Saxby Scared of Debates

It seems that Senator Saxby Chambliss is scared of debating Jim Martin and Allen Buckley.

You’ll recall that, on Aug. 5, the day of the Democratic run-off vote, Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss invited Buckley and that Tuesday’s victor to a series of debates.

The three camps met late last night, to discuss a schedule. A representative for Democrat Jim Martin suggested weekly debates, either here or in Washington — the latter location to fit Chambliss’ schedule.

Eight to 10 meetings, in other words.

Buckley said there was an agreement. But it looks like Chambliss has put the cap at five debates.

Ah, the Debate Chicken. . . We tried to get Jim to agree to dress a staffer up as the chicken and then tackle him. No go. But it would’ve been really funny. 😉

  2. odinseye2k says:

I’m not one to call Chambliss anything but a chicken, but 8-10 debates does seem a *tad* much.

I’ll take 3 or 4 as a good number (maybe tack one on in DC if Martin has to take a flight up there).

The number five sounds good too.

  3. odinseye2k says:

Three debates plus one VP debate has been the standard for multiple cycles. Personally, I’d rather the League of Women Voters retake control of the debate process from the pseudo-independent Commission on Presidential Debates, but meh.

The CPD format and mainstream interviewers makes it hard to get the debate to be more than a talking point dumping ground.

  4. JamesStratfield says:

Yeah Trevor so Obama is definitely a coward by your standard for first claiming he would debate McCain “anytime, anywhere” and then backing off that statement.

And for a Senate race? Seriously? Why do we need more than 3 debates even? 5 is over the top let alone 10!

  5. drjay says:

why does buckley get to be in the debates? i’d say or or 4 is all you need–this is’t 1858 they don’t need to go from town to town debating on the back of wagons for everyone to get a chance to hear them–even out in the sticks they have internets these days…

  6. Chris says:

Actually, Buckley was invited to the debates. Now, he probably hasn’t raised enough money to fly to DC 10 times, but he has been invited.

  7. kcordell says:

More than one debate would be a waste of time. No one can say for sure what Mr. Buckley would do should he get elected. On the other hand… we do know what Saxby has done. Let’s give Mr. Buckley a chance. If he doesn’t work out we’ll find someone else.

  8. Icarus says:

Buckley, as a libertarian, is invited to appear in 5, five, FIVE?, debates, and he’s bitching because there aren’t enough?

Ask Bob Barr how many debates he’s been invited to. I think it’s about five less than five.

Nothing to see here. Just a libertarian trying to get into the press. Move along.

And Chris, I think Donna was just the press secretary that ordered an intern to wear the chicken suit.
