single state senator, a net loss of one house member, win an open seat for PSC, and not lose a single incumbent Federal official.
The one specific thing I can think of the state party making a mistake on is the absentee ballot request forms being quite confusing. Thousands were sent back due to lack of signatures.
I agree with joesatlanta in his last post.
Joesatlanta
I may be bias because I do respect and like Sue. And I do think relative to the situation she did a good job. I just think this is not a distraction from the real issues hurting the GOP.
In all seriousness do you not think the right issues will help with a ground game?
I am just you average parent on the weekend going to the soccer game or gymnastics meet watching my kids. And I travel all over Georgia via my kids in sports and talk to fellow parents. And what I hear from most parents is they want real solutions not more BS from either side.
Sue has personally responded to every e-mail I have sent her and returned every phone call I have made to her. That says a lot to me.
I forgot about the McCain/Jesus comment.
Everybody kind of paused when she said that.
Sorry
…think this is a distraction …
John,
I dont completely disagree with you but the Party Chairman has basic, blue-collar, grassroots responsibilities that have litte to do with policy. Organizing precinct walks, phone banks and Absentee Programs have nothing to do with policy at all. If these things arent done right we will lose….regardless of the issues of the day.
joesatlanta
Very good point!
joesatlanta is correct. We need the absolute best salesmen out there to convince people to buy the s–t sandwich that is Saxby, Johnny, and most of the “G7″.
Its going to be so much fun spending the next 2 years being Isakson’s defender. I think I’m just going to continue to let comments like the last one slide for a few more months. I don’t want to peak too early.
The PR firm for Farris 12 would like to clear up the comment by Chris. The s–t sandwich really is not what it looks like. I hope this clears up the comment.
Farris in 12 or 10 it all depends
Mayans say the world will end in 2012. Coincidentally (or not) it is the first presidential election where I’m eligible to run.
And while the s–t sandwich might not really be what it looks like, it does smell like what it is.
Icky – why don’t you run instead. They you can have the fun of tearing down Johnny rather than defending him.
What an amazing insight y’all provide on the election postmortem. In an argument between form v. substance, substance ought to win every time.
While I must agree the mechanics of running the ball downfield are critical, if the players minds ‘aren’t right’ they won’t score. As a lifelong GOP voter I have never questions my Parties values until this last election cycle.
While I respect that comments to any blog ought to be topical and relevant, Mr.Konops’ ‘policy’ words really outline a start on what any fiscally conservative, socially moderate GOP voter wants to see.
Often times the mechanics fall right in line when message is clear.
Congratulating ourselves on how little we lost in this cycle is like saying the Titanic took a lot longer to sink because it was ‘unsinkable’.
BTW, Congratulations to Andrew Hixon, Norcross City Council!
We need new blood, new ideas, and new bi-partisan cooperation, lads and laddies, or we ALL are going to pay the piper, and pay ‘em good. I for one do not wish to see breadlines in 2020.
Erick,
Your “multiple sources” are as full of sh*t as they always have been.
Ah Tea,
So you aren’t lining up behind the GOP, the party that became a Socialist outfit bent on socializing Wall Street theft?
Saxby and Johnny’s socialist schemes now are in the $8 trillion range, but GOP chieftans think they are models for reforming the party.
The GOP has no principles except opportunism.
