As Erick posted yesterday, Newt Gingrich’s name has been floated out as a possible Chair of the Republican National Committee. Other names have been floated as well and it seems that Newt and former Maryland Lt. Governor Michael Steele are the two left standing.
Late word today suggests Newt may not be running after all, but since he never said he was, who really knows? In order to save Jason Shepherd from a broken heart we must keep hope alive.
Here’s a poll to gauge opinion of a possible Gingrich run among PP readers:

Ron Paul, of course.
Unfortunately, most of you will reject that as vehemently as Americans rejected your status quo last week.
The 2008 election cycle should be a lesson for Republicans. At the grassroots levels understand what we believe and how to win. Unfortunately, national leadership doesn’t remember the principles that the rest of us have embraced.
While Newt is respected, he is the last person we need as Chair of the RNC. We need someone with his abilities to produce ideas and conservative principles, but not Newt. We can continue on a path with retread politicians by settling for someone like Newt, or we can embrace the future and create the 2nd Republican Revolution in 2010 once the people realize what Obama and the Democratic Congress can’t possibly do what they promised in 2008.
I say Newt. He actually got things done as speaker. He is the smartest person in the party. Steele would also be a good choice.
W will have nothing to do. Do y’all think he would consider becoming the chairman?
What did Newt get done? Get rid of the Department of Education? Institute Term Limits? Defund the NEA? Balance the Budget?
Newt got into power then decided reform wasn’t necessary because the GOP was in power. He is the last thing we need.
My vote is for Pat Toomey
I can tell you he did a hell of a lot more than the clowns from 1998-2006.
Sowega. 0 times 2 is still 0.
I caught Hannity on the way to a meeting tonight and Newt was on he specifically stated that he would not serve if asked by the RNC. He did say that he would consider the Presidency in 12, but the big news is that he said he was not running for RNC Chair.
I see we take Newt at his word-we need a fresh face for our party. We can have the same principles that all of us believe, but have a fresh face that doesn’t automatically alienate half the voters.
What about Pat Buchannan?
I’m not heartbroken. I’m about to tell my Newt people to join the “Michael Steele for RNC Chairman” group on facebook.
I still have the issues with Steele versus Newt in terms of proven strategy planning, but at least I have no issues with Steele on political philosophy. Sans Newt, I would take Steele over all of the other names mentioned so far.
Chip Saltsman imo.
