Lauren McDonald for PSC

by Lauren McDonald on November 29, 2008

Editor’s Note: We’re happy to put these up from any of the candidates running state wide.

Dear Peach Pundit,

I appreciate the opportunity to share my record and my accomplishments with your readers. I am running for the Public Service Commission because I have the experience, a record of lowering utility rates, and the vision for Georgia’s energy independence.

I served in the Georgia House of Representatives for 20 years, and was privileged to serve as the chairman of the Appropriations Committee for eight years. In that capacity, I managed the state’s $9 billion budget. As a successful small business owner, I know what it means to meet payroll, manage expenses, and provide excellent customer service to consumers.

I also have served on the Public Service Commission and lowered your utility bills. Georgia consumers saved more than $1.2 billion in reduced utility rates. Long-distance telephone bills were also reduced by expanding competition. These savings to Georgians were made possible by polices I supported.

My opponent likes to talk about his own experience, and a comparison shows why I am better qualified to earn your vote. My opponent served for 35 years as an executive of the US Department of Energy. Under his watch in the Department of Energy, gas prices rose to $4 a gallon. And our country failed to develop alternative sources of energy. He had 35 years to formulate an energy policy that benefited Georgians—he failed. He had 35 years to change the energy debate in Washington—he failed. Why should Georgians expect anything different if he is elected to the Public Service Commission?

One of the issues the Public Service Commission will consider is whether to approve additional nuclear power plants. I am the only candidate who has unequivocally stated my support for nuclear energy in Georgia. My opponent stated he will not make nuclear power a priority. I also support additional gas exploration, biomass energy, clean coal, and the improvement of existing infrastructure and technology.

The most important fact you should consider when casting your vote on December 2 is this one: utility rates were lower when I left the Public Service Commission than when I first arrived. A vote for Lauren McDonald is a vote for lower utility rates and energy independence.

Sincerely,

Lauren W. McDonald, Jr.
Candidate for Public Service Commission

When I was growing up, my mother had a Swear Jar. Any time we cussed, we had to put $1 in the Swear Jar. I wonder if there’s a Bubba Jar at the McDonald campaign.

Thanks for writing here at PP Lauren. I appreciate your support of nuclear power. I think it’s time to move that issue forward.

$9Billion Budget? Ah, those were the days.

Sir, why is the endorsement of the Christian Christian Alliance so important (in this campaign), you devote an entire panel to a section of non-information?

In other words, why is your position on abortion an important factor in deciding if you are qualified for the job, given you feel it is job related enough to highlight said position on a mailing?

Back in Texas, we call this “pandering”.

Be well.

I didn’t realize Bubba was also a small business owner. This makes me lean even further for him, as I’m a little suspicious of a lifetime government bureaucrat who’s bought into all these “green” energy programs and “green” taxes; having no idea what it does to the bottom line of businesses and homeowners.

I emphasize “green”, since a bunch of the programs don’t do anything for the environment but line the pockets of those participating in one of the biggest scams going – the selling of carbon credits. So hypocrites like Gore and Edwards can still in live in grotesque McMansions and fly around in private jets while chuckling, “let them eat cake” as they buy “credits” from some dude who owns a lot of trees.

er, Georgia Christian Alliance…same thing

atlantaman November 29, 2008 at 10:52 am

Where did Bubba devote and entire “panel” on his mailpiece to the Christian Alliance?

Rick Day November 29, 2008 at 11:18 am

oops my bad.

Wrong white male over 50 christian panderer. (whispers) They all look alike, ya know.

boy am I the dumb. I was blinded by all the diversity this party has!

Rick, I think Jim Beck who heads the Christian Coalition in Georgia would think they are different organizations.

Sadie Fields left the Christian Coalition and formed the Georgia Christian Alliance. After about a year of no leadership, the Christian Coalition’s national organization asked Beck to try to rebuild the organization in GA. The biggestest difficulty rests in the fact most people can’t separate Fields from the GACC.

I do wonder what is the definition of a “Christian” energy policy, but I would list out every endorsement I had too, especially if it would give me a few more votes in a runoff from voters who may end up looking at personalities.

I WAS right!

OK I knew, subconsciously this was based on some christian group, as evidenced by the tiny url in the lower right corner. If it smells like a duck..

Shep, your point is well taken, but it begs the broader question of why politicians are focused on pandering to their base, instead of trying to act bold and reach out to undecideds? Opponent figures the Christian groups have no dog in the hunt of this office, so he ignored their ‘gotcha’ position poll.

And this candidate features an entire panel of ’selected answers’. Blatant attempts at manipulation of The Simple Folk™ , as I gently refer them, is a key I look for in determining the integrity of a candidate.

I’ll stop here.

When I read on a political mailer anything that has to do with intimating that ‘Christians Support Me, therefore I am Godlike’ it is an automatic DQ. They retain 0% credibility, as long as they attempt to tie those two powerful forces together (religion and government).

This candidate gets no vote from me. He panders to the simplest of folk for the wrong reasons. He, and his, are part of the problem.

I do not know nor really support the opponent, but the more we all type, the more it helps me decided my vote.

What does God have to do with our electric and gas rates? Got an answer for that Bubba?

Howard Roark November 29, 2008 at 1:40 pm

A runoff is all about turnout. Look at voting demographic groups paired with who will turnout in the Senate race and you should be able to understand why the mailers went out. Like them or not they will turn out voters for “Bubba”.

It’s politics.

The above lies “signed” by Bubba were paid for by Georgia Power’s hope we can get this buffoon elected so we can raise utility rates Pac.

chrisishardcore November 29, 2008 at 11:03 pm

Bubba, do you measure gas in 2.5 gallon increments? I filled up on the way home from the Georgia game today for $1.52 per gallon. Or was this post written back in August?

atlantaman November 29, 2008 at 11:32 pm

Well now that Powell has retired from the DOE, the price of gas has dropped.
