Consider this a run-off results open thread.

UPDATE by Erick: Can we congratulate Jim Martin yet? Sadly, the days of Snuggles Jones may be at a political end.

Looks like Bannister has defeated Green in Gwinnett, 52-48

Looks like Butterworth is stacking up a lead against Schaefer. Counties she will do well in have yet to break, but they are small.

As I have said before, Snuggles “Mattress King” Jones will lose tonight. Wont even be close

Victory party tonight at Madame Tussaud’s! Everyone’s invited.

VJ is losing Fulton Co. 75-25

While they have traded barbs over who voted for W, who falsified endorsements, under who’s watch children died, who got crushed in 2006 in an open race, who was a Convenientcrat, who was a closet Republican, who was a true supporter of the gay agenda, who didn’t vote for Obama, who…didn’t suck as bad as the other guy…

Looks like the man’s been busy.

It appears the Scott family is gone from Clayton County. Myron Freeman is gone in Fulton. Vernon is done. Ditto for Stan Watson. Crazy Nancy wont be returning to the State Senate.

Great day for the Children

Looks like Vern is going down! Good riddance to him and his Bush-Voting shady self.

I always thought he was bought & paid for by Saxby, anyway.

Icarus 08.05.08 at 8:18 pm

Victor Hill is currently leading in Clayton, so The Children aren’t safe yet.

And what’s going on in Gwinnett? Are there real problems, or is Green just playing the sore loser card?

Decaturguy 08.05.08 at 8:19 pm

With 84% of the precincts in, Jim Martin has 62% in Dekalb County!!!

GOPeach 08.05.08 at 8:20 pm

It will be hard to beat Martin folks. I am scared. We needed Vernon Jones to win.

Icarus 08.05.08 at 8:24 pm

Made the above Green comment after scanning the AJC front page of headlines. After reading the story, it appears that there are problems with their vote totals (seemed odd that they were done counting at 8:05), and that we won’t know the outcome of that race for an hour or so. My apologies to Ms. Green.

candlerpark 08.05.08 at 8:24 pm

I agree with you, Peach . . . . Vern was the easier opponent for Saxby by far.

But this still is GA

Icarus 08.05.08 at 8:26 pm

“We needed Vernon Jones to win.”

Only for the sheer entertainment value of watching $5 Million of negative, though very true, ads.

I find it hard to believe that Martin will pull large numbers of votes from outside the Atlanta area, and in Middle and South GA in particular. I think those voters are crucial for any Democrat comeback in this state.

“Sadly, the days of Snuggles Jones may be at a political end.”

We’ll always have him in our hearts, and our court documents…

Green has asked the Gwinnett Solicitor to look into voting irregularities, but she asked that the Solicitor first complete her investigation into Bannister’s improper use of the state seal.

Brian from Ellijay 08.05.08 at 8:31 pm

Look at turnout in Dekalb, 54,000. 30,000 against Vernon

Next closest county is 9,000

Brian from Ellijay 08.05.08 at 8:35 pm

Wait, I didn’t see Clayton, at 18,000. Dekalb just jumped to 63,000 though.

Fulton will probably catch up, only being 30% in.

I Am Jacks Post 08.05.08 at 8:53 pm

Butterworth rolls . . .

shep1975 08.05.08 at 8:57 pm

If we had someone from Cobb with front page posting, you’d already know that former Republican County Commissioner (turned Democrat) Woody Thompson has beat Annette “I don’t like to pay my taxes” Kestling 68 - 32% in the Democrat leaning 4th District. Woody’s brother is Cobb Democrat Senator Steve Thompson. Woody had served as a Republican on the Cobb County Commission before being beaten by Kestling 4 years ago.

GFYRC Top Gun Training graduate David banks won his run-off for Cobb school board 62-38. I don’t think there is a Dem in that race. Thanks again to Eric for being one of the instructors!

Now , in Savannah, we can turn our attention to the race for the U. S. Senate between Jim Martin, a liberal Democrat from Atlanta, and Saxby “Big Sugar” Chambliss, our incumbent GOP Senator. Around coastal Georgia Saxby has always enjoyed a lowkey positive presence, but with his recent screwup of defending Imperial Sugar in the aftermath of the the sugar refinery explosion and subsequent 13 deaths, please believe me that he has suddenly found himself in a struggle in these parts. You have to be here to feel the resentment from the usual Saxby-friendly folks. The Savannah News-Press has been roundly disrespecting Saxby on this issue, and it has hurt him a lot. But I’m certainly not counting Saxby out in November. He has time to recover and he has Lord Vader (Tom Perdue) running his campaign.

Buzz Brockway 08.05.08 at 9:02 pm

It appears Bannister will win in Gwinnett. It’s tough to tell how many votes are left to count because of this problem but Bannister has been holding a steady lead of 51.5 - 48.5 for most of the night.

I Am Jacks Post 08.05.08 at 9:43 pm

Boy, you have to think Green could have made up some ground had her absentee ballot request mailer not listed the incorrect address. Whoops.

Progressive Dem 08.05.08 at 10:16 pm

This is a good night. Burrell Ellis can bring DeKalb back from the brink. Jim Martin will ve a viable candidate against Sen. Foghorn Leghorn.
And the Fulton sherriff is gone.

The only disappointment is Walking Small being re-elected, but that is tempered by Vernon losing his home county to Jim Martin.

Hopefully the days of playing the race card by people like Vernon and Cynthia McKinney are over. Hope springs eternal.
